PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER A. F. S.
CAPANY OF THE MONTH AWARD: MANGANESE STEEL FORGE COMPANY, Philadelphia, Pa.
will be presented with a Certificate of Appreciation at our October meeting for their many years of cooperation with the American Foundrymen's Society and the foundry industry. Our honored guest will be L. E. TITLOW, Sales Manager, who will accept our award.
Manganese Steel Forge Company has been working with manga-nese steel for close to fifty years. Most of these years were spent as the sole supplier of plain plate and bar and fabrications of these mate-rials. Throughout this time MSFCo. was growing in personnel and knowledge of the industry. As applications came along, we pioneered in the use of manganese steel to solve many of the industry's wear problems. Thus our slogan, "The Harder It Works . . . The harder It Gets," became popular in referring to our product.
In 1935 MSFCo. completed negotiations for the purchase of Audubon Wire Cloth Company. This division is now known as Audu-bon Metaiwove Division. In 1968, with much enthusiasm and pride MSFCo. and its divisions became part of Harsco Corporation of Har-risburg, Pa. Today, we operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Harsco and its eleven divisions of widely diversified manufacturers of metal and industrial products. Harsco is a nationally-known company with operations in thirty-five states and eight foreign countries; and their stock is highly regarded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Hadfield type manganese steel, which we market under the trade name ROL-MAN, is a heavy duty wear resistant alloy and is presently our sole product. While we manufacture some parts in gauges as light as 1/si', for the most part, our work is confined to much heavier items ranging in thicknesses up to 2". ROL-MAN does so much to alleviate wear problems in shot blast equipment because of its un-equalled strength, ductility and resistance to wear. This means less breakage than with conventional cast parts, less down time for replace-ments, lower maintenance costs and greater equipment operating efficiencies.
The officers of MSFCo. are James C. McGinnis, President and General Manager and B. A. Fremstad, Vice President and Treasurer. M'-'anese Steel Forge Company conducts its entire operation at R ond Street and Castor Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa.
NOW more than ever we need the active and financial support of all foundries and suppliers. AFS is continuing with the most complete research effort of any trade society anywhere. AFS Environmental Sciences now have three full-time experts, and we have just embarked on a three pronged Public Relations Program: (1) management news-letters, (2) film, literature, etc. to improve the foundry image, and (3) a listening post (by-laws prohibit lobbying) in Washington, D.C. to report on impending legislation in environmental regulations and all hearings, etc. of any nature that is of interest to our industry.
The federal government has been very much impressed and sur-prised when informed of our industry, and its vast economic impact. Much has been done and much more will be done to further our interests, so NOW more than ever before, every foundryman and supplier must contribute his share. We all need the strong organized effort of our society, and AFS needs us. Some members may suc-cumb to the weakness of allowing membership to lapse, considering the economy and costs, but why give up the greatest value? Now is the time to increase our support, for our interest and for the interest of our industry.
The Philadelphia Chapter- AFS is pleased to announce the follow-ing new company and personal memberships:

March 18, 1972 — FIRST ANNUAL LADIES NIGHT (Combined Philadelphia and Metropolitan Chapters) Holiday Inn, U.S. Route 1, South Brunswick, N.J.
The art of molding has been very capably demonstrated by LOREN HANCOCK, Wilton Brass Co., Columbia, Pa. at various af-fairs recently. He showed his skills at the U.S. pavilion of "Man and His World" in Montreal, Canada by producing replicas of silver dollars for interested visitors. President R. P. Wilton advises that Mr. Hancock has appeared at the Smithsonian Institute, and at Hershey's Pennsylvania Dutch Days during this past summer.
A group of Malleable Founders' Society members will leave on October 2 for Tokyo, Japan, for a two week tour of nine foundries. MFS President THOMAS BLANK, President, Pennsylvania Malleable Iron Division of Gulf & Western Industrial Products, Lancaster, Pa. will lead the contingent.
