NBCI continues, year by year, with the daily slog of protecting
Bobwhites.
National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative
Knoxville, TN --(Ammoland.com)- The annual meeting of the National
Bobwhite Technical Committee (NBTC) feels like slugging an energy
drink, or two.
Even for the most determined optimists who are dedicated to restoring
bobwhites and grassland birds against long odds, the daily uphill
conservation slog can feel lonely at times.
A high-energy gathering of more than 100 hardcore, professional
bobwhite conservationists is a sure-fire energizer.
The NBTC meeting in Tallahassee, Florida last week – graciously and
efficiently hosted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission and Tall Timbers Research Station – attracted some 120 of
the nation’s bobwhite leaders for four days of intense strategy
deliberations, technical training and camaraderie. In an era of the most
restrictive agency travel budgets in memory, some 23 state wildlife
agencies, five non-government organizations, and three federal
conservation agencies participated.
Make no mistake, this is no ordinary technical gathering that batters
attendees with endless Powerpoint presentations. Because the NBTC is
the creator and the keeper of, as well as the brains and the fire behind,
the National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI), no other body is
so invested in its ultimate success.
Thus, the NBTC meeting is built for the purpose of advancing
implementation the NBCI. This conference combined the biannual
meeting of the NBTC Steering Committee, a half-day training workshop
for state quail coordinators, two half days of key presentations, two half
days of technical subcommittee breakout sessions, and a daylong field
trip to examine prime quail habitats and management in the nearby Red
Hills region.
A wide diversity of bobwhite professionals comprise the NBTC, including
state quail program coordinators and district biologists; private, state
and university quail researchers; non-government and state private
lands biologists; state and non-government organization administrators;
private, state and federal agriculture policy specialists; grazing
management specialists; foresters; songbird experts; and joint venture
coordinators. The NBTC collates this rich array of expertise into a multi-
tasking national team with a shared vision for restoring widespread
huntable populations of this popular but severely declining game bird.
The NBTC always has prided itself on being a hard-charging group, with
a hard-working annual meeting. Its subcommittees are structured to
address priority bobwhite challenges – agriculture policy, forestry,
grazing lands, prescribed fire, public outreach and research. The
membership divides itself among the subcommittees based on expertise
and interest, to develop priorities, tactics and an agenda of action items
for the coming year. The NBCI’s professional staff round out the NBTC
machine by providing full-time capacity to facilitate implementation of
those agendas.
The horsepower of the NBTC continues, year by year, to
grow and pervade on behalf of the NBCI, even after the
individual members return to the daily slog … but with a
recharged determination.
About:
The National Bobwhite Conservation Initiative (NBCI) is the unified
strategic effort of 25 state fish and wildlife agencies and various
conservation organizations — all under the umbrella of the National
Bobwhite Technical Committee — to restore wild populations of
bobwhite quail in this country to levels comparable to 1980. Visit:

