Our mission at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA)

is to collect, record and preserve the pedigrees of American Paint

Horses, and to stimulate and regulate all matters pertaining to

the promotion, history, breeding and exhibition of this breed.

Our success depends on our ability to provide fiscally responsible

and efficient services to our members. We aspire to excellence

in recordkeeping, reporting, recruiting, educating and

supporting our membership, so that we may inspire confidence

and create in them a desire to use our services. APHA serves

both the breed and our members by being aware of the

industry and market, and of the needs, opportunities

and challenges of our members.

I am always inspired by the level of commitment given to our organization by our dedicated members. As you will discover from this Annual Report, we are about 85,000 members strong, with people hailing

from 43 nations and territories around the world.APHA has grown to be one of the largest and most successful breed organizations in the world today, thanks

to the hard work of our members, and their continued commitment to our success. That drive and dedication to serve the Paint Horse breed is most obvious in our Paint Horse people who

sign on for multi-year participation, and especially lifetime memberships.Steadily, our lifetime membership rolls have risen over the past several years. In 2008, for example,

the number of APHA lifetime members stood at a record 5,184. In 2003, that number was 3,649.Just in the past 5 years, we have seen a 42 percent increase in the number of lifetime members.

This is remarkable in the context of our history. We started with only a few dozen members and fewhundred horses in 1962. Our founders worked hard in the early years to prove that American Paint Horseshad the talent, athletic ability and intelligence to excel in thecompetitive arena. And their solid conformation and colorfulcoat patterns made them standouts.

It didn’t take long, however, for the whole world to discoverwhat our early founders knew all along.

Today, we’re closing in on nearly 1 million registered AmericanPaint Horses and we have tens of thousands of members whofaithfully support our breed through their participation in APHA.

If you are an APHA member, I’d like to ask you to renewyour commitment to our great organization. If you enjoy PaintHorses, and you are not a member yet, I’d like to invite youto join us.

And most of all, I want to salute those members who aremaking lifetime commitments to supporting our greatorganization and our outstanding American Paint Horses.

Through your example, our organization will persevere inour mission to advance the American Paint Horse breed.

Sincerely,

Lex SmurthwaiteAPHA Executive Director

I am privileged to have been elected by my peers to the position of president of the American Paint HorseAssociation. It is a role that carries great responsibility and I pledge to work hard to advance our greatassociation and magnificent American Paint Horse breed.

Fortunately, I have a great Executive Committee to assist me, and nearly 85,000 dedicated membersof one of the largest horse breed organizations in the world today.

One of the first orders of business we undertook was to listen to the input from our directors and those members. With that in mind, we expanded ourWorld Championship Paint Horse Series to include two shows this year.

We fully expect this show series to be the foundation on which we build a successful World Showprogram going forward.

A Summer World Championship Show will be held June 22 – July 4. We are happy to report that the showwill include an expanded program of Novice Youth World Championship classes. Also, starting in 2009,all Novice Youth class winners will receive World Championship titles and buckles for their efforts. The show will also feature our popular and successful line-up of World Championship Youth events, along with a select number of Amateur and Open classes. These classes will include Cutting,Reining, Roping and Working Cow Horse. Also featured will be Team Sorting and Team Penning.

The second installment of the show will run in the fall.It is set for November 2 – 14. Most of the Amateur and OpenWorld Championship classes—with the exception of Cutting,Reining, Roping and Working Cow Horse, Team Sortingand Team Penning— will be part of the APHA Fall WorldChampionship Show.

Included in the fall show will be an expanded program of“Slot classes,” offering exciting paybacks based on paid “slot”reservations. And that’s not all. We’ll also see some exciting newBreeders’ Futurity events. I will give you further details as plansdevelop, so stay tuned.

The Breeders’ Futurity is a prestigious competition featuringthe finest American Paint Horses and exhibitors in the world. They will compete in a select slate of classes designed toshowcase the offspring of APHA Breeders’ Trust-subscribedstallions and the mares bred to these stallions. For details, visit apha.com/breedersfuturity.

Also, thanks to your involvement, the American Paint HorseFoundation had a great year, with a 97 percent increase in itsmajor fundraising projects. A new therapeutic riding initiative has also been established.

We are currently working with the Foundation on a very exciting outing at Convention 2009 inColorado Springs. It will include a trail ride, dinner dance, auction and therapeutic riding demonstration at a nearbystable. We are expecting several regional clubs in the area to participate. And most exciting of all, we expect to haveguests who are not currently members, but will join us for the ride to see what APHA is all about. This is a chance forus all to be great ambassadors for our association and help our a great cause at the same time.