Birdsboro Corporation, Birdsboro, Pa. has recently appointed SYLVESTER E. MUELLER, Vice-President/Foundry Division and RICHARD BEAHM, Superintendent/Cleaning and Finishing Oper-ations.
mm LEONARD E. BILGER, President, Prizer-Painter Stove
Works, Reading, Pa. died on August 6, 1971 at the age of 66. Mr. Bilger devoted more than 40 years of his life to the metal casting industry.
RONALD N. SHEAFFER, Cleaning Room Superintendent, Fuller Co., Manheim, Pa. passed away on July 19, 1971 at the age of 38. Mr. Sheaffer was a prominent football athlete and was presented with the Lancaster County Outstanding Athlete Of The Year Award in 1950.
EDWARD ROBERTS, former Metallurgist with Dodge Steel Co., Philadelphia, Pa. died while associated with a foundry in South America.
EDWARD J. DEAN, President, American Coke & Coal Chemical Institute, predicts the coke supply picture to improve with new coke facilities, including a new development by Semet-Solvay, COLTEK Process, involving coal preheating and pipeline charging. It will enable an existing coke plant to increase capacity up to 50%, and at the same time eliminate air pollution during charging operations.
PALMYRA FOUNDRY CO., Palmyra, N.J. plans to enter the steel casting field, although they have been producing gray iron, alloyed gray iron, Meehanite and Ductile iron castings for years.
New York Governor Rockefeller recently wrote a letter to Foundry Magazine stating that he recognized the problems of our industry, and has enacted on a special rule for smaller foundries. The previous regulation would have required most of New York's smaller foundries to close.
A recent gray iron pollution control survey in New Jersey showed that a model foundry with a cupola melting six tons per hour would be allowed to emit 18.7 pounds per hour of particulate matter in New York, 13.6 pounds per hour in the Bay area, 11.3 pounds per hour in Los Angeles, and ONLY 1.5 pounds per hour in New Jersey. At present, New Jersey gray iron foundries contribute .50% of the total emission in the atmosphere, but under the proposed code they would be limited to less than .006% of the desired air quality level. The in-dustry's proposed alternative code would limit emissions to a level of approximately 95% removal, or .33%% of the desired air quality. This is a definite display of organized effort.

JOHN WARREN, TMW Div., North American Rockwell, Reading, Pa. attended the National Industrial Pollution Control Council, U. S. Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. on October 4, 1971, and he is pleased to state as follows:
"We met to help establish the parameters for a study to be con-ducted to determine the economic impact of Air and Water Pollution on the gray, malleable and ductile foundries in the United States. We helped establish reasonableness in the assumptions to be used for the study."
"We realized the meeting was not intended to develop changes in the E.P.A. standards, but tried to point out the terrific impact the proposed regulations will have on small foundries. Seventy-five per-cent of the foundries in this country employ less than 100 people. I feel the most important economic assistance that could be afforded these plants would be the inclusion of the time weighted factor pro-posed by the foundry industry. This time factor would have an in-finitesimal effect on emissions and would be very helpful to this group of plants. We feel the small foundries are a very important part of our economy, and relief is needed to keep them in business."
At the meeting, Mr. Jackson of the N.I.P.C.C. requested John to submit the following data on foundries on the East Coast that have closed within the last year:
Names of foundries and locations Approximate tons poured Number of people employed Approximate tons shipped WE NEED YOUR HELP - Please write the Secretary's office and
give us the names of foundries that have gone out of business along with any other available information. The Chapter has a means of securing the particular data relative to the tonnages and number of employees so that it is not compulsory that this information be fur-nished, although it would be helpful.
John Warren goes on to state that, "since the door is open, and they seem anxious to obtain this data for support, it behooves us to get some to the Department of Commerce."
KINDLY HELP YOURSELF AND OUR INDUSTRY BY MAIL-ING WHATEVER INFORMATION YOU HAVE TODAY.