Delaware’s Dove, Resident Canada Goose & Teal Seasons To
Open In September
Hunting opportunities offered at State Fish and Wildlife Areas.
Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife
DOVER, Delaware --(Ammoland.com)- Delaware hunters will be able
to start honing their wing shooting skills on Thursday, Sept. 1 with the
opening of the mourning dove and resident Canada goose seasons.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, hunters can start adding teal to their bag. The
DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife offers many early season hunting
opportunities on its wildlife areas throughout the state.
In some locations, hunting hours may be more restrictive due to other
activities taking place on the wildlife areas.
New Castle County
Dove
In New Castle County, sunflower fields have been planted at the Cedar
Swamp Wildlife Area on the Rocks, Guestford and Bell tracts. The
sunflower field at the Rocks Tract has been relocated this year to
approximately100 yards further down the driveway past the old field.
Hunting spots are chosen by a lottery held at noon at the Cedar Swamp
check station located on Collins Beach Road. Hunting days will be
Thursday, Sept. 1, Labor Day Monday, Sept. 5, and all Saturdays in
September. Hunting hours are 1 to 5 p.m. All other areas of Cedar
Swamp outside of zones 1, 2, 8 and 9 are open daily to dove hunting
according to all state and federal regulations.
The Baxter Tract of the Augustine Wildlife Area has one sunflower field
open throughout dove season with no special permits required. Shooting
hours for this field are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. All other
tracts of the Augustine and C&D Canal Wildlife Areas are open to dove
hunting throughout the season with no special permits required.
Resident Canada Geese
Resident Canada goose hunting will be available on the C&D Canal
Wildlife Area and on and around Reedy Island in the Delaware River. No
special permits are required.
September Teal
Eleven blinds on the Port Penn Tract of the Augustine Wildlife Area will
be open for the early teal season. These blinds are available by permit
only through lottery drawings held at the Augustine check station at the
end of North Congress Street in Port Penn. Lotteries are held on
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday with drawings taking place 1
½ hours before legal shooting time throughout the season.
Kent County
Dove
Kent County state wildlife areas offer several dove hunting opportunities
with both lottery and non-lottery hunts. Lottery permit hunts are
available at the Milford Neck Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Penuel
Tract, the Norman G. Wilder WMA Caulk Tract and the Ted Harvey
WMA Logan Lane and Buckaloo tracts. Permits to hunt the sunflower
fields on these areas are issued through a noon lottery at the Little Creek
check station on Route 9/Bayside Drive just south of Little Creek. These
areas are hunted on opening day, Labor Day and Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Saturdays in September only.
For those not interested in the lottery hunts, dove hunting opportunities
are available at both the Blackiston and Norman G. Wilder wildlife areas
where sunflower fields have been planted. These sites are open all days
of the dove season with hunting hours from one-half hour before sunrise
to sunset.
Resident Canada Geese
Several Kent County wildlife areas have resident Canada goose hunting
opportunities. At the Milford Neck WMA, all of the waterfowl hunting
blind sites will be open on a first come-first served basis. In addition,
Blackiston, Norman G. Wilder (Petersburg and Willow Grove Tracts),
Milford Neck and Little Creek (Davy Crockett Tract) will be open for
September goose hunting with no restriction to blinds or blind sites.
Additionally, at the Woodland Beach and Roberts tract permit-required
blinds, resident goose hunting will be allowed while hunting September
teal.
September Teal
Daily lotteries for blinds will be held at the Woodland Beach WMA for
marsh blinds, blinds on the Taylor’s Gut impoundment and the McKay
Tract. At the Ted Harvey WMA, Roberts Tract and river blinds 32-44 will
be available through a daily lottery at the Little Creek WMA. Lotteries
will be held 1 ½ hours before legal shooting time at the Woodland Beach
Check Station and 2 hours before legal shooting time at the Little Creek
Check Station. Other wildlife areas open for teal hunting include Milford
Neck WMA, and the Little Creek Davey Crockett Tract. All teal hunting

half hour before sunrise to sunset.
Sussex County
Dove
Dove hunting on managed fields will be available on the Assawoman and
Nanticoke wildlife areas. At Assawoman, permits will be issued from the
check station beginning at noon on the first Saturday in September with
hunting hours from 1-6 p.m. Dove fields are located on the Muddy Neck
portion of the Short Tract. Hunting on this area will be on Saturdays only
during the month of September. Hunters will be hunting over sunflowers
in 2011. Dove hunting will be allowed on other unmanaged areas with a
permit.
At the Nanticoke WMA, dove hunting will begin on opening day, Sept. 1.
Corn and sunflowers are planted at the George Adams Field and the Dirt
Pit Fields. No permits or check out are required and there are no limits
on the number of hunters. Dove hunting is allowed on other unmanaged
areas without a permit.
All other wildlife areas in Sussex County are open for dove hunting with
no permits required.
Resident Canada Geese
No resident goose hunts are planned for Sussex County on state wildlife
areas. No resident goose flocks are present on areas accessible for
hunting.
September Teal
Prime Hook State Wildlife Area is open to teal hunting this year. Hunting
days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. State blinds 1-8 will
be open. Permits are free and will be issued on a first come-first served
basis from the tag board on Prime Hook State Wildlife Area at Little
Neck Road. All federal blinds are closed, and no drawings or check out
will occur. No other Sussex County state wildlife areas fall within the
September teal season zones.
General Hunting Information for the 2011-2012 seasons:
September season dates are:
• Doves: Sept. 1-Oct. 1
• Resident Canada Geese: Sept. 1 –24
• Teal: Sept. 10 –28.
Non-toxic shot must be used for all dove hunting on state wildlife areas
during the month of September.
In addition to a Delaware hunting license, teal, dove and goose hunters
will need to have registered with the Federal Harvest Information
Program (HIP) to get a registration number. Hunters can call toll free 1-
855-335-4868 or go to www.dnrec.delaware.gov/delhunt to register for
an HIP number.
If hunting from a blind that was selected through a lottery, all hunters in
the blind are required to have the $20 annual blind permit that can be
purchased where hunting licenses are sold. This permit is waived for
hunters participating in Division of Fish and Wildlife-designated youth
hunting days.
Hunting maps for state wildlife areas are available online at
www.fw.delaware.gov or by calling 302-739-9912.
A legislative change that hunters should be aware of this year is that
businesses licensed to operate as a commercial game preserve may now
operate on Sundays. This change only applies to for-profit businesses
and not to licensed shooting preserves that release game solely for
hunting purposes.
For additional information, hunters should consult the Delaware
Hunting and Trapping Guide and the Delaware Migratory Game Bird
Season Summary. The Division would like to note that Sunday, Oct. 2 is
not a deer hunting day as listed in the print version of the guide. The
Division apologizes for any confusion this error may cause. It has been
corrected in the online version of the Guide that can be viewed at
www.fw.delaware.gov.

