VisvaldisZiedinšTravelsintheImaginationWorkingquietlyandinnearobscurityduringthedarkdaysoftheLatvianSovietperiod,artistVisvaldisZiedinšamassedaremarkablebodyofover3,000works.Thissurveybringshiswittyassemblages,sculptures,collagesandpaintingstoAmericanaudiencesforthefirsttime.Theseworksrevealavividimaginationunfetteredbymaterialandpoliticalpressuresandbearcomparisontocontemporaneousexplorationsbysuchbetterknownavant-gardistsasPabloPicasso,JohnCage,JosephCornell,RobertRauschenberg,AntoniTàpiesandArman.ThisexhibitionispartoftheLatvianPresidencyoftheCounciloftheEuropeanUnionpublicdiplomacyandcultureprogram.SpecialthankstotheEmbassyoftheRepublicofLatviaandtheLatvianInstituteforContemporaryArtsfortheirsupport.

Stone,SilenceandSpeech:SculpturesbySyGresserOvermorethansixdecades,SyGresser(1926-2014)wrestledwithissuesandideasthatdefinehumanity.Beginningasapoet,hemetamorphosedintoasculptorofstoneandwood.Ifnothingismoresilentthanastone,Gresser’schisel,harnessedtohisvoraciousmind,yieldedadistinctvocabularythatinterwoveabstractionwithfigurationandproducedacontinuous,broadlyfocusedandeloquentcommentaryontheworld.

RealismTransformed:JohnWinslow'sWildNewWorldIntheearlytomid-1980s,masterfulWashingtonrealistJohnWinslowengineeredaseriesofstunningchangesinhiswork:preciselydefinedspacesbecameambiguous,rightanglesbecameswoopingcurves,andonce-staticfiguresleftgravitybehindtodancegracefullyandcrazilythroughtheair.Byradicallyrecastinghisart,Winslowsetthestageforthesurprising,vibrantandequallymasterfulbodyofworkthatisthefocusofthisexhibition.

Outliers:KurtGodwinandBetsyPackardCuratedbyJ.W.Mahoney,OutliersisadialoguebetweentwoWashington-areaartistswhohavebeenworkingoutsidetheboundariesofmainstreamcontemporaryartforoverthreedecades.KurtGodwin(1956-2014)andBetsyPackardhaveeffectivelytransformedordinaryobjects,foundimages,andsimplematterintofundamentallynewconditionsofmeaning.Suchexpansionsofart'srealpossibilitiesarewhatoutliersdo.

MichaelGross:AbstractionMichaelGross,painterandprintmaker,offersexpressiveandemotion-filledworksusingakaleidoscopeofcolor.Grosscreatesartas“ameansofgrapplingwiththeimpulsesandstrugglesthatmakeupthewayIseemyplaceintheworld.”Throughhisvisuallexicon,whichisdevoidofideologicalreference,Michaelseekstocreateorderfromchaos.Hislyricalcompositionsofconcatenatedlines,texturedsurfacesandrichhuesinvokeAbstractExpressionismandpayhomagetotheartistswhoinspirehiswork:WillemDeKooning,RichardDiebenkornandJacksonPollock.

Hiroshima-NagasakiAtomicBombExhibitionIncommemorationofthe70thanniversaryoftheattacks,thispowerfulshowincludes20artifactscollectedfromthedebrisofthe1945atomicbombingsofHiroshimaandNagasaki,aswellas6

largefoldingscreensthatdepictthehorrorsoftheevent.1995NobelPeacePrizenominees,IriandToshiMaruki,createdatotalof15screensover32years,from1950.Thisexhibition,madepossiblebytheHiroshimaPeaceMemorialMuseumandtheNagasakiAtomicBombMuseum,ismeanttodeepenanunderstandingofthedamagewroughtbynuclearweaponsandinspirepeaceinthe21stcentury.ThisexhibitionwasorganizedincollaborationwithProfessorPeterKuznick,DirectoroftheNuclearStudiesInstituteatAmericanUniversity.

PulseoftheFutureContemporaryChineseArtcapturedtheworld'sattentioninthe1980s.Nowthenextgenerationiscomingofageandstakingitsownclaimforartisticprecedence.TheexhibitionwasorganizedincollaborationwiththeBeijingYouthInternationalCultureandArtsAssociation.

