architectural narrative

Summarized in this booklet is the Schematic Design Phase of the design for the remodeled Sawyer Elementary School, serving grades K-5.

This existing 46,575 square foot three section facility will be remodeled and expanded to current district educational specification standards. The proposed expansion is approximately 19,365 square feet. The expansion is made up of four additions. An addition is planned to the west which will include a new gymnasium, art room, music, success rooms, and storage spaces. An addition is planned for the existing west wing which will include a new kindergar-ten room. The addition planned for the existing east wing will add a third grade classroom and second/third grade activity space. An addition is planned to be added to the south of what is now the administrative offices. This addition and renovation of the administrative offices will be the new media center. The planned additions will provide a shared activity area for kinder-garten/first grade, second/third grade, and fourth/fifth grade. The administration office will be placed at the main entry across the corridor from the cafeteria. This will provided visibility to the front of the school as well as a new secured entrance. The kitchen will be expanded and the cafeteria updated with new windows and finishes. New windows will be installed in the far east wing housing the fourth and fifth grade classrooms.

This design overview is organized in terms of: owner review & approval, floor plan organiza-tion & features, primary interior finishes, and exterior design & materials.

Owner Review and Approval of this Design Phase:

The Schematic Design Phase has established a design concept which has been developed in concert with the District Steering Committee and District staff. Approval of the design at this phase covers the site plan layout of key elements (building, parking, circulation, playgrounds, and play areas), floor plan arrangement (size and location of spaces), and exterior design character (general shape and composition of the building and its principal materials). Sub-mitted with this booklet are narratives from the design team which provide descriptions of recommended systems and elements for the building. A project budget and schedule are also included, reflecting the current status of each at this milestone.

The next phase, Design Development, includes detailed development of the design to com-plete and confirm the project design. In this phase, power & technology details are finalized, and interior details are addressed (millwork, finishes/colors).

Although design changes can be made at a later time, such changes could result in schedule, fee, or construction cost impacts.

As we move, with your permission, into the ‘Design Development Phase’, the design will be developed and finalized in continued partnership with the District Steering Committee and District Staff. Our team is committed to bringing the Ames Community School District with an elementary school building that is programmatically and aesthetically efficient. We believe this Schematic Design proposal is a responsible design solution that meets the expectations of program, site, budget, and schedule and can well serve its community for years to come.

landscape architectural

The Sawyer Elementary site is approximately 11.4 acres.

The site design overview consists of a building addition connected to the west and south sides of the existing building, vehicular access, pedestrian access, play spaces and site plantings.

The site design will consist of the elementary school building addition located on the western portion of the site with smaller additions located on the south side of the existing building. Delivery and service access will be provided near the north side of the building.

Vehicular access consists of two drop-offs located on site. The western drop-off will be used for bus drop off. Two new entry drives will be installed along North Dakota Avenue. The north entry drop-off will be used for parent drop-off and is directly adjacent to 25 new parking stalls for visitors and staff. The proposed design will accommodate 75 total parking spaces compared to an existing 67 parking stalls. The parking and drives are proposed to be either new asphalt or an asphalt mill and overlay in locations where existing paving can be repurposed with the new site layout. For schematic design purposes, it can be assumed that 6” depth asphalt over a 6” depth aggregate base will be used for the new asphalt drives and parking lots. Depths will be verified once a geotechnical report is complete.

Pedestrian access will be provided with sidewalks parallel on the east side of the bus drop-off and on the south side of the parent drop-off connecting to walks to the west and north entries of the elementary building. The existing sidewalk from the southeast corner of the site will be preserved for easy access from the residential neighborhood. Sidewalks will also be provided for emergency egress at points throughout the building as needed along the new additions.

Play spaces will remain in the same locations. The hard surface play area will have an asphalt mill and overlay and will be replaced as needed in areas of new building or utility construction. New basketball hoops will be provided as needed to replace old.

The existing 6’ tall chain link fence will be preserved along the south, east and portions of the west sides of the site to separate the play areas from North Dakota Avenue and local residents. 4’ tall, galvanized, chain link fencing will be provided as needed to separate stormwater detention from the play areas.

Site plantings include seed for open green space and trees and shrubs as needed. Native grasses and wildflower seeding is proposed for storm water detention.

Owner will provide and install site benches and trash receptacles.