New York Takes Aim at KeepingFirearm Companies &Thousands Of Private SectorJobs In StateAUG 22, 2011 01:42P.M.
Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, NYS Rifle & Pistol
Association President Tom King, Take Aim At Keeping
Firearm Companies – And Thousands Of Private Sector Jobs –
In New York State
New York State Rifle and Pistol Association
New York --(Ammoland.com)- Urge Regional Economic Development
Councils to work with companies such as Remington Arms, Just Right
Carbines, Kahr Arms, Kimber Manufacturing, Turnbull Restoration &
Dan Wesson Firearms and support the firearms industry that employs
thousands of New Yorkers
At a time when nearly 760,000 New Yorkers are unemployed, Assembly
Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,I,C-Canandaigua) and New York State
Rifle and Pistol Association (NYSRPA) President Tom King, today said
Governor Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Councils should
make the retention of firearm companies such as Remington Arms; Just
Right Carbines; Kahr Arms; Kimber Manufacturing; Turnbull
Restoration and Dan Wesson Firearms – along with the thousands of
private sector jobs they provide – a top economic development priority
for the Empire State.
Leader Kolb and President King also urged the rejection of government
mandates such as micro-stamping, which drive up the cost of firearms,
hurt the economic competitiveness of New York’s gun industry and could
lead to firearm manufacturers leaving the state altogether.
Pointing to a recent New York Times story “States Pitch a Lifestyle to
Lure Gun Makers From Their Longtime Homes,” Leader Kolb said the
Councils should recognize aggressive steps taken by other states to steal
away firearm companies and work to retain the thousands of private
sector jobs in New York that are involved with the manufacture and sale
of firearms.
Leader Kolb and President King asked the Councils to work closely with
firearm companies such as Remington Arms (Ilion); Just Right Carbines
(Canandaigua); Kahr Arms and Kimber Manufacturing (Yonkers);
Turnbull Restoration (Bloomfield); and Dan Wesson Firearms (Norwich)
to make the sector more competitive by bringing the Empire State’s
labor, energy and transportation costs in line with those of other states.
“Thousands of New Yorkers are presently employed in some
form or fashion by the firearms industry. More than ever, we
have to fight to keep these jobs as states such as Idaho,
Alabama, and Montana are aggressively trying to lure away
New York’s firearm industries. Losing these private sector
jobs would be a devastating hit to our already fragile
economy,” said Leader Kolb, the only Legislative Leader in

state government who has started and run successful private
sector manufacturing businesses.
“We need to make sure that job creating companies such as
Remington Arms, Just Right Carbines, Kahr Arms, Kimber
Manufacturing, Turnbull Restoration and Dan Wesson
Firearms stay right here in the Empire State. With New York
facing fierce competition from 49 other states trying to lure
our businesses and jobs away, listening to, and working with,
private sector job creators such as these should be a top
priority for the Councils,” Leader Kolb said.
Besides tax breaks and other financial incentives states are using to
entice firearm companies to relocate, the New York Times also cited the
impact of government mandates such as micro-stamping as a leading
factor why some businesses may possibly leave New York State (and
Connecticut), relocating to areas without micro-stamping requirements.
The New York Times article stated the following: “Gun manufacturers
say proposed micro-stamping laws could drive Colt out of Connecticut
and Remington out of New York, which are among more than half a
dozen states where the legislation has been introduced. California,
which employs more firearms industry workers than any other state,
has already approved a micro-stamping law that is pending. Carlton S.
Chen, a vice president at Colt, said the company would have few
qualms about leaving Connecticut if micro-stamping became law.”
“Having the Regional Economic Development Councils listen
to the needs of the firearms industry in New York would mark
a good start to a much-needed partnership. Next, the state
Legislature needs to do its part and stop considering costly
government mandates, such as micro-stamping, that do little
to keep New Yorkers safe, yet drive up the cost of owning a
firearm and create a climate where companies that produce
them no longer feel welcome. In this tough economy, we have
to do whatever it takes to keep quality employers like
Remington Arms, Just Right Carbines, Kahr Arms, Kimber
Manufacturing, Turnbull Restoration and Dan Wesson
Firearms part of the Empire State,” Leader Kolb stated.
“NYSRPA has long recognized the economic impact of ill-
conceived legislation that seeks to diminish our constitutional
freedoms. The NYSRPA is proud to partner with a Legislative
Leader like Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, a former
private sector businessman who understands that our
heritage industries need legislative protection, not
harassment, which is one of the reasons Leader Kolb was our
legislator of the year for 2010,” said Tom King, President of
the NYSRPA.
“There are more than 10,000 New Yorkers employed in the
firearms manufacturing, and related industries. We need to
retain these jobs here in New York not drive them elsewhere
through poorly conceived legislation,” President King stated.