WalterMcConnell:ItinerantEdensAseriesofmalefiguresderivedfromfamilialmodelsarecentraltoWalterMcConnell’sinstallation,OfFableandFacsimile.Renderedinmoist,unfiredclayandsealedinterrarium-likeplasticenclosures,McConnell’searthenbodiesappearfragile,apparitional—sustainedmomentarilyintheirfictionallandscapes—positingimpermanenceastheinevitableconditionofnaturalsystems.Thefiguresintheinstallationsaredigitallyscannedandprototypedfromlivemodels,includingtheartist,his83-year-oldfather,andhisnephew,representingthreegenerationsofmalefamilymembers.Afullbodyscanner,housedintheSchoolofHumanEcologyatCornellUniversity,producedthefiles;prototypedmodelswereCNCmilledor3Dprinted,plastermoldsweremade.Thefiguresappearingintheinstallationareterracottaclays,castandpulledfromthesemolds.WalterMcConnellisbestknownforhismoistclayinstallationshousedinplasticenclosuresthataddresstherelationshipbetweennatureandculture.HisworkhasbeenwidelyexhibitedinternationallyandinvenuesacrosstheUS,includingtheDenverArtMuseum,MassMoca,andthePhiladelphiaMuseumofArt.

MaryShaffer:ReflectionsandContradictionsInfluentialsculptorMaryShaffercreatesasite-specificglassandmetal“tool-wall”installationforhersolo-exhibition,tofeatureherfascinationwithdiscardedtools."Itakelovinglycrafted,hand-forgedtools—theepitomeofAmericaninventiveness—topreserveandpaytributetoactivitiesandmethodsofworkingthathavedisappearedfromourmodernlives,"shesays.Inaddition,selectglassworkfromthepastfivedecadesofShaffer'sactivecareerwillbeshown,includingherLight-Catcherseries,whichexploresthewaylightandshadowcreatethreedimensionalform.MaryShafferwasanimportantinfluenceintheearlyglassmovement.She"broughtarttoglassandglasstoart"asartcriticJohnPerraultwrites.DougHeller,aNewYorkartdealer,saysthattheglassworldwasneverthesameafterShafferburstuponthesceneintheearly1970s.Shafferinventedawholenewwaytoworkwithandthinkaboutglass—aprocessshenamed"mid-airslumping.”Shafferhasshownherworkin60museumsworldwide.TheartisthasbeenaprofessoratNewYorkUniversityandWellesleyCollege,andherworkisinthecollectionoftheMetropolitanMuseumofArt,aswellastheMuseumofModernArtinKyoto,Japan,amongmanyothers.

GerhardtKnodel:LettheGamesBegin!InGerhardtKnodel’slatestwork,gaming-basedstrategiesprovidebothavisualandaconceptualpointofentry.Likegameplaying,involvementoftenyieldsunexpectedconsequences.Approachedaspureentertainment,gamescanevolveintounexpectedexperienceswithbothalighteranda

darkerside,subtleshiftsinexpectationrelativetooutcome.Likewisewithart.Hisworkposesquestionsaboutartandlifeinthe21stcentury.Cantheactandassociationsofplayingagamebevisuallycommunicated?Cantherushofexcitementthatcomeswithwinningbefoundinobjectsthatarephysicallyquietandexperiencedatadistance?Canthefrustrationofplayinggamesthatcannotbewonbecomealinkinunderstandingthegoalsofartinwhichtherearenorightorwronganswers?Hisworkcentersonfourgroupsofwork—conceptualgameswithhistorictextiles;visualgames;dexteritygames;andgamingwithideasaboutart.Eachofthegroupsleadstheviewertoartexperiencesinspiredbythoughtsaboutcompetition,accumulationandloss,humanrelationships,mindmanipulation,theendlessrepetitionofthepatternsoflife,andthetensionbetweeninformedauthorityandself-discoveredknowledge.Knodelintendstheworktoprovokeconsiderationoflinkstotheworldoftextilesinunexpectedandprovocativeways.

BeverlyRess:TheWorldisaNarrowBridgeOverthepastseveralyearsBeverlyResshasfocusedondrawingobjectscollectedbynaturalhistoryandmedicalmuseums,thenmanipulatingthepaperonwhichthey'redrawn.Hercloselyobservedrenderingsofobjectscombinewiththeabstractpapermanipulationstocreateacontemporaryformofmementomori.

STUDENTEMPLOYMENT

Eachsemester,themuseumemploys15-20studentgalleryattendants,3-4RegistrarandPreparatorassistants,and3-5museumshopattendants.