Reading Gray Iron Castings, Inc., Reading, Pa. has become a di-vision of Peerless Industries, Inc. The company will continue to operate as a jobbing foundry under its present management.
Arrangements have been completed for Foundry Educational Foun-dation expansion into Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa. during the present 1971-72 school year. The program will be under the capable leadership of Professor GEORGE A. SMIERNOW.
New Chapter Director WILLIAM WILKINS, Ross.Tacony Crucible Co., Philadelphia, Pa. is recuperating at home following successful back surgery.
WILLIAM F. MILAM has been appointed General Manager of the Brimfield Co, Hammonton, N.J., a division of Jesse S. Morie & Son, Inc., Mauricetown, N.J.
WILLIAM E. BRUGGER, President and Treasurer, Ephrata Manufacturing Co., Ephrata, Pa. passed away on October 21, 1971 at the age of 74. Mr. Brugger started with the company in 1922 as Office Manager and in 1954 he purchased controlling interest in the firm and became its President and Treasurer.
CHARLES D. HAMBURG, President, Bonair Foundry Co., Philadelphia, Pa. died on October 23, 1971 at the age of 80. Mr. Hamburg devoted more than 60 years of his life to the foundry industry.

Speaker:
GERALD A. CONGER Vice President, Industrial Division Royer Foundry & Machine Co. Kingston, Pa.
Mr. Conger was Assistant Professor of Metallurgy and Metal Process-ing at the University of Michigan from 1946 to 1952. In 1952, he became owner of C&S Products Co., Inc., manufacturers of shell molds and related shell equipment where he also developed hot coating of shell sand. C&S Products was sold to Barber-Greene of Aurora, Illinois in 1961 and he remained as Manager of the Foundry Division for two years.
From 1963 to 1966 he was Chief Metallurgist for Wells Manufacturing Co., Skokie, Illinois and finally joined Royer Foundry & Machine Co., Kingston, Pa. and is currently Vice-President in charge of sales, adver-tising promotion and general operations of the Industrial Division.
With photos Mr. Conger will show how a floor foundry can modernize their operation over a period of time. This will involve the principle of getting the sand and molds off the floor and minimizing manpower re-quirements.

4 PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER A. F. S. MARCH, 197
HAVE YOU NOTIFIED YOUR WIFE about the Dinner. Dance, March 25, 1972 at the Holiday Inn, New Brunswick, N. J. in conjunction with the Metropolitan Chapter? Since the women now know each other following their meeting at the Penn State and Atlantic City conferences, they are looking forward to getting together again. Here's an excel-lent opportunity—everyone is welcome for a gala evening.
Chapter Chairman, RAYMOND DECECCO, George F. Pettinos, Inc., Bala Cynwyd, Pa. has announced the selec-tion of the following Nominating Committee:
G. WESLEY WILLIAMS, (Chairman) Janney Cylinder Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
JOHN SCHRAEDER, FMC Corp./Link-Belt Enclosed Drive Div., Philadelphia, Pa.
WILLIAM MORLEY, H. G. Enderlein Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
PHILIP KEELEY, Northern Bronze Corp., Philadelphia, Pa.
EDWIN ZEEB, Pennsylvania Steel Foundry & Machine Co., Hamburg, Pa.
ROBERT SCHMIDT, Ajax Metals/H. Kramer & Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
EDWARD KLANK, Jesse S. Morie & Son, Mauricetown, N. J.
The Philadelphia Chapter Board of Directors has elected CHARLES J. HAMBURG, Bonair Foundry Co., Philadel-phia, Pa. to be a Director for the balance of 1972. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Charles Menzer.
Gray Iron Founders Society Treasurer, PAUL HARNER, Unicast Division/Berkrnont Industries, Boyertown, Pa. an-nounces that their annual meeting will be held on Septem-ber 25-26, 1972 in Toronto, Canada.