10 Ways to Protect America’sHunting HeritageAUG 22, 2011 01:33P.M.
10 Ways to Protect America’s Hunting Heritage
Protect America’s Hunting Heritage
Boone and Crockett Club
MISSOULA, Mont.--(Ammoland.com)- Surveys show that three of
every four Americans approve of legal hunting, and support is trending
upwards.
As long as the majority of citizens continue to see this sporting tradition
as fair, safe and meaningful, hunting will remain a privilege of
citizenship–as well as a boon to conservation.
*123456* Lineitem #123456, tabblo #1, page 7 (7 of 20), generated 2011-08-23 02:43:40.925112 on g1t0307, dpi=225

For hunters headed afield this fall, the Boone and Crockett Club offers 10
ways to help keep the public on our side.
“Modern society has high expectations of hunters,” said Ben
Wallace, president of the Club.
“In a changing culture with ever more scrutiny of all things
related to the environment, our behavior toward animals, the
land, firearms and even each other is more important today
than anytime in our history.”
Keep alive the Hunting Heritage passed down from generations passed.
Here’s how to do your part:
1. Hunting is allowed today because the vast majority of hunters
through the ages have respectfully followed laws, regulations,
safety rules and high ethical standards known as fair chase–the
sporting pursuit and taking of native free-ranging game species in a
manner that does not give the hunter improper advantage.
Continue the tradition.
2. Remember: Any animal taken in fair chase is a trophy.
3. America’s system of conservation and wildlife management is the
most successful ever developed. It works only because of funding
from hunters. Spread the word.
4. Respect the customs of the local area where you’re hunting,
including the beliefs and values of those who do not hunt.
5. This season, make every attempt to take a youngster hunting. If
you already hunt with your son or daughter, invite one of their
friends to come along.
6. Technology is a wonderful thing until it replaces the skills
necessary to be a complete hunter. If it seems gratuitous, leave it at
home.
7. Always ask permission before hunting private land. Respect
landowners.
8. Tread lightly, especially on public land. ATVs have their place–on
roads and trails. If you pack it in, pack it out.
9. Sportsmen have always been instrumental in managing big game
herds. If antlerless harvest is encouraged in your area and you have
the opportunity, take a doe or cow.
10.Remember: The reason for a hunt is intrinsically about the
experience. A kill is a justifiable outcome but not the only
definition of a successful hunt.
Theodore Roosevelt founded the Boone and Crockett Club in 1887 to
help uphold sporting values and promote science-based conservation
and wildlife management.
Surveys by research firm Responsive Management showed that 73
percent of Americans approved of hunting in 1995. Support had grown to
75 percent by 2003, and to 78 percent by 2006.
About the Boone and Crockett Club
Founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887, the Boone and Crockett Club
promotes guardianship and visionary management of big game and
associated wildlife in North America. The Club maintains the highest
standards of fair-chase sportsmanship and habitat stewardship. Member
accomplishments include enlarging and protecting Yellowstone and
establishing Glacier and Denali national parks, founding the U.S. Forest
Service, National Park Service and National Wildlife Refuge System,
fostering the Pittman-Robertson and Lacey Acts, creating the Federal
Duck Stamp program, and developing the cornerstones of modern game
laws. The Boone and Crockett Club is headquartered in Missoula, Mont.