With our good news also come challenges. Certainly, we at APHA, like the rest of the horse industry, arefeeling the pinch of the economic situation of our world today. But it is encouraging that we are growing asteady base of dedicated, multi-year members. We are also continuing to reach out to potential new memberswith innovative programs. By maintaining the members we have and recruiting others to join us, we can makeimprovements in 2009, and we’ll need your help. We all need to be APHA ambassadors.

People like you got us here and will carry us to new heights in the future. I look forward to our continuedwork together.

Sincerely,

John CorbinAPHA President

The now-official recession, which had itsbeginning in December 2007, certainlyhad an impact on APHA and its membersin 2008. But the past year also had mile-stones, highlights and innovations designedto carry the Association forward into ahopefully better 2009.

The Association continued its work to keepAPHAon the technological forefront and pro-vide members with more on-line services.APHA’s Information Technology team devel-oped and launched a Show Management Ser-vices Program that enabled show secretariesandmanagers to verify exhibitormembershipsinstantly on-line. Summer marked the 5-yearanniversary of on-line foal registration. Thispopular process has grown from just 9% oftotal registrations in 2004 to almost 24% in2008. APHA is developing ways to make thisprocess even faster and easier.

Feature articles and cover stories aboutAPHA and American Paint Horses appearedin many premier equine publications, includ-ingWesternHorseman,Horse &Rider,Horse Il-lustrated, Cowboys & Indians, American Cow-boy,The Equine Journal,NewWestern,QuarterHorse News, The Trail Rider, Western Horse,NRHAReiner,Young Rider,Equestre, and otherpublications around the world. The value ofthis editorial coverage combinedwith newspa-per articles, and radio and television coverageis estimated to exceed $640,000.

Reaching the $3 million sire mark is a rareaccomplishment in just about every equinediscipline. Paint racing saw two stand-outsires—Texas Hero, owned by Buddy Albin ofDenton, Texas, and Judys Lineage, owned byfather and son Henry and Chuck Bowlan, re-spectively, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma—achievethis distinction in 2008.

Got Country Grip captured the interest ofsports fans all over the world as he continuedhis quest in 2008 for the world record for con-secutive undefeated races. The 5-year-old SolidPaint-Bred gelding secured his 16th win dur-ing an allowance race in March, tying theNorth American record of races won held byThoroughbred greats Cigar, Citation, Hal-lowed Dreams and Mister Frisky. In April, heattempted to become one of only two race-horses in modern history to win 17 consecu-tive races. Bust N Moves, a 4-year-old graySolid Paint-Bred gelding earned his first win ofthe year and proved to be the spoiler of “Grip’s”winning streak in front of a record-settingcrowd at Remington Park.Major sports media

picked up onGot Country Grip’s run into therecord books and Paint racing received moremainstream press coverage than ever before.

Several long-term projects were imple-mented in 2008 and paid off in a big way.Early in the year, APHA began a registrationincentive for both Regular Registry and SolidPaint-Breds that continues to offer a dis-counted fee for Paint Horses 2 years old andolder. APHA encouraged owners to takeadvantage of the opportunity to register olderPaintHorses at a greatly reduced rate. The sec-ond portion of the Registration Incentive con-tinues to allow current owners to transfer own-ership of a registered American Paint Horsemultiple times for a one-time fee of $15. Thisincentive program resulted in 2,472 additionalregistrations in 2008.

In 2008, Paint Horse Journal writerAbigail Wilder developed a monthly seriesof exercise and nutritional tips designedspecifically to help subscribers get in shapeto become better and healthier riders.On-line exercise videos, monthly logs, andsuggestions to supersize the workouts wereavailable via painthorsejournal.com.

APHA members and their horses madenews throughout the year. In January, theGuinness Book ofWorld Records registered an

11-year-old Paint mare, JJS Summer Breeze,as having the longest tail at 12.5 feet.

Big Chex To Cash was named to join theBreyer® stable in 2009 as themost recent rein-ing addition to Breyer’s product line-up sinceanother Paint Horse, Colonels Smokingun, was honored in 2002. At only six years old, thestunningly gorgeous dappled palomino overoBig ChexToCash has lifetime earnings of over$200,000 and holds the title to multiplenational reining championships. Sired byNu Chex To Cash (AQHA) and out of SnipOGun (AQHA), Big ChexToCash is ownedby 23 Partnership, stands at stud in SanMarcos, California, and was pictured on thecover of APHA’s 2008 Rule Book.

