VP Technical Report By John Fischer Jr.

Last month’s presenter, Andy Quoos, presented valuable information on Pumps and Condensate Neutralization. With new requirements for higher efficient water heaters, the introduction of acidic condensate into the waste stream of the building, a way to treat such discharge was provided. In addition to normal methods of removing the sewage waste depending on gravity, alternate methods were discussed including single fixture and low flows to commercial waste discharges that were unable to discharge by gravity to the waste system. This month a presentation will be provided by CSA Group titled “Navigating the Product Certification Maze”. This presentation will discuss product certifications, those that carry the very familiar CSA. The presentation will be provided by Ramiro Mata, Strategic Account Manager and/or Lisa Reiheld, US Mark Awareness Manager for CSA. It promises to be a very interesting presentation. Suggestions for meeting presentations this year and next would be very much appreciated.. Continuing education certificates will be available for this meeting and several certificates remain for other months that were not previously retrieved. See you at the last meeting of 2015. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving

VPLegislativeReport,

Nicholas Hipp

St. Louis County Plumbing Code Review The St. Louis County Plumbing Code Review Committee is still reviewing chapter 10 of the UPC and County Ordinances Traps and Interceptors. So far this has been an interesting and much debated topic. The number of fixtures discharged into a grease interceptor was revised from a maximum of (4) fixtures to unlimited as long as it doesn’t exceed the DFU or max flow rate of the interceptor. Below is a list of recommended code changes that will be discussed further at the next meeting. 1. 1014.3.5 Purpose to add: Gravity grease interceptors shall have documented 3rd party testing verifying separation performance and be manufactured in compliance with IAPMO/ANSI Z1001-2007. 2. 1017.2.1 Components and Materials to add: Oil interceptors shall be protected inside and out with an approved corrosion resistant coating. Precast concrete interceptors shall be constructed with a minimum wall thickness of 4”, concrete strength equal to minimum 4000 psi, and protected inside and out by a corrosion resistant coating with a minimum thickness of 18Mil. Fiberglass interceptors shall be constructed resins that comply with ASTM C-581 and meets IAPMO Material and Property Standard PS 80-2008, for clarifiers. Poured concrete interceptors are prohibited. 1017.2 Design of Interceptors to add: each manufactured interceptor that is rated shall be stamped or labeled by the manufacturer with the appropriated certification and maintain a third party certification of its products. This should be another very productive and interesting discussion for those who design systems utilizing grease interceptors. The next St. Louis County Plumbing Code Review Committee meeting is December 9th at 7:30 am, in the 6th Floor Training Room, 41 S. Central Ave., St. Louis, MO 63105. The 6th Floor Training Room is located in the southwest corner of the building immediately adjacent to both the elevator lobby and the restrooms.