D.C. v Heller and McDonald v Chicago Need Supreme Court
Clarification

Is it legal for me to clean my guns on my open front porch or in a

FirearmsTruth.com
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- D.C. v Heller and McDonald v Chicago
were decided in favor of gun rights three and two years ago respectively.
Those of us who cherish our 2nd Amendment Rights were jubilant that
finally the Supreme Court cleared up the issue in our favor. But as
FirearmsTruth reported back then, not all issues were clearly defined by
The Court.
Some jurisdictions, like the city of Chicago, disregarded the spirit of the
McDonald holding and put as many bureaucratic obstacles against gun
ownership as they could. Since Heller was decided three years ago, there
have been over 400 legal challenges to constitutionally protected
firearms possession. Most of these lower court rulings have been in favor
of gun control.
Heller and McDonald make clear that a law abiding citizen has the right
to own a firearm for home self-protection. But does this right extend
beyond the inside of the home, and if so, how far?
For example, is it legal for me to clean my handgun on my open front
porch or in a detached garage? If I am traveling to a shooting range by
car how must my firearm be secured? Can it be loaded? What about
travel by foot?
Lower federal and state courts have overwhelmingly ruled in favor of
local or state restrictions.
Maryland’s highest state court was quite blunt in one of its decisions in
favor of gun control: “If the Supreme Court … means its holdings to
extend beyond home possession, it will need to say so more plainly.”
In the Maryland case, Charles Williams Jr. was convicted for
transporting a firearm in public without a permit. He put the gun in a
bag before traveling from his girlfriend’s house to his own. William’s
attorney, Stephan Halbrook, argues that the Maryland law requiring a
travel permit is unconstitutional because “basically ordinary people
can’t get one.”
I want to know how you are supposed to get your firearm
home from the store in Maryland. Do the police deliver and
how much should you tip them?
Some of the restrictive ruling by lower courts will be appealed to the
Supreme Court. Hopefully The Court will hear one or more of these and
give clear guidelines on how restrictive gun control laws can be when it
comes to the 2nd Amendment outside the home.

Georgia Dove Season OpensSaturday, September 3 2011AUG 22, 2011 12:34P.M.
Georgia Dove Season Opens Saturday, September 3 2011
Wildlife Management Areas offer prime hunting opportunities.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Hunters statewide can
celebrate the beginning of dove season at noon Saturday, Sept. 3.
Long-awaited opening day is traditionally considered the beginning of
the fall hunting season, and with the numerous wildlife management
area hunts scheduled, it is the perfect opportunity to introduce children
and grandchildren to the sport.
“Georgia has some fantastic public areas for dove hunters. In
fact, many WMAs provide fields managed specifically for
dove hunting opportunities,” says John W. Bowers, Wildlife
Resources Division’s assistant chief of Game Management.
“In addition to being the ‘kick-off’ to the fall hunting season,
dove hunting is a prime time to introduce family and friends
to hunting, as it typically is a fun-filled day.”
Most WMA public dove fields are quota only on opening day. As such,
hunters are encouraged to review dove hunting rules and regulations to
ensure the availability of the field they plan to visit.
The official 2011-2012 dove seasons are Sept. 3-18, Oct. 8-16 and Nov. 24
– Jan. 7. Shooting hours are noon until sunset on opening day (Sept. 3)
of the first season and one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for the
remaining two seasons. Sunrise and sunset times for each day are found
in the 2011-2012 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations guide or
online at www.georgiawildlife.com .
The daily bag limit is 15 doves per hunter. Additionally, there have been
some reports of white-winged doves in Georgia. White-winged doves
may be harvested, but count toward the daily bag limit of 15.
Any autoloading or other repeating shotgun must be plugged to hold no
more than three shotshells while hunting doves. As always, hunters must
obtain permission from landowners before hunting on private property

and please respect the land by cleaning up spent shells, leaving gates the
way they were found and removing all trash.
Dove hunters 16 years of age and older must possess a Georgia hunting
license and a free Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program Permit
(HIP Permit). Those hunting WMAs also must possess a WMA license.
Hunters may purchase licenses online at www.georgiawildlife.com , by
phone at 1-800-366-2661 or at more than 800 license agent locations
(list of agents available online).
For more information on dove hunting rules and regulations, public dove
fields and conditions, or adult/child dove hunts, hunters should review
the 2011-2012 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations guide, available
at www.gohuntgeorgia.com or at any Wildlife Resources Division Game
Management office.
Updated and accurate harvest rate estimates facilitate the successful
management of doves. As such, the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological
Research Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in cooperation
with several states, including Georgia, initiated a dove trapping and
banding project in 2003. Hunters can participate in this conservation
effort by examining harvested doves for bands and reporting band
numbers to the USFWS by calling 1-800-327-BAND.

