American Fundamentalists (Christ's Entry into Washington in 2008)

Musician/multimedia artist Joel Pelletier's "American Fundamentalists (Christ's Entry intoWashington in 2008)", a large (over 8x14 feet) acrylic painting on canvas, was inspired by andbased upon James Ensor's classic1888 Belgian pre-expressionist masterpiece "Christ's Entry intoBrussels in 1889" (hanging at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA). Joel's 21st-century updatedepicts current American religious, corporate and political fundamentalists and their lackeyswhooping it up in a big parade celebrating the return of Jesus, as 2008 Washington burns, thesky is a permanent nuclear red, and everywhere snipers and military aircraft stand guard.

The artist hosts seminars/forums across the country (along with the display of the actualpainting) on the issues of American religious, political and corporate Fundamentalism and thethreat to both democracy and faith. The painting acts as a backdrop and a reference pointfor the discussion with invited speakers and the assembled audience. These meetings havebeen held across the United States, at varied locations including colleges, churches andgalleries, as well as at fundraisers for voter information organizations. 2005 event locations willinclude Philadelphia, Albany, Columbus, Ann Arbor and Chicago.

About the ArtistJoel Pelletier is an independent multimedia artist (painter, designer, composer & musician)living in North Hollywood, CA. He has a degree in Classical Music Composition from The HarttSchool of Music, University of Hartford, CT, where he also studied painting (at the Hartford ArtSchool) with Rudolph Zallinger (painter of the famous dinosaur mural "The Age of Reptiles" atYale's Peabody Museum). "American Fundamentalists" was Joel's first public showing of hisvisual work, having concentrated on music since coming to Los Angeles in 1988.
