PREPARATIONBasecoat the entire plaque with Cool White. You will likely need two coats for the best coverage. Let this dry completely.

To create the unique background, start by creating two separate washes – one of Bright Blue and one of Santa Red. Have a large piece of Plastic Wrap handy (large enough to cover the plaque with one piece).

1. Mist the plaque with water.

2. Have two large Wash brushes handy for the next steps: Load one brush with the Bright Blue Wash and tap the brush over the plaque so the paint droplets splatter onto the plaque.

3. Repeat this step with a clean brush and the Santa Red Wash.

4. Lightly mist over the plaque again with water.

5. Cover the entire plaque with your Plastic Wrap and press down with your hands.

6. Carefully lift up wrap and wad the wrap up into a ball and dab over the damp plaque.

7. If this appears too bold, you can soften the look by then dabbing over the plaque with a dry paper towel.

Remember, no two plaques are going to look exactly the same! You may use as much or as little of the Blue and Red as you like, but be sure to let the Cool White background show through to achieve a great Red, White and Blue eff ect!

Let dry completely before tracing on your main de-sign!

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBEEHIVEThe beehive is based in an equal 50/50 mix of Honey Brown and Marigold. You will likely need two coats for complete coverage. Remember to let the fi rst coat dry before applying the second, for best results!

Once dry, drybrush over the hive with Marigold. I dry-brushed with a back and forth motion, horizontally across the hive.

Finely outline the bee, the beehive and the stripes across the hive with your Black pen or marker. Using a ruler to create the stripes across the hive comes in handy! Once you’ve completed the outlining, shade down the left side of the hive, as well as under the bee and around the left side of the entrance with Her-itage Brick. The entrance hole is painted solid Black with a small curved highlight of Marigold.

LETTERINGThe word “Welcome” is done in Black.

BANNER AND FLAGSBasecoat the ‘white’ parts of all fl ags and the banner with Warm White. Let dry, then drybrush with Snow White. Once dry, trace on the stripes.

All fl ag poles and the pole to the star are based in Espresso. Add a few fi ne lines of Honey Brown to each to highlight. The ball on top of the largest fl ag pole is based with the 50/50 mix of Honey Brown and Mari-gold. Once dry, drybrush with Marigold (alone). High-light with a fi ne accent line of Warm White.

The top half circle of the banner is based with Rook-wood Red. Once dry, drybrush with Santa Red.

All fl ag and banner stripes are based with Rookwood Red as well. (Add an additional coat if necessary). Wet brush Santa Red down the centers of all stripes.

Bottom part of the banner and all fl ag patches are based in Deep Midnight Blue. (Add an additional coat if needed). Drybrush all of these areas with Bright Blue. Once dry, trace on all stars. Paint stars solidly with Warm White.

Shade around the banner’s center circle, around the fl ag’s patches and down the crease in the large fl ag with thinned Rookwood Red.

Finely outline all fl ags, fl ag poles, stars and banner with your Black pen.

LARGE STARBasecoat the large star (on the beehive) solidly with Marigold. You may need two coats for the best cover-age. Drybrush the star with Moon Yellow. Shade the left side of the star with Heritage Brick. Finely outline the star with your Black pen.

CROWBasecoat the crow in Black. Drybrush with Bright Blue. You may want to tone this down a bit. Simply add some Black back into your brush and lightly drybrush over the crow again.

His eye is solid Marigold. The pupil is Black. The dot in the eye and his ‘eyelashes’ are done with Warm White.

Basecoat the crow’s beak with Heritage Brick. Let dry, then shade the beak with Black.

Create a 50/50 mix of Bright Blue and Deep Midnight Blue to add the fi ne lined details to his body (around his wing, etc…)

BEESI preferred to outline the bees fi rst with my Black pen. If you would rather outline them as the last step, that’s fi ne too! I did outline them fi rst with my Black pen, in-cluding their legs and antennae. Fill in the yellow areas on the bees with Saff ron Yellow. All wings are painted with Warm White. The rest of their heads and bod-ies are done in Black. Dot the end of all antennae with Black as well! The little trail behind the fl ying bees is simply made with little dashes and your Black pen.

FINISHINGOnce our project is complete, we will need to seal it. I simply spray sealed mine with Americana’s Matte Spray Finisher.

I hope you enjoyed this Americana project! It is some-thing that could be displayed all year long!