According tothe APHA database, the Association hasregistered only 323 sets of twins since itsinception in 1962.

Member Cornelious “Paul” Cleveland,73, of Houston, Texas, was inducted intothe Cowboys of Color Hall of Fame in2008. The trainer has been turning out toproping horses that excel in rodeo and horseshow competition for decades, includingseveral Paint Horses and the Associationawarded him a certificate for his lifetime

achievements with Paint Horses. One ofCleveland’s first successes with Paints camewith Allen Star Dust, a brown tobiano stal-lion owned by Napoleon Allen of Hous-ton, Texas. The horse was foaled in 1962—the year that APHA’s predecessor—theAmerican Paint Stock Horse Association—was formed.

More than 130 equestrians rode for acause May 3, when they joined the Ameri-can Paint Horse Association and BenbrookStables for their second annual “Saddle Up!for St. Jude” benefit trail ride and auctionin Benbrook, Texas. tured Youth representing Australia, Canada,France, Germany, the Netherlands, Swedenand the United States competing in fourdivisions: trail, showmanship, horseman-ship and reining. Team Germany rode awaywith the gold, followed by Team Canadaand The Dutch Diamonds.

In an effort to allow a longer period of timefor young horses to mature before competingon a world-class level, APHA split off someWorld Championship classes from its summershow in 2008. APHA’s much-anticipatedinaugural Fall Championship Show was heldNovember 6–15 at theWill Rogers MemorialCenter. It featuredWorld Championship titleclasses for weanling and yearling halter, year-ling longe line and 2-year-old performancehorses and showcased new added-money andjackpot classes, slot classes and select Challengeand Sweepstakes classes.

“It was a very good first step for a completeFall Show,” said exhibitor and APHANational Director Ron Shelly. “The relaxedenvironment and time to exercise horsesinside was a big plus. Looking back ten yearsfrom now this will be considered an extremelyimportant step in growing our Associationand our World Show venue.”

The horse show included 873 entries and503 horses in 85 classes from 38 U.S. statesand Canadian provinces, as well as fromAustralia, Italy, Mexico and Sweden, and paidout $436,909 in added money.

Paint racing proved to have another exciting year full of continuedgrowth, new records, top performers and major news coverage during2008. The racing program saw 573 Paint Horses start in 668 APHA-recognized races across 18 states, competing for more than $5 million.Staying on track with the previous year, Got Country Grip and SMCountry Snowman reached new heights on their way to being namedPaint racing World Champions.

This past year was Got Country Grip’s fourth year dominating thetrack. In the course of 2008, the 2003 Solid Paint-Bred tied the mod-ern day North American record on the track for all breeds as he wonhis 16th consecutive race. On the way to victory, Grip’s name was seenworldwide as his story was picked up by news organizations includingthe Associated Press, USA Today, ESPN, NBC, Fox and many others.

The gelding, owned by Jimmy Maddux of Weatherford, Texas, was named World Cham-pion Solid Paint-Bred forthe fourth consecutiveyear, thus setting an addi-tional new record. On hisway to re-writing therecord books, Grip earned$287,028—making himthe highest money-earningpaint racehorse in history.

Also finishing 2008 on ahigh note was SM CountrySnowman. The 2005loudly-colored overo Paintearned his second WorldChampion Regular Reg-istry title in as many years.Included in his many acco-lades, SM Country Snow-man, owned by Rafter SM Ranch of Wagoner, Oklahoma, became thehighest earning 3-year-old Paint racehorse of all time, and the only tobreak the $250,000 mark. With his lifetime earnings at $250,861 atthe year’s end, the stallion’s impact on Paint racing has only begun as hewill stand at stud in 2009.

Another exciting move for Paint racing was the redesign of theindustry’s magazine—Paint Racing—which is devoted entirely to thesport of Paint racing and barrel racing. For all the information on theprogram, visit paintracing.com.

The American Junior Paint Horse Association continues to grow strong, thanks to theefforts of members who have participated in leadership and community service initiativesthroughout 2008.

Throughout Sammie Jo Stone’s 2007-2008 presidential term, her Presidential Service Pro-ject, Be A Lifesaver, was aimed at helping people and animals that have been involved in anatural disaster, such as a fire, flood or even an earthquake.

The goal was to encourage AjPHA members and clubs to simply donate items such as food, clothing, first-aid kits and animal supplies to their local Red Cross. Local Paint Horse clubscould host canned food drives at horse shows and riding events, or become certified in CPR.

