Brett was the second of 4 sons of the legendary

American photographer Edward Weston and

Flora Chandler. He was featured in his first

international exhibition in Germany at the age of

17 and his first one man retrospective at the De

Young museum in San Francisco at age 21.

“His earliest works reflected a sophisticated

sense of abstraction. He often flattened the

plane, engaging in layered space, an artistic

style more commonly seen among the abstract

expressionists.” He produced many notable

publications including “Voyage of the Eye”

published by Aperture in 1975.

Brassai (Gyula Halasz)

(1899-1994)

Gyula Halasz was born at Brasso, in Transylvania, a

part of Romania that at the time belonged to

Hungary. In 1917 he studied at the Academy of Fine

Arts in Budapest. In 1924 he realized his dream of

living and working in Paris. He adopted the name

Brassai after his hometown in 1925. He worked as a

journalist in Paris and pursued painting, sculpting and drawing before devoting himself to photography. He

was a close friend of Picasso and was also

influenced by friends such as Paul Eluard; Salvador

Dali and Andre Kertesz. It was the influence of Kertesz that led to his most notable images of Paris

by Night.

Andre Kertesz

(1894-1985)

Kertesz was a Hungarian born photojournalist known

for the photo essay and his contribution to photographiccomposition. He moved to Paris in 1925 and worked for

France’s first illustrated magazine “Vu”. He achieved

critical success in the DaDa movement before emigrating

to the U.S. in 1936 due to the persecution of the Jews and

the threat of WW II. He worked for many magazines in the U.S.

Including “Harper’s Bazaar”; “Life”; “Look” and “House

and Garden”. In his later life he was solo exhibited world wide

including a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in 1964.In 1979 he began working with Polaroid as an experimental

photographer with their new camera the SX-70. He continued

that throughout the rest of his life.