Foundryrnen are amazing people! !! While over 90 men listened to "Cy" Donner, Holly City Corporation, Hammon-ton, N. J. discuss resin coated sand at the Reading Foundry-men's Association meeting held on February 8, 1972, a fire broke out and smoke filled the room. At first ignoring pleas to leave, the group gradually, and very orderly picked up their coats and moved out as four fire trucks arrived with firemen carrying axes and lugging hoses streaming water. Although patiently waiting to continue the meeting, Chair-man JAMES YOUNG finally had to adjourn the evenings festivities since the smoke in the room was so thick lie could not see his hand in front of him. Smoke and fire are so common to the foundryman.
THOMAS E. LINDSEY, JR., Plant Engineer (Re-tired) Dodge Steel Company, Philadelphia, Pa. passed away on January 24, 1972 at the age of 87. Mr. Lind-sey had worked for Dodge for 30 years and was re-sponsible for the plant's maintenance.

PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER A. F. S.
Please mark your calendar with the dates Sept. 25-26, 1972, denoting the 9th A.F.S. Pennsylvania Foundry Con-ference at Penn State University, University Park, Pa. The conference opens with a pre-conference golf tournament Sunday, Sept. 24, and then on Monday and Tuesday, the best educational sessions the industry has to offer.
The annual softball classic between the undefeated divi-sion league leaders, the Foundryinen and Suppliers will start at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Warrington Country Club on June 16th. All bats and balls will be chanced off to the foundrymen participants immediately following the game of the year. It's just too bad the loser of the big game will conclude the grueling season with only one loss on its record.
The tremendous success of the recent AFS Castings Con-gress and expo at the Philadelphia Civic Center was largely due to the efforts of General Chairman JOHN WARREN, TMW Division, North American Rockwell Corporation, Reading, Pa. and the various men and women who served on our committees. The Philadelphia Chapter has every reason to be proud of its efforts.
Students from Drexel University and students and in-structors from the Bucks County Industrial Arts Association were guests at the exhibits and technical sessions.

The Reading Foundrymen's Association annual outing will be held Friday, September 8, 1972 at the beautiful Heidelberg Country Club, Bernville, Pa.
Holly City Corporation, Hammonton, N. J., producers of coated foundry sands has recently become a part of Jesse S. Morie & Son, Inc., Mauricetown, N. J.
Tough Environmental regulations and slumping economy were given as the reasons contributing to the closing of Textron, Inc.'s Fanner Manufacturing Division. The com-pany which has gradually been closing down operations over the past year has now closed its steel equipment and chaplet production lines. Fanner had been in business for 80 years.
The Metropolitan Brass Founders Association will hold their annual dinner-dance at the International Hotel, John F. Kennedy Airport on Saturday, October 14, 1972.
AL WENZEL, Birdsboro Corporation, Birdsboro, Pa., is now acting as a consultant. He was formerly V.P. and Works Manager and will, by July, have completed 40 years of consecutive association with Birdsboro. His grandfather and father also worked all their lives with Birdsboro-3 generations—a total of 106 years of combined service to the foundry industry. You can hardly find this kind of associ-ation today.
Three ferrous foundry societies representing about 77 percent of total foundry business have joined together in a group called the Cast Metals Federation. The three, all headquartered in Cleveland, include the Gray & Ductile Iron Founders Society, Malleable Founders Society and Steel Founders Society of America.
The T &RI Course Schedule for the summer months is as follows:
July 13.14 - No, Bake Cores and Molds at AFS. Aug. 1-3 - Gating and Risering - Cast Irons at AFS. Aug. 1-3 - Gating and Risering - Nonferrous at AFS. Aug. 23-25 - Gating and Risering of Castings in Mexico Sept. 6-8 - Induction Melting Workshop—Toledo, Ohio
We wish to extend our thanks to ED KLANK, JIM HATTEN III and BILL BINDER for their help in our
H news reporting and other details involved in another suc-cessful year for what we consider one of the Society's better monthly news bulletins.
The Conestoga Foundrymen will hold their annual out-ing on Saturday July 22, at the Stone Barn, Millersville, Pa.
