C13HlgN204C1 requires c,51.5; H,6.2; N,9.3; C1,11.7; 0C2H5, 14.9; the compound gave with alkaline picrate (Jeffe's test) aminooxy group, and a negative ninhydrin (I) served for the following reactions the orange-red colour specific for the free test). The canalinate carried out on the y-aminooxy group: intermolecularpeptidic selfcondenaation,intramolecularcondensation, peptidic acy- lation by au N-protected amino acid and amidination to the guanidinoxy derivative. E!CHYL N$N%ibenzoyl-DLcanalinate (DLcr-benzamido-Y-benzamido-

oxybutyric acid ethyl ester), prepared by condensation of

benzhydroxemic acid with a-benzamido-Y-halogenobutyric acid .

When ethyl Bgbenzoyl-DL-canalinate was freed from hydro-

gen chloride with potassium acetate and then refluxed in

ethanol for a few hours, a condensation product was obtained,

from which an (average) aminooxy-tripeptide (II) was iso-

lated (m.p. 95-100'; anal. found: C,60.1; H,5.8; N,ll.9;

oc2H5P6*g= c35H42h6010 requires C,59.5; H,5.9; N,11.9;

o(32H5,6.4).

!lhe ethyl Ngbeneoyl-N~[#beneoyl-NE(@beneoyl-DL-oana-

lyl)-DL-canalyl]-DL-canalinate (II) represents a new type

of a peptidic compound, linking the carboxyl group of an

a-amino acid with the aminooxy group of the a-amino acid

canaline, which occurs in nature in the L-form.

On the other hand, condensation of the free ester of I

acaordlng to the high dilution principle leads through intra-

molecular cyclisation to the lactamic N-beneoyl derivative of

DL-canaline (I@benaoyl-DL-homocycloserine); this is indicated

by the specific blue colour test reaction with sodium nitri-

topentacyanoferroate2.

!Che amlnooxy peptldlo linkage was also built up between

the canallnate I and another a-amino acid, e.g. DL-alanlne.

After liberation of I by triethylamlne in methylene chloride,

the free canallnate was condensed with N-beneyloxycarbonyl-

DEalanine by the aid of N,N'-dloyclohexyl oarbodllmlde, re-

sulting in ethyl Ngbensoyl-N~(N-benzyloxycarbonyl-DL-alanyl)-

DEcanallnate (III) (found: N,9.1; OC2H5,9.4. C24H23N307

requires N,9.0; OC2H5,9.7; Jaffe's test - negative).

The Nb-benzoyl-DL-canalinate freed as above from I, was

aIso used for smidination of the amlnooxy group by the aid

of S-methylathlourea sulphate. The DGcanavanine derivative

thus obtained gives the characteristic magenta colour reaction

of the guanidinoxy group of canavanlne, tested with activated

sodium nltroprusslde3.

Syntheses parallel to those above were also carried out

with amlnooxyacetlc acid ethyl ester, prepared by condensa-

tion of bensbydroxamlc acid with ethyl bromoaoetate and re-

moval of the bensoyl rest, in the same manner as for I.