The AjPHA regional club that exhibited the most dedication, effort and caring attitudetoward the project was awarded the From the Heart Award, a $500 cash award sponsoredby Markel Insurance. In 2008, the award was presented to the Mississippi Junior Paint HorseClub and its members at the 2008 World Championship Paint Horse Show.

MjPHC members raised money for the American Red Cross by making pattern books forthe Dixie Nationals, selling t-shirts and holding a cake auction. The service project hit closeto home for many youth in the club. In early 2008, Mississippi was hit by several tornados, and the club’s donations helped their local communities with relief efforts.

Another great learning opportunity for Junior members in 2008 was the annual YouthLeadership Conference, held in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the APHANational Convention. AjPHA members travel from across the nation to attend this confer-ence each year. Conference attendees learned how they could complete tasks more efficientlyby working together, heard a presentation on preparing for college and public speaking andfinished a great day with a lesson in wardrobe, posture and grooming.

Conference attendees also were able to tour the San Diego Zoo and Coronado Beach. After a sandcastle building contest at the beach, the Southern California Paint Horse Clubtreated attendees to a cookout.

With nearly 7,000 members, AjPHA promotes youth involvement with AmericanPaint Horses worldwide. AjPHA is committed to producing America’s finest youngequestrians who are strong in moral character and active in their communities and re-gional clubs.

I am happy to report to you that the American Paint Horse Foundation is doing “well” anddoing “good.”

Doing “well,” is how we’re doing. In 2008, we experienced one of our best fundraising years onrecord. In addition, we are creating awareness and gaining recognition for the wonderful initiativeswe’ve established. Add to that, a clearly defined mission and set of goals, and you can be assuredthat the American Paint Horse Foundation will continue to do well for the future.

Doing “good,” is what we’re doing. We’ve established a history-making $25,000 therapeutic riding fund, simply by asking gener-ous people for their support. Regional Clubs, like the OklahomaPaint Horse Club, have stepped forward to become the program’sbiggest benefactor and driver. We have visited several thousandschool children to teach them about Paint Horses in public schoolclassrooms. We’ve saddled up more than 1,500 kids on PaintHorses for the first time in their lives, and we have a youthscholarship program that has given out more than a half milliondollars since it was established.

As you are aware, Paint Horses have the power to inspire us.When we have a horse at the end of a lead rope, we attract atten-tion. People love horses, especially Paints, and see goodness whenthey look at our horses. Thousands of people want to reach out andtouch our horses, and countless children and adults want to ride.

That beauty and attraction that our horses possess also helpinspire people to do great things. It’s the reason we were able toraise $30,000 the past two years on benefit trail rides for thechildren of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Paint peopleand their friends just want to partner up with their horses to help.

If you are a Foundation friend who has supported us in the past, please be assured that yourgenerosity and hard work are touching lives in many significant ways.

If you’re new to our organization, I invite you to join us on our mission to improve our worldthrough the “Power of Paints.”

Please help us do “well” so we can continue to do “good.”

Sincerely,

Jerry CircelliAPHF Director

I have had the pleasure over the past several years to visit with many of our trainers to enlist their helpfor our “Find A Trainer” program.

This has become one of our most successful programs, not only because it has helped raise over$91,000 over the past decade, but also because it links horse owners with Paint Horse trainers.

It becomes a win/win/win situation, where the Foundation gets support for its youth scholarship program, trainers grow their businesses, and horse owners find places where they can get their horses schooled.Throughthe "Find a Trainer" program, the American Paint Horse Foundationworks with horse trainers who allow fees, normally charted for theirservices, to be donated directly to the Foundation. Through theFoundation, interested horse owners purchase the services of a trainerto work with their horse for one month for $500. The funds aredonated to the Foundation and used for youth scholarships. Trainersgain exposure for their businesses and owners get their horses trainedby a professional.

Trainers receive the following benefits:• Monthly listings in the Paint Horse Journal “Find A Trainer”

ad series.• Great exposure on our “Find A Trainer” Web page, with a link

to their business.• Valuable listings in direct mail to thousands of Paint owners

and APHA members.• A barn banner, special certificate for display and Foundation

gift item.• Extra exposure in 2009, as the program receives unprecedented

publicity.• The satisfaction of helping youngsters with a meaningful

scholarship program.