HSUS Sets Sights on Co-OptingReligionsAUG 22, 2011 12:12P.M.
HSUS Sets Sights on Co-Opting Religions
HSUS Sets Sights on Co-Opting Religions
U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance
Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- It seems that the most dangerous
and well-funded group within the animal rights lobby, the Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) is again trying to reposition itself to
seem mainstream.
That transformation is a new “Faith Outreach” effort. Yes, HSUS is
attempting to align itself with religions.
This path closely follows the animal rights group’s programs that have
thrust its tentacles into school systems and young student minds around
the nation. Churches should definitely beware.
The programs championed by HSUS outreach efforts include articles
promoting a connection between animal rights and the congregations of
the Unitarian Universalists and the United Church of Christ. And the
HSUS furthers the connecting efforts by pushing pro-animal-rights
statements attributed to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,
The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, the Seventh Day Adventist
Church, the Episcopal Church and others religious affiliations.
Seems nearly any sermon can be twisted as promoting
animal rights.
These twists could have been far from the intent of the speaker or
presenter when the materials were spoken or presented. This doesn’t
matter to HSUS.
Real eyebrows are raised, however, when you discover the HSUS’s St.
Francis Day in a Box project.
A $15 toolkit promoting the animal rights philosophy includes: the
Chronicles of Narnia; Animal Protection Ministries: A Guide for
Churches; Eating Mercifully; the CAFO Reader: The Tragedy of
Industrial Animal Factories (a stab at farming); and many others. These
animal rights agenda packets are sold to churches, or congregation
members, to raise funds for HSUS.
While this propaganda intertwines religion and animal rights as
connected crusading causes, there is an obvious lack of religious
tolerance in the missing mention of St. Hubertus, the patron Saint of
Hunters. And of course the “toolkit” includes envelopes and instructions
on how to collect funds in the names of pets, animals and wildlife, and
then send those funds directly to HSUS.

Washington Fish And Wildlife Commission Amends Cougar
Hunting Regulations
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife
OLYMPIA, Washington --(Ammoland.com)- The Washington Fish
and Wildlife Commission approved amendments to cougar hunting
regulations during a conference call today.
The commission, which sets policy for the Washington Department of
Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), amended cougar hunting regulations in six
counties in eastern Washington, where a pilot project authorizing cougar
hunting with the aid of dogs was not extended by the Legislature this
year.
That amendment increases cougar hunting opportunities without the aid
of dogs in Klickitat, Chelan, Okanogan, Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille
counties to continue to meet management objectives in those areas.
In addition, the commission modified the criteria for determining when
cougars are removed to address public concerns about pet and livestock
depredation and personal safety. The change allows for cougar removals
when complaints confirmed by WDFW staff in a given game
management unit exceed the five-year average.
WDFW game managers recommended the amendments to cougar
hunting regulations as an interim measure until the 2012-14 hunting
season package is developed. Public discussion of the 2012-14 hunting
seasons is scheduled to begin this month. More information on those
public meetings is available at
http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/release.php?id=aug1511a .

Jessie Harrison Claims Three Titles at the Steel Challenge
AmmoLand Gun News
Piru, CA --(Ammoland.com)- Professional shooter Jessie Harrison
(formerly Jessie Abbate) won the Lady’s Steel Master title at the World
Speed Shooting Championships in Piru, California this past weekend.
Harrison won the Lady’s Open Rimfire, the Lady’s Limited, and the
Lady’s Open on her way to the Steel Master title. The Steel Master title is
calculated using an aggregate of the Rimfire, Limited, and Open events.
Shooting an exacting match, from the first day to the last, Harrison took
charge from the start with a win at the Rimfire match – in a total time of
76.70. The next day, Harrison’s total time of 109.68 won the Limited
match. She finished the “hat trick” with a win and a total time of 95.60 in
the Open Match. By virtue of her total aggregate time, Harrison defended
her 2010 Lady Steel Master title.

