Dear Parents,

Stagg High School offers many opportunities to assist and guide students as they planfor their post-secondary experiences. An important part of that process is providingstudents the opportunity to explore career and college options. Our guidance department provides a wonderful opportunity for students to experience both. Stagg High School will continue its college/career visitation program during secondsemester. The following college and career visits are offered to students during theschool day. Students will tour the following campuses and explore the educationopportunities and associated career opportunities. Please contact the Stagg Guidance Department for more information.

● Lewis University – Nursing Careers – March 11th ● University of Illinois at Chicago – General Interest – March 18th ● Illinois Institute of Technology – Engineering Careers – April 8th ● Northern Illinois University – General Interest – April 15th

Stagg High School’s Relay for Life Committee asked that we share the followingmessage with our community:

Every year District 230 supports the American Cancer Society by

holding a Relay for Life event. This event is a life-changing expe-

rience that gives everyone in our D230 community a chance to

celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember

loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay,

teams of students take turns walking or running around a track or

path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at

all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, relays

are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

What makes our Relay for Life event unique is that District 230

had the first all youth Relay event 17 years ago. Also, our event

is one of the biggest youth events in the nation! For students, the

Relay for Life of District 230 brings together 1/3 of our entire

school district, over 3,000 students, for the largest high school

celebration of its kind. We also have reached a lifetime goal of

over $3,000,000. An amount many colleges, universities, and

communities will never meet. This is something to be proud of

because it comments on the dedication and generosity our

students possess. This is why we feel it is important to inform

parents of the District and help them encourage their children to

join this wonderful event. This year’s event is set for May 9th to

the morning of the 10th.

Our efforts raise the money to fund the research that SAVES LIVES. In our lifetime, we will see the cure for cancer. Not because we wished for it, but because we workedfor it. The Relay for Life of District 230 offers your children the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Please consider supporting Relay for Life.

March is Music in Our Schools MonthWhy Music? Thanks to the Music Achievement Councilas we celebrate March as Music in Our Schools Month.

I. Music is a ScienceIt is exact, specific, and it demands exactacoustics. A conductor's full score is achart, a graph that indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody, andharmony all at once and with the mostexact control of time.

II. Music is MathematicalIt is rhythmically based on the subdivi-sions of time into fractions, which mustbe done instantaneously, not worked outon paper.

III. Music is a Foreign LanguageMost of the terms are in Italian, German,or French; and the notation is certainlynot English - but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols torepresent ideas. The semantics of musicis the most complete and universal language.

IV. Music is HistoryMusic usually reflects the environmentand times of its creation, often even thecountry and/or racial feeling.

V. Music is Physical EducationIt requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek, andfacial muscles in addition to extraordi-nary control of the diaphragmatic, back, stomach, and chest muscles, whichrespond instantly to the sound the earhears and the mind interprets.

VI. Music Develops Insight andDemands Research

VII. Music is all these things, but mostof all, Music is ArtIt allows a human being to take all these, dry, technically boring (but difficult) techniques and use them to create emotion. That is one thing science cannot duplicate; humanism, feeling, emotion, call it what you will.

That is why we teach music.

Not because we expect you to major in music,

Not because we expect you to play orsing all your life...

But so you will be human,

So you will recognize beauty,

So you will be closer to an infinitebeyond this world,

So you will have something to cling to,

So you will havemore love, morecompassion, moregentleness, moregood - in short, more Life.

LearningNomination Form

Most adults will remember four time Olympic speed skater Bonnie Blair. She is the most decorated female Winter Olympic athlete with five goldmedals and one bronze. She competed in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and1994 Winter Olympics. Many Stagg students were lucky enough to notonly meet her but hear her inspiring story. Mrs. Cruikshank, she marriedspeed skater, Dan Cruikshank, paid Stagg a visit on January, 17, justweeks before she left for the Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Mrs. Cruikshankis the aunt of Stagg junior, Amanda Collins. Amanda and her AP U.S. his-tory teacher, Jennifer Baniewicz, worked with Bonnie to arrange a day thatshe could meet with students and talk about her Olympic achievements.

Students from the social studies and physical education classes as well as various athletes were invited to hear the presentation “Achieving yourPersonal Best”. Bonnie explained her love of the sport started at a veryyoung age, she was skating before she was two and this passion pushedher to achieve her personal best. She explained that one’s personal bestwill not always win gold medals. Her goal in breaking the American recordfor the 1,000 meters was achieved with a time of 1:18.05 minutes, but thisvictory did not bring Olympic gold, but that it was no less satisfying. Sheexplained that one will achieve a personal best in anything when the person is dedicated, finds balance in their life and is willing to take risks.

Bonnie even brought her speed skates, a speed skating suit and one ofher gold medals. Her advice was well received by students and faculty.Bonnie leaves for Russia in early February and will be a member of thePresidential Committee for the closing ceremonies for the Sochi Olympics.

Optional bus transportation from StaggHigh School to the University of Chicago will be availablefor $5 per person.

