Rock and Roll Rock and Roll (or simply “Rock”) is a type of popular music that originated in the United States and has been evolving since the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. This form of music bears the influence of the Blues, Jazz, Gospel, and other African American musical styles. The music most often features a “back beat,” a syncopated emphasis on beats 2 and 4 in quadruple meter. Where early Rock also featured the shuffle” rhythm of Jazz and many Blues songs, it later developed a straight, even rhythm which distinguished it from Jazz. In early Rock bands, the saxophone or piano was often the lead instrument. But the electric guitar (which had been invented in the early 1940’s) soon took over, and has been the most popular lead instrument of Rock since the 1950’s. Classic Rock bands have the following instrumentation: 1 or 2 electric guitars, string bass or electric bass guitar, and drum set. Beyond a simple musical style, Rock and Roll greatly influenced lifestyles, fashion, social attitudes, and language. It has been said that Rock and Roll may have contributed to the Civil Rights movement, since young Americans of all races enjoyed this music. Rock  and  Roll       Rock  and  Roll  (or  simply  “Rock”)  is  a  type  of  popular  music  that  originated  in  the  United  States  and  has  been  evolving  since  the  late  1940’s  and  early  1950’s.    This  form  of  music  bears  the  influence  of  the  Blues,  Jazz,  Gospel,  and  other  African-‐American  musical  styles.    The  music  most  often  features  a  “back  beat,”  a  syncopated  emphasis  on  beats  2  and  4  in  quadruple  meter.    Where  early  Rock  also  featured  the  “shuffle”  rhythm  of  Jazz  and  many  Blues  songs,  it  later  developed  a  straight,  even  rhythm  which  distinguished  it  from  Jazz. Early  American  Rock  1940’s  –  1960’s

Progressive  (“Prog”)  Rock  and  “Glam”  Rock  1970’s     Progressive  Rock  music  was  characterized  by  complex  musical  form,  changes  in  tempo  and  texture,  and  full  instrumentation  –  sometimes  sounding  like  an  orchestra.    It  was  not  generally  dance  music,  but  concert  music.    These  bands  were  also  highly  experimental  in  the  recording  studio,  introducing  electronic  keyboard  and  synthesizer  sounds,  and  effects  of  all  kinds.     Jethro  Tull     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTWI0TvnfQ8     Moody  Blues     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-‐9Zr440nXe8