Horse owners benefit these ways:• They can find a talented trainer, dedicated to advancing the American Paint Horse breed.• Owners do business with a trainer with whom they share something in common – Paint Horses and

an interest in helping our youth.• Owners become a valued friend of the Foundation.• The knowledge that they are helping develop our leaders of tomorrow through the Foundation’s

youth scholarship program.• Certificate to display proudly in their office and barn.• Free Foundation gift for their support. If you are a trainer, I welcome your support. If you are a horse owner, please consider out list of

trainers, which can be found in the Paint Horse Journal and at aphfoundation.org.Working together, we can improve our world through the American Paint Horse Foundation.

Sincerely,

Cheryl NewmanAPHF President

American Paint Horse Foundationenvisions a better world on the horizon

Thanks to the efforts of countless friends and benefactors ofthe American Paint Horse Foundation, the charitable organiza-tion experienced one of its best fundraising years to date.

Recently, the Foundation re-emphasized its mission andexpanded its mission to do good and improve our worldthrough “The Power of Paints.”Specifically, the Foundation’s goals include:

• fostering positive youth development;• promoting healthy lifestyles;• improving lives and communities through interaction

with Paint Horses;• instilling pride in the heritage of the American Paint

Horse and APHA;• and funding research that ensures the health and vitality

of the American Paint Horse. To its credit, the Foundation has awarded more than

$530,000 in youth scholarships since it was formed. It hasalso helped subsidize APHA’s larger-than-lifesize statue infront of its headquarters and is undertaking ambitious newprojects, such as supporting therapeutic riding programsinvolving Paint Horses.

Proof that the “spirit of giving” is higher now than ever be-fore to the Foundation can be found in its recent fundraisers, which include:

• The New Holland Tractor giveaway, with a record $39,500raised;

• A filly fundraiser of more than $26,000;• An unprecedented, new therapeutic riding fund established

at $25,000;• World Show warm-up class participation, which has netted

an all-time high of more than $15,000 for the Foundationand will continue at both the Summer and Fall WorldChampionship Shows;

• An APHA Workshop Auction that raised over $7,500.An enhanced “Find a Trainer” program was also launched

and serves as a great Foundation fundraiser, but also helpslink horse owners with outstanding Paint Horse trainersaround the country. In this program, trainers donate onemonth of service while horse owners pay a training feedirectly to the Foundation scholarship program. Thisenhanced program will create greater exposure for generoustrainers. Horse owners, in turn, will be able to select fromsome of the finest Paint Horse trainers in the country.

The Foundation has also added a “Heritage Tree” at APHAheadquarters. The tree will commemorate the people withvision and horses with heart and talent who have made APHAa world-class breed organization. Past APHA President BillHittle of Hugoton, Kansas, stepped forward at a recentAPHA Convention in San Diego, California, to buy the firstcommemorative leaf at $500.

Also at that APHA Convention gathering, the “spirit ofgiving” among APHA members was underscored during aformal “Presidential Inauguration Dinner.”

Oklahoma Paint Horse Club members Brad Perkins andKevin Hardcastle enlisted the help of Past APHA President andauctioneer Tom Elliott for an impromptu auction during thedinner to benefit the Foundation’s therapeutic riding initiative.Earlier in the year, during Workshop in Irving, Texas, Perkins,Hardcastle and member Ron Shelly were part of a “bidding war”that resulted in the sale of a St. Jude necktie that brought in$1,300 for St. Jude’s and the Foundation. The tie had been wonand donated back several times at the APHA Workshop.

That tie resurfaced during Convention, went up for saleand was sold to Lori Nevin of Des Moines, Washington, for$1,000. The money was added to $10,000 already donated bythe Oklahoma Paint Horse Club to benefit therapeutic riding, which ended the year with $25,000 pledged.

Add it all up, and major fundraisers nearly doubled for2008 over the previous year, up 97 percent, and totaled morethan $120,000.

Thank you to our donors, friends and supporters who keepthe American Paint Horse Foundation—the “heart” of theAmerican Paint Horse Association—beating strong.

APHA Past President Bill Hittle and his wife, Linda, ofHugoton, Kansas, stepped forward to buy the first leaf on theFoundation’s new “Heritage Tree.” American Paint HorseFoundation President Cheryl Newman, center, gladly accepted.

A necktie that was sold, donated back and resold for a totalof $1,300 during APHAWorkshop last spring in Irving,Texas, made its way back to Convention in San Diego,California. Oklahoma Paint Horse Club members BradPerkins, left, and Kevin Hardcastle, the tie owners, sold itwith the help of auctioneer and APHA Past President TomElliott. Lori Nevin, second from left, of Des Moines,Washington, bought the tie for $1,000. Money will be usedto help fund the Foundation’s therapeutic riding initiatives.