Jessie Harrison
This was the second time, in the history of the event, that a competitor
won all three divisions (Rimfire, Limited, and Open) at the Steel
Challenge. Harrison won all three events in 2009 and, in 2011, did the
same. Harrison also broke the existing record (Lady’s) for “Smoke and
Hope” – giving her six of the eight stage records at the match. Harrison
lowered the record time, on Smoke and Hope, from 9.56 to 9.38. And,
Harrison lowered her best overall time at the Rimfire event and set a new
record.
After a year filled with many personal changes in her life, Harrison
reflected on the 2011 shooting season and her future.
“This 2011 match was a real fun experience for me, “said
Harrison. “I remember shooting here in 2010. Although I
shot well, I was not having fun. A year later, I am having fun
– and I am being successful. They say that if you love your
work, you’ll never work a day in your life. And I love my
work.”
Harrison’s 2011 shooting year has been spectacular with titles at the
Steel Nationals, Bianchi Cup, the ProAm, and at the Steel Challenge.
The 2011 Steel Challenge has been held in Piru, California since the
inception of the match. However, the 2011 match was the end of an era.
Next year, the match is going to Florida. Without much fanfare, the Steel
Challenge, also known as the World Speed Shooting Championships,
ended its run at the Southern California site.
Harrison wraps up the season next month with several major
championships. First, she heads to Las Vegas for the USPSA Nationals.
At the conclusion of that match, Harrison heads to the island of Rhodes
(the island in Greece) in order to compete at IPSC World Shoot XVI.
Harrison’s career shooting resume includes (unless noted, all
championships are Women’s titles) World Speed Shooting
Championships (Steel Challenge) in 2007, 2008 (Ladies Limited only),
2009 and Limited and Steel Master titles in 2010. USPSA Production

ATF Rewards Agents Who RanFast and FuriousAUG 22, 2011 10:52A.M.
ATF Rewards Agents Who Ran “Fast and Furious” & Then
Helped Cover It Up
National Rifle Association
FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- In what can only be described as
“Washington D.C. logic,” the three BATFE agents who were responsible
for the “Fast and Furious” debacle in Phoenix have been promoted.
You read that right, promoted! Not reprimanded, not demoted and
certainly not fired, but given bigger jobs with more responsibility and
more pay.
Each of the agents now have high profile positions in D.C.
William Newell is now special assistant to the assistant director of the
agency’s Office of Management, David Voth has been made branch chief
for the BATFE’s tobacco division.
And if those two promotions seem hard to understand, the third is
particularly hard to fathom. William G. McMahon, who had been the
BATFE’s deputy director of operations in the West, has been made the
deputy assistant director of the Office of Professional Responsibility and
Security Operations. That is the division within BATFE that investigates
misconduct by agency personnel.
Now, McMahon will be called on to investigate BATFE agents who abuse
their positions. Perhaps in “Washington D.C. logic” it makes sense to put
a rogue agent in charge of investigating other rogue agents. To the rest of
the country, it makes no sense at all.
For months, the Department of Justice and the BATFE have stonewalled
congressional inquiries into “Fast and Furious.” These three agents were
not only at the center of running the failed operation in Phoenix, but
directly aided DOJ in the efforts to hide the truth from Congress.
In testimony before Rep. Darrell Issa’s House Oversight Committee, all
three evaded and dodged questions. This appears to be exactly what
senior DOJ officials wanted and expected, and now they have rewarded
the agents with promotions.
NRA has called for the resignation of attorney General Eric Holder. But
all those involved in “Fast and Furious” should be fired.
To promote them instead is a slap in the face of Congress
and the American people.

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- I need a few computer geeks
(hope Skeff can pitch in again) with server-side experience (likely LAMP
stacks, but I’m open to alternatives).
The goal is to implement a content management system to make Gun
Facts easier to team-edit, translate and publish.
My brief investigations into content management technology shows that
some systems allow for the creation of “books” (basically a collection of
web pages), dumping them to a single file, tracking changes, syncing
changes between mirrored pages in different languages, etc.
So I’m looking for several volunteers to be on a team to help:
1) Define and document requirements;
2) Search the open source market for alternatives;
3) Evaluate and select the tool;
4) Implement and test.
If you are ready to help take Gun Facts to the next phase (namely
exporting gun rights around the world) then email me
([email protected]) to volunteer. The preliminary requirements for the
solution set are below.
Yours in Liberty
Guy Smith

National Archery in the Schools Program Announces 2011-12
School Equipment Grants Program
By: Roy Grimes, President NASP
National Archery in the Schools Program
USA --(Ammoland.com)- The Easton Foundations (EF) have again
partnered with the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) to
provide $300,000 in grant assistance for schools to enroll in this
exciting program.
Over the next few months, each of the 47 NASP states, 5 Provinces, and
Washington DC will be allocated $6,000.
Last school year was the first time NASP and EF partnered to provide
these equipment grants.
While the grants were intended to assist 300 schools, 517 new NASP
schools actually received grants.
Once educators at a prospect school learn about NASP, the next biggest
obstacle to bringing archery instruction to their students is the purchase
of the archery equipment kit. Thanks to very cooperative pricing by
NASP suppliers, the equipment kit costs a school far less than its retail
value. Even so, it costs about $3,000 to outfit a typical Physical
Education archery class of 24-36 students. NASP’s equipment
specifications are highly standardized in every school world-wide. Each
school uses the same bow and arrow. The Genesis by Mathews Archery is
a high quality universal-fit compound bow designed for sharing among
several student archers. The Genesis arrow was specifically designed by
Easton Technical Products to be safe, durable, and effective for the

