How to determine the depth of cut:• Slope must start 18 in. or 1½ ft.

How to determine the width of a trench shield:• Trench Shield width determined by

Outside Diameter (OD) of the pipe or the OD of the excavator bucket

• Allow 6 in. of clearance on each side of pipe bell

• Shield should be a minimum of 12 in. wider than the excavator bucket OD

How to determine the length of a trench shield:• Inside length clearance of pipe is

approximately 2 ft. less than the overall length of the shield

• Shield must be 2 to 4 ft. longer than the pipe

How to determine the machine lift capacity:• Lift capacity is 1.5 times the shield

weight at 20 ft. radius at grade

Calculating Depth Ratings:PSF ratings and depths are based on temporary loading.

Lateral pressure per foot of depth:• Type “A” Soil = 25 lbs.• Type “B” Soil = 45 lbs. • Type “C-60” Soil = 60 lbs.• Type “C-80” Soil = 80 lbs.

Depth rating using shield capacity (e.g. 1200 lbs.):• 1200 / 25 = 48 ft.• 1200 / 45 = 27 ft.• 1200 / 60 = 20 ft.• 1200 / 80 = 15 ft.

Soil Definitions:• Apparent cohesion• Cemented soil• Layered soil• Plastic• Saturated soil• Submerged soil

No soil is Type “A” if:• It is fissured• It is subject to vibration• It has been previously disturbed• It is part of a sloped, layered

system which dips into the excavation on a slope of four horizontal to one vertical [4H:1V] or greater

• It is subject to other factors requiring classification as less stable

Type “B” Soil:• Cohesive soil with unconfined

compressive strength greater than 0.5 tons per square foot (tsf). but less than 1.5 tsf.

• Granular cohesion-less soils, e.g., gravel, silt, silt loam, sandy loam

• Type “A” fissured or subject to vibration

• Unstable dry rock• It is part of a sloped, layered

system which dips into the excavation on a slope less steep than 4H:1V, but only if the material would otherwise be classified as Type “B”

Type “C” Soil:• Cohesive/non-cohesive soils with

unconfined compressive strength of 0.5 tsf or less

• Granular soils including gravel, sand, and loamy sand

• Submerged soil or soil from which water is freely seeping

• Submerged rock that is not stable• Sloped, layered system which

slopes into an excavation at an angle of 4H:1V, or steeper

Foam Filler is made of lightweight polystyrene that fills double wall cavities minimizing mud and sand build-up inside of the walls.

Foam Filler Pushing Blocks

A set of four pushing blocks, each made of 1 in. thick steel, are used for pushing the shield to grade. Pushing Blocks are NOT intended for pounding with excavator bucket.

Pulling Lugs

A set of two pulling lugs are welded to the front end of the sidewalls to pull the shield easily along the trench as the job progresses.

Stacking Pockets

Stacked shields are connected using pins placed through welded stacking pockets. Pockets allow for shields of varying sidewall widths to be stacked.

Fast Stak™

Fast Stak™ brackets allow shields to be stacked, and quickly and easily secured. The brackets are attached to the sidewalls or spreaders depending on the chosen design.

Stack Brackets

Stack Brackets are perfect for securing stacked four-sided shields or other configurations where stacking pockets or Fast Stack™ can not be utilized. The brackets are secured on the trench box sidewall’s lifting lugs.

Twist-Lock™ Removable Fifth CollarSpreader Collar Options

A set of four corner brackets (patent pending) allow for the construction of four-sided shields using standard trench shield sidewalls.

Custom designed and constructed shields include the option for job-specific spreader collar placement.

The mud plate offers excellent protection against water, mud, and sand encroachment for workers in the front of the shield. (Refer to mud plate, page 12)

Efficiency’s new Twist-Lock™ Removable Fifth Collar (patent pending) adds increased versatility to trench shields. A fifth spreader pipe can be added to a standard 4-pipe set trench shield whenever a project calls for a 5-pipe application.

Efficiency offers a variety of options for trench shield spreader collars, including extended collars and heavy duty collars. Collar Repair Kits are also available for all collar sizes.

Corner Brackets EC Brackets

End Panel Connector (EC) brackets are a quick and easy way to add three or four-sided protection to any trench shield. EC brackets secure to the adjoining sidewall’s spreader collars.

Shield Grabber™

Shield Grabber™ is designed to be picked up with the hook of an excavator bucket. A guide rail enables the operator to position the lifting bars under the lifting hooks on the shield, easily handling the shield in and out of the trench.

Pipe Puller Material SeparatorHi-Hopper™

Octagon Box

Octagon Boxes offer four-sided protection with a tremendous strength to weight ratio. Octagon Boxes are rated for deep excavations but are lightweight enough to handle with light-duty equipment. (Shown with optional custom color.)

The Pipe Puller is an efficient method of joining large diameter pipe and box culverts. The Pipe Puller remains stationary in the first pipe while a 100 ft. cable is extended and secured to the last pipe, then activated to join the sections. (Refer to Pipe Puller, page 40)

Material Separators are designed to separate large stones and other debris from existing backfill material. Screens are constructed of heavy-duty vertically placed bars and are available in 3, 4, and 6 in. widths. (Refer to Material Separator, page 39)

The Hi-Hopper™ bedding material dispenser is available in Standard or Heavy Duty models up to 4 cu. yd. capacities. Hi-Hoppers™ hold bedding material in the hopper for controlled discharge directly into the excavation. (Refer to Hi-Hopper™, page 39)

Arches

A wide variety of arch assemblies are available for all types of pipe installation such as box culverts or large diameter pipe. Arches are an excellent accessory for boring applications. (Refer to Arches, page 23)

Four-Point Lift SystemAdjustable & Stackable

Every trench shield includes a certification tag which is permanently welded to the trench box sidewall. The certification tag includes the corresponding serial number for the trench shield and lists the shield’s tabulated data including depth ratings.