You may be wondering, why is Stagg’s 50th anniversarycelebration being held at Bartlett Hall at the University of Chicago? Our school namesake, Amos Alonzo Stagg, served as Associate Professor and Director of Athletics atthe University of Chicago from 1892 to 1932. Mr. Stagg’soffice was housed in Bartlett Hall. Bartlett Hall is known

for its Gothic architecture, similar to that of TrinityCollege, Cambridge. In its prime, Bartlett Hall was agymnasium with a running track. Amos Alonzo Stagg andhis football program took up residence in the powerfulsteel framing and limestone walls of this magnificentbuilding. During renovation, this building retained muchof its majesty, including a sign with an arrow directing visitors to the “Football Office” where one of the UnitedStates great college football programs was managed byAmos Alonzo Stagg. Stagg High School acquired one relicfrom Bartlett Hall, the door to Mr. Stagg’s office. Thisdoor now frames the entrance to our school’s Stagg Room, which is located near the N1 entrance.

Attention IncomingFreshmen: Health packets were distributed on February1, 2014 during Freshmen Registration. If you were not at Freshmen Registration, thepacket was mailed to you. Please call theNurse’s Office at 708-974-7426, if you havenot received a packet.

We strongly encourage you to make yourappointment for the required physical assoon as possible. This will help you schedule an early appointment with yourphysician or clinic and avoid delay at schedule pick up in August.

Physical forms with updated immunizationsand the pink emergency forms are due to the nurse’s office by June 1, 2014.

A Few Reminders There are times when students are sick during the school day and are in contact with their parents via cell phone makingarrangements to go home. The problem arises when the Nurse’s Office is not awarethat arrangements are in place between theparent and student for them to go home. Theschool policy states “a student who becomesill during the school day should report to theNurse’s Office”. If your child texts you or

calls you, please make sure that they reportto the Nurse’s Office immediately. The Nursecan evaluate them and expedite their releaseto you when you arrive.

Our primary concern is the health and safetyof our students here at Stagg High School. When a parent arrives at the school and thechild is not in the Nurse’s Office and the Nurseis not aware that the child is ill, there will be adelay before your child is released to you.

Parents, or their designee, need to come insidethe North (N1) Door and check in with the frontdesk. At that time, students will be sent up tothe North Door from the Nurse’s Office.

Health Services Department

Freshman, Albraa Sayed, received a Kindle Fire for reading themost words that helped his class win a Read 180 competitionorganized by Chris Wendelin, his English teacher.

Since early September, students in Mr. Wendelin's Read 180classes competed to see which class could read one million words first. The contest motivated students to take better ownership of the inde-pendent reading component of the program.

Students selected books within their lexile reading range and thenhad to score higher than a 75% on a comprehension quiz over theentire book. Once the students achieved at least a 75% on thequiz, the word count for the book was added to the class total.

Mr. Wendelin added an equalizing rule within the contest thatrequired that all students in each class had to reach at least50,000 words read in order for the class to win. In that way, heassured balance of workload toward the goal of one million words.Students realized that they needed to encourage each other, holdeach other accountable, and stay focused.

Abraa Sayed read over 250,000 words! Students in Mr.Wendelin's classes showed a real "Can Do" attitude and demon-strated how each individual can contribute to the whole's achieve-ment.

While juniors take the PSAE, freshmen and sophomores will take the PLAN andPractice ACT tests respectively. Bus and time schedules for each testing day will bemailed prior to the testing days. Attendance information for both days is as follows:

GRADE LEVEL WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23RD THURSDAY, APRIL 24TH

Freshmen Not in Attendance Plan Testing

Sophomores Practice ACT Exam Not in Attendance

Juniors ACT Portion of PSAE PSAE Work Keys

Seniors Not in Attendance* Not in Attendance*

* Seniors who are still in need of the PSAE graduation requirement must be in attendance for testing both days.

ACT National administrations of the ACT are offered on several Saturdays throughout eachschool year. Upcoming dates include the April 12th and June 14th tests. Students canregister for these tests at www.actstudent.org and should sign up at least five weeksprior to the test date to avoid late fees.

SATUpcoming test dates for the SAT include March 8th, May 3rd and June 7th. SAT testing does not take place at Stagg. Students can register for these tests atwww.collegeboard.com.

Important Testing ConsiderationsAll students are required to take the PSAE (Prairie State Achievement Exam) as a condition of receiving a high school diploma. Seniors who need to test on these dayswill be notified in a letter that will be sent home.

Test results for juniors will be applicable toward college admission and the PSAE scoreswill appear on their transcripts, as will all ACT scores students report to Stagg. As partof registering for the ACT, students should enter Stagg’s testing code (143357) so their

scores are reported here and appear on their transcript. Test results for freshmenand sophomores will be used to assist students and parents in academic andcareer planning.

Juniors taking the ACT should be aware that each time they take this exam, they will be given the opportunity to report their scores for free directly to

colleges they are interested in. Reporting ACT scores can save moneyand time in the college admissions process – many colleges are requiring scores to be sent from the ACT testing company and ACTcharges students for each score sent at a later time.

What’s the difference between the ACT and the SAT? The ACT is takenby students throughout the Midwest and is accepted at colleges across

the country. Juniors should take this test during the spring and seniorsshould utilize the early fall test dates to improve their scores, if necessary.Students considering Ivy League schools or schools on the east or westcoasts should also consider taking the SAT.

Bus and time schedules for each testing day will be mailed prior to thetesting days.
