We wish to express to all those in participating Chapters of the AFS for their untiring efforts in help-ing to make our East Coast Regional Conference at Tamirrient, Pa. such a tremendous success. Attendance and interest was at an all time high and we are deeply grateful to all concerned.

Mr. Jay Hitchings was good enough to call and tell us that they had some lab equipment that they would like to give to some educational agency that could make good use of it. Dr. Diran Apelian of Drexel Univer -sity was advised as to its avail-ability and made arrangements to pick up the equipment. The entire industry is grateful to Foote Mineral Company for their interest and help. -

Robert "Bob" Moseman, former chair-man of the Philadelphia Chapter, and formerly with Rockwell, Inter-national, is now associated with the Singer Company, Elizabethport, N. J. in a managerial capacity in their Metal Casting Division.

Roy Secoda, is now treasurer of Dodge Foundry & Machine Company, Philadelphia.

Diran Apelian, Assistant Professor, Materials Engineering at Drexel University proudly announces the birth of a daughter on November 10 Congratulations from the Chapter.

He further announces that the Univ -ersity recently purchased a 400# Al furnace to carry out research on filtration of Al Alloys, and also a 50 Kw induction unit to carry out the other solidification research going on at Drexel.

Excerpt from the Philadelphia Inquirer: When the city of Scranton recently installed a new street lighting system, a problem developed when the underground cables became corroded. City officials debated suing the contractor for faulty work. The contractor, however, wa spared litigation when an unheral-ded state-related agency deter -mined that the corrosion had been caused by coal-mine fill, which contained acid that had reacted with the cables. The same agency helped the Hunt-ingdon (Pa.) School district save $50,000 in fuel costs last winter. In another instance, the agency saved a foundry in ConnellsvIlle, Pa. $44,000 by suggesting that an additive be used in sand for making castings. A large Percent

age of the castings had been rejected because the hot metal was washing away the sand in the wooden molds. The problem solving agency is the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PENNTAP) a cooperative venture of the State Commerce Depart- ment and Pennsylvania State University. The agency has access to billions of dollars worth of technical and scien-tific information, all of it free for the asking to private businesses, government agencies and municipalities. Last year, PENNTAP received 1,948 inquiries and helped save its clients more than 1.9 million dollars worth of free information.

The 46th Annual Southeastern Regional Conference, AFS will be held February 2, 3 5 1978 at the Hotel Roanoke, Roanoke, Va. sponsored by the Birm-ingham District Chapter, Tennessee Chapter and the Piedmont Chapter. Please remember and promote, the Metal Casting film "Cast A Giant Shadow", it is available for showing to schools and other groups, through Bob Schmidt, who, along with his committee has been doing a fine job in seeing to it that this film is presented often to as many groups as poss-ible. If you know of any group who can you this film to advant-age, please let Bob or the Secret-ary"s office know.

"In Philadelphia the Urban Coal-ition is providing the ex-offender who is sincerely interested in learn ing job skills, an avenue which will enable him or her to land a good job in his/her field of interest. The Urban Coalition, in addition to training students and helping them look for part time work has a job referral service which keeps in contact with employers in the city and surrounding areas. There are 125 ex-offenders presently enrolled in the program all sharing a label. Not only are they ex-offenders, but they are ex-offenders with a future. The Foundry at the Urban Coalition Institute is the most popular dep-artment and also enjoys the best rate of students finding jobs upon completion of training. The Institute, headquartered at Dobbins Vocational School, and offers courses in auto mechanics, welding, foundry practice, rest-aurant operations, auto body repair and office skills." Jerry Smith, Foundry Instructor at Dobbins placed 13 students with Philadelphia foundries and 7 with one company that is closely assoc-iated with our industry. Jerry Smith and his associates are to be thanked and congratulated for a fine job.

The April meeting of the Philadel= phia Chapter will also be held at the Holiday Inn, Lionville, Pa. and will feature a two-day Sand Seminar. A separate flyer and registration form will be provided you within the next couple of weeks. Plan now to attend this informative session.

Jerry Smith, Foundry Instructor at Dobbins Vocational School and students Eric Bigelcw and Anthony Mizzel attended the sand seminar last month as guests of the Phila-delphia Chapter.

H. G. Enderlein Company of Phila-delphia, and the Foote Mineral Company of Exton, Pa. are going to donate foundry equipment and metal testing apparatus to the Dobbins School toward furtherance of their foundry educational cours our congratulations and thanks are e xtended to both companies.

Here is an opportunity for foundry men with an interest in conserving energy in their operation to ob-tain pertinent information geared specifically for the foundry in-dustry. The AFS Energy Management Division has gone to great lengths to arrange this Energy Management Conference to be held, Sept. 20-21 1978 at the Sheraton O'Hare, Rosemont, Ill. There will be speakers from industry to present information on solutions they have achieved, consultants who make it their business to know methods for; conserving energy in the foundry industry and government personnel who are intimately aware of the polocies that could have an impacti on foundry operations. For further information and applicat-ion address AFS-CMI, Energy Mana-gement Conference, American Found-i rymenTs Society, Golf and Wolf Roads, Des Plaines, Ill. 60016

The Philadelphia Chapter has don-ated $1000 to the AFS Environ-mental Laboratory Program for Service and Research. Acknowledge-ment card and letter of thanks have been received from Ash Sinnett, Executive Vice President.
