2. 1920s During the 1920s jazz music became very popular inAmerica and worldwide. New dances were created to showcasethe fast beat of the blues and ragtime.Jazz music is a genre of music which originated fromAfrican American roots. Jazz music widely uses syncopation,which is not playing notes on the beat.A popular artist of the time was Benny Goodman, whoplayed the clarinet. He was one of the only white Americanswho had success in the genre of jazz.One of the best known artists of the time was LouisArmstrong. Duringthe early 1930s the popular music was a jazzypre-swing music by Louis Armstrong and FletcherHenderson. During the later 1930s the rhythmand blues songs were recorded by Ellington, BillieHoliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Cleo Patra Brown.Additionally, during the 1930s music recorded bywomen began to become famous.The swing music was recorded by TommyDorsey, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw. Other popularartists included Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.In jazz, pure jazz and blues were becoming famouswith artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, LouisArmstrong and Nat King Cole. Hip-Hopand RapHip-hop and rap music wasborn in New York city in AfricanAmerican communities in the innercity. Rap music had a tough timebecoming popular because in thebeginning MTV refused to show orplay music by black artists. After lotsof criticism, MTV finally played themusic and the genre began to getpopular.With the music on MTV it gaveviewers a chance to see andunderstand the genre and rapbecame the new rock n roll.In this genre artists like RunDMC, Grandmaster Flash, TheBeastie Boys, Little Cool J, and thefemale rapper group Salt n Pepathis music began to take off. 40. NewWaveThis genre began inthe 1970s and ended inthe mid 1980s. The soundof this music was tied inwith punk rock and dancemusic. This music usedcool instruments likesynthesizers and electronicinstruments. This genrewas played a lot on MTVbecause it was categorizedwith pop music.These bands hadunique styles that wouldbecome popular with youthculture. Some of the bandswere Duran Duran,Blondie, Billy Idol, and TheCulture Club. 41. HairMetalIn the 1980s hair metalbands had roots in heavy metal,punk rock, and traditional rockmusic to come up with theirunique sound. These songs werenormally party anthems, orpower ballads that focused onthemes like, outlaws, drugs, andwomen.This genre was called hairmetal because in these groupsmembers would have longflowing hair. Now people are becoming famousthrough reality TV and vocal competitions, such asAmerican Idol which started in the early 21st century.Now anybody, poor or rich, can make music. Theindustry has surely changed over the past one hundredyears, but one thing is certain, Americans cannot getenough music! 54.