archery student.
This principle of every student using the same equipment in archery
class makes certain the focus of student learning is on mastering the
process of safe and proper shooting. If different types of equipment were
used the teacher’s role would be more complicated, NASP®’s perfect
safety record could be impacted, and the student’s mastery of how to
shoot could be short-circuited.
Most of the more than 8,800 schools that have joined the program to
date have been able to purchase their equipment with little help from
outside sources. However, many schools are unable to raise this money
without assistance. Some schools raise money locally among civic
organizations, conservation clubs or chapters of the National Wild
Turkey Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, or Safari Club
International. Innovative teachers enlist the aid of parents to hold fund
raising events to raise money for equipment. In many NASP jurisdictions
the fish and wildlife conservation agency provides grants for the
purchase of school archery equipment kit.
To help alleviate financial barriers we at NASP are excited about the
generosity of the Easton Foundations (EF). EF is a non-profit foundation
established by James L. Easton for the purpose of training and
developing a pool of world class archers able to compete at the highest
levels. The strategy used to accomplish the Foundation’s purpose is the
creation or support of programs to develop archers at many levels in
order to strengthen and deepen the available talent pool. “The Easton
Foundations have supported NASP Schools for a number of years with
equipment grants directly to the schools, support of the NASP School
Equipment Grant Program allows us to assist more schools and leverage
the great work of the NASP organization and State Coordinators”,
commented Greg Easton from the Easton Foundations. For more about
the Easton Foundations visit www.eastonfoundations.org
This grant offer is popular with coordinators who run NASP in their
respective states.
Tim Beck, the Indiana DNR NASP Coordinator reports,
“These equipment grants have allowed many Indiana schools
to join and participate in this unique and engaging program.
There is no doubt, without this type of boost some of our
students would not be able to join the fun.” Florida Fish &
Wildlife Commission’s Steve Robbins tells us, “Our agency
provides a limited number of grants to start new NASP
schools. These EF and NASP grants help even more private
and public schools join Florida’s NASP effort. We have
teachers waiting and hoping the grant will be renewed this
year.”
The National Archery in the Schools Program is in its 10th year. If you
would like to learn more about NASP and how to help our nonprofit
foundation bring the program to more students please check us out at:

Economy & ATF Scandal Two Sides of the Same Coin
Gun Rights Policies with John Snyder
Arlington, VA - “The economic problems and the government firearm
scandal are two sides of the same coin,” says gun rights expert John M.
Snyder.
Snyder is the Gun Dean, according to Human Events.
“That coin,” continued Snyder “is the belief in the efficacy of big
government. To a large degree, the economic difficulties facing the
country have resulted from the attempt of big government to manage the
economy, in effect to stop the economy from functioning as it properly
should.
“The gun scandal perpetrated by the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives of the United States
Department of Justice through Project Gunrunner and
Operation Fast and Furious results from belief in the ability
of government programs and government operators to bring
about good results from illegal behavior. The result of
government involvement in illegal cross-border firearm
purchases has been the use of firearms in felonious activity in
Mexico and the United States, including murder, even the
murder of American law enforcement agents.”
Snyder said that, “Big government is the antithesis of common sense as
well as of individual freedom. It’s got to be taken down. The American
people will have a good chance to begin taking it down in 15 months with
elections for President, the United States Senate, and the United States

Funding Available to Establish, Maintain Quality Grasslands
for Wildlife
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Department of Natural Resources
wants to remind landowners in the Saginaw Bay and River Raisin basins
that federal funds are available through the U.S. Department of
Agriculture to establish, improve and maintain quality grasslands for
wildlife.
The $100,000 fund is available through matching grants.
“The timing of this announcement couldn’t be better as we
embark on our pheasant restoration initiative,” said DNR
Private Lands Coordinator Mark Sargent. “This money is
available in all three of our priority areas and should help
landowners turn idle or degraded land into quality upland
wildlife habitat.”
Landowners who are interested in improving their grassland habitat
should contact their local USDA Service Center.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the
conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s
natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For