All structural steel is fully tested and certified to be high strength, providing maximum depth to weight ratios.

Shields are designed to stack on flat edges for deeper excavation projects. A wide variety of spreaders are available ranging in width from 2 ft. to 20 ft., allowing shields to be adjusted for each project.

The four-point lift system is used for lifting disassembled shield sidewalls, as well as the entire assembled shield. Lifting lugs are positioned for balanced lifting and easy handling.

Plug Welding on Double-Wall Shield

Inside skin plates on double-wall shields have the most plug welds in the industry. Plug welds tie the entire structure together and allow the maximum shear stress transfer capacity.

Reinforced Top RailsReinforced Knife Edge

1/2 in. steel bar stock covers the full width of sidewall tops. This feature is standard on all models.

Spreader sets are connected to sidewalls with pins and keepers, making assembly and disassembly quick and easy. No bolts, nuts, or tools needed.

Standard on XLD, HT6, HT8, and PXL shields. Collar pipes are enclosed into three full height vertical tubes and are welded to both the inner and outer skin plates.

Bottom of sidewalls have reinforced edges that are gusseted for strength and beveled to a knife-like edge that helps prevent water infiltration. Shields are also available with flat bottoms.

Thru-Wall Lifting Lugs

Lifting lugs facilitate assembly, disassembly, and handling. The thru-wall design enables chains or cables to be connected from inside, or outside of the shield.

Thru-Wall Collar

Efficiency’s collar tube design offers maximum strength and rigidity. The collar tube extends through the sidewall and is welded to the inside and outside walls, and around the perimeter of the tube.

The design allows maximum pipe and structure clearance with minimum trench width. The Hi-Clearance Arch system is designed for use with most Efficiency trench shields.

What is Slide Rail?Efficiency Production’s Slide Rail is a component system comprised of steel panels and posts. It is commonly used as a cost-effective alternative to traditional driven close-sheeting. The universal system can be used in a variety of configurations to meet any shoring challenge, particularly in poor soil conditions or near adjacent structures.

Standard 4-Sided PitIndividual Slide Rail components offer the option of using lighter equipment when installing the system. The cost of rental and installation of the system is approximately 50 percent of steel sheeting.■ Installation and required excavation are

completed together, saving time and reducing cost.

■ Wall to wall working space is greater.■ Minimal vibration to adjacent buildings

and surrounding structures.

Linear or 4-Sided Multi-BayThis configuration is ideal when installing next to existing utilities and structures. Longer pipe may be installed by raising or removing the parallel beam spreader assembly.■ Innovative parallel beams

eliminate post deflection during installation and removal. The roller design facilitates the vertical movement of the integrated beam and spreader unit.

How is Slide Rail used?Slide Rail is installed simul-taneously as the trench or pit is excavated by sliding the panels into rails on the posts, and then pushing the panels and posts incrementally down to grade as the pit is dug; a process commonly referred to as a “dig and push” system. Slide Rail posts have either a double or triple rail which telescope panels to required depth.

OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926.650-.652 Subpart P-Excavations:OSHA’s excavation standard contains many different requirements as well as several appendices that can be confusing at first glance. The following information summarizes the main requirements in order to help contractors prepare the job site for OSHA inspections. ■ Prior to digging, the contractor shall locate and identify all underground utilities such as sewer, telephone, fuel,

electric, water lines, etc. that may be encountered during the excavation.■ The contractor must designate a competent person or qualified person to assess the excavation and determine that it is

safe for project personnel to enter and work.■ All surface encumbrances such as signs, trees, fences, poles, sidewalks, etc. that create a hazard to employees must be

removed or supported during the excavation.■ All excavating must maintain a minimum of 10 ft. from overhead power lines rated 50 kV or less, with 0.4 in. of

clearance added for every kV over 50.■ Support systems shall be provided to ensure the stability of adjacent structures endangered by excavation operations.■ If excavation is over 5 ft. deep, a protective system such as a trench shield shall be used to prevent a cave-in.■ The contractor must provide a safe means of entering or exiting any excavation over 4 ft. deep.■ A means of egress from a trench such as a ladder, ramp, or stairway shall be located within 25 ft. of workers.■ In excavations over 4 ft. in depth, the potential for the accumulation of hazardous gases or vapors must be realized.■ Shielding systems shall be installed and removed in a manner that protects employees from cave-ins, structural

collapses, or from being struck by any part of the support system.■ Shielding systems shall be installed in a manner to restrict lateral or other hazardous movement of the shield in the

event of a sudden collapse.■ The bottom of the shielding system can not be positioned greater than 2 ft. above the bottom of the excavation.■ Shielding systems and their components shall not be subjected to loads which they are not designed to withstand.■ Shielding systems and their components shall be securely connected to prevent predictable failures.■ The removed spoil shall not be stockpiled closer than 2 ft. from the excavation’s edge.■ Backfilling shall progress together with the removal of support systems from excavations.■ Any excavation left unattended must be barricaded, fenced or otherwise protected against accidental entry by

pedestrians.■ Employees exposed to vehicular traffic must wear a high-visibility vest, and the excavation must be protected from

traffic.■ If employees must cross over an open excavation, a safe means must be provided so that the employees do not have to

jump across the trench.■ No workers shall enter or work in excavations where standing water is visible unless adequate protection is used.■ No employee shall be permitted underneath loads handled by lifting or digging equipment.■ If the competent person finds evidence of a hazardous situation that may result in a cave-in, protective system failure,
