The ballet, suggested by Canto III and Canto XII of Tasso's poem, "Jerusalem Delivered" takes place in the days of the Crusades. The opening scene tells of the lirst encounter of Clorinda, the pagan girl , and Tancred, the Christian warrior. A stage blackout indicates a lapse of time, and the following scene shows their linal meeting-a mortal combat. Only after he has wounded her fatally does Tancred discover that his masked assailant is the girl he loves.

The Moon Reindeer, called Manrenen in Swedish, is based on a Lapp folk-tale concerning a young woman, Aili, who, when lovesick and deserted, comes under the power of the magician Naaiden. He gives her the power to attract the one she loves, the young Lapp Nilas, but in return she has to deliver human sacrifices to the evil spirits.
Every moonlit night Aili turns into a white reindeer and lures young men over an abyss to their death. The Lapps suspect that Aili is the Moon Reindeer and threaten to throw her over the abyss, but Nilas defends her. He trusts her right up to the time he is about to become the Moon Reindeer's next victim. In the struggle between the Moon Reindeer and Nilas, the Moon Reindeer is killed, and in its dying moments reverts to human form.