ExhibitionExchangeCuratorialPracticestudentsfromAmericanUniversityandVilniusAcademyofArts(VAA)inLithuaniapresentedtwouniqueexhibitionsasapartofaneducationalandartisticexchangebetweenthetwouniversities.Thestudentsfrombothuniversitiesdevelopedtheirskillsinthemanagementofartaswellaspromotionoftheartisticambitionsoftheirfellowstudentsthroughaninternationalexchangeofexhibitions.Underthesupervisionoftheirprofessors,thesestudentspracticedallpracticalstagesofthecuratorialprocess,startingwiththeinceptionofartisticideastotheirpresentationintheformofanexhibitiontotheinternationalpublic.

LostandFound:YoungArtfromLithuaniawasshownattheAmericanUniversityMuseumfromApril25–May24,2015.TheexhibitionwastheresultofasearchforpromisingyoungartistsfromtheVilniusAcademyoftheArtsandthenotionofaso-called“Lost-And-Found”office,thefirstofwhichwasfoundedinParisin1805tocollectitemslostinthecitystreets.Inthisexhibition,thecuratorssearchedforVAAartistsdiscoveringtheiridentity.Theshowpresentsawiderangeofmediavaryingfromtraditionalcraftsmanshiptouniquetechnologicalsolutions.

AsaresponsetotheVAAshowthattookplaceintheAmericanUniversityMuseum,JackRasmussen’scuratorialclasssimilarlyexploredyoungartistsidentitiesintheirexhibitionEPluribusUnumonviewattheVAAfromOctober1-October31,2015."OutofMany,One”isthequotefromtheGreatSealoftheUnitedStatesthatrepresentsthenation’sideals.Outofcountlessindividuals,cultures,andcommunities,onenationemerges.Expressionsofidentityaresimilarlyforged.AmericanUniversityartistsexploredtheconstructionanduseofbuildingofthoseidentities.Theartistsinterpretedthistopicthroughavarietyofperspectivesandmedia.Byconstructingpersonalidentitiesandinvestigatinghowoverarchingculturalnarrativesaresometimesdamagingoruplifting,theartistsdemonstratedhowidentityisbothprescribedandselfdetermined.Unwillingtobedefined,theymanipulated,obscured,andrevealednewidentities.

TheLithuanianEmbassyprovided6studentswithtravelstipendsof$1,000.Thesestipendsensuredthatthestudentscouldassistwiththecuration/installationoftheexhibitionandattendtheopeningofEPluribusUnumatVAA.

TheMuseumONLINEWomenArtistsCampaignwithNationalMuseumofWomenintheArtsInconjunctionwithWomen’sHistoryMonthinMarch,theNationalMuseumofWomenintheArtshostedacampaignonsocialmediacalled“DoYouKnow5WomenArtists?”(#5womenartists)tobuildawarenessofwomenartists,whoareunderrepresentedinarthistory.TheAUMuseumwasinvitedtoparticipateandpostednearlyeverydayofthemonthofMarchaboutwomenartistsinthemuseum’scollection,currentexhibitions,staff-picks,etc.Thecampaigncoincidedwiththemuseum’sfirsteverall-womenartistsseason(Winter2016).Thecollaborativecampaignwasasuccess,gainingfollowers/shares/impressionsofFacebookpoststoalargeraudiencethatwasapartofabiggerconversation.

ArtistTakeoverTheAlperInitiativehostedtheirfirst“artisttakeover”oftheAlperInstagramfeed–invitinganartisttopostundertheAlperhandleforaweek.Theartisttakeoverresultedin38newfollowersforAlperand15forthemuseumandembodiedthemissionofpromotingappreciationofDCartandartists.

WebAsCASmovedtofully-responsivemobilesite,weadjustedourhomepagecontenttobemoremobilefriendly,asabouthalfofourtrafficcomesfrommobile.Thisincludedadjustingthecarouselheadertosimplertext/imagery

Webtrafficisgenerallysteady;itspikesaroundtheopeningofeachseason.FromApril2015-April2016,wereceivedapproximately20,000uniquewebsiteviews.Asidefromourhomepageandthe “Visiting&Directions”page,exhibitionpagesreceivethemosttraffic.Armedwiththisinformation,we’veimprovedthecontent,images,andamountofinformationonexhibitionpages.Weincludelinkstorelatedeventsandpresscoverageonexhibitionpagesmakingthemaone-stopdestination.

OurhighesttrafficonrecordoccurredinJune/July2015relatedtotheHiroshima-Nagasakiexhibition.Thatexhibitionpagealonereceivedover6,000visits,likelyaresultoftheAssociatedPressarticlethatlinkedtothepage.
