AMOSS AND CARLISLE A WINNING TEAM

Tom Amoss has been a high-percentage, highly consistent

trainer for more than three decades, but his name has never

been more in the spotlight than it has been this year after a

breakthrough win in the GI Kentucky Oaks with Serengeti

Empress (Alternation). Amoss says his methods of training

haven=t changed, but a few other things have, including a

concentration on buying at sales and adding former hotwalker-

turned-bloodstock agent Lauren Carlisle to his buying team.

Amoss did not grow up in a racing family, so he started at the

bottom and worked his way up the hard way. Now he not only

develops young horses, but he also strives to develop young

horsemen and horsewomen.

AThere were people there that helped me along the way and I

feel responsibility to do the same for this younger generation,@

said Amoss. ASo working with Lauren or others for that matter

that are actually in the barn working with me on a daily basis, I

take a lot of pride in that.@

Carlisle had walked hots for Amoss the summer after her

freshman year at the University of Louisville in 2009. After a

number of different jobs in the industry, she found her niche in

bloodstock.

AI really like working the sales and finding horses--it's a

challenge,@ said Carlisle. AI'm not a very good office doer, so I

enjoy being out there and actually working hands-on per se and

finding the next racehorse. That really appeals to me.@

CBA ENDORSES VIDEO SCOPE PROTOCOLby Jessica Martini

The Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association, in

acknowledgment of the increased use of video endoscopy on

sales grounds in the United States, has announced its

endorsement of the American Association of Equine

Practitioners AProtocol for Pre-Sale Video Endoscopic

Examination of the Upper Airway at Public Auction@ as a way to

help create uniformity and increase buyer confidence in the

procedure.

AI really don=t think there is a huge disparity in the way that

people have been video-scoping, but there certainly have been

a few small differences,@ said CBA President Gray Lyster. AIt=s

really important that we all get on the same page on the best

way to do this. It=s going to be valuable that we can stand

together and say all these videos follow the same guidelines. It is

fine-tuning what is being done now and setting some

Amoss and Carlisle a Winning Team (cont. from p1)

It=s been less than a year since Carlisle began assisting Amoss

in buying horses for clients, but it=s already paying dividends. A

promising juvenile the team got for $225,000 at OBS April, Long

Weekend (Majesticperfection), debuted at Churchill Downs

June 23 to officially win by five lengths. He=s pointing toward

stakes competition at Saratoga next.

ALauren found that horse, called me and told me how athletic

he was, and we made the purchase strictly on her finding the

horse,@ said Amoss.

The partnership works out well.

AThe 2-year-old in training sales are attractive from the

standpoint of you're getting to look under the hood. You're

getting to watch the horses breeze,@ continued Amoss.

AUnfortunately, they come at a very difficult time for me. It's in

the spring, we've got a lot going as we're preparing for the

bigger races here at Churchill, but I have full confidence in

Lauren and I turn it over to her.@

Amoss said Carlisle knows what he looks for in prospective

runners, but she=s also able to bring fresh approaches from a

different viewpoint that he might not have considered.

AI personally target athletes strictly,@ said Carlisle. AI don't look

at pedigrees before I look at horses; I look at the physical first. If

I don't like the way they're built, there's no reason for me to

look at their pedigree. From there, pedigree will tell you how

expensive they're going to be, depending on how they look.@

In the past, Amoss has been viewed, correctly or not, as

primarily a claiming trainer, but the last few years have seen him

concentrating more on yearling sales and even 2-year-olds in

training sales. Serengeti Empress was a $70,000 purchase at the

2017 Keeneland September sale.

AIn terms of how people view the stable since Serengeti

Empress won the Kentucky Oaks, it's a bit of a wry smile I have

about it because I've been doing this a long time,@ said Amoss. AI

didn't all of a sudden get really good at it overnight like from last

year to this year. I do recognize that people see it as something

that separates you from a lot of other guys. Maybe that's more

perceived than real. Whatever it is, I'll take it.@

The process starts anew for Amoss and Carlisle when yearling

sale season officially kicks off at the Fasig-Tipton July sale next

week.

AThis time of year, it's reload,@ said Carlisle. ATwo-year-olds are

behind us. So [at] Fasig July, I'll be out there looking at every

single horse, and then [at] Saratoga, I'll be at that sale as well. I

know Tom will be, too. The focus is to do it all over again.@

CBA Endorses Video Scope Protocol (cont. from p1)

The video scope, which is standard procedure at Australian

sales, has steadily gained in popularity as a way to avoid horses

being scoped multiple times by multiple vets prior to auction.

AAs a consignor, when you=re watching your horse being

scoped for maybe the 10th, 11th or 12th time, you can start to

debate the animal welfare aspect of it,@ Lyster said. AIt=s too

often and we need to find a way to try to at least begin to

embrace these videos. A lot of places around the world have

already implemented and had some success with videos.

AAs a seller, what=s really important to me is buyer confidence

and if I am replacing their individual vet scoping a horse with my

video, I want their feedback and I want to do it in the best way I

can and to have it presented the best way we can. What we=re

hoping to do in 2019 is really ease into it.@

Page 5: AMOSS AND CARLISLE CBA ENDORSES VIDEO SCOPE … · breakthrough win in the GI Kentucky Oaks with Serengeti E mp re s( Al t na io). y h d f g haven=t changed, but a few other things

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 7 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • JULY 4, 2019

Endorsing a uniform policy is one way to move the process

forward and among the guidelines is a narrower window of time

for the test to be done before a sale.

AWhen we scope with grades that we are using in our vet

reports, the horses are usually scoped when the X-rays are

taken,@ Lyster said. AAnd that can be anywhere in that 21-day

window [before the sale]. But what we are saying to our

membership is, if you=re doing a video scope, you need to be

within a 10-day window.@

Lyster said the CBA had found almost unanimous support for

the endorsement of the protocol, although he doesn=t expect

video scopes to completely replace individual vets scoping horses.

AThere are going to be more and more videos on the grounds

this year than ever,@ Lyster said. ABut this isn=t an area where the

CBA is hoping that people will stop allowing their horses to be

scoped and only provide videos. We=re actually suggesting to

our membership that they still fully allow all the scoping of their

horses that they have in the past. Just because we are providing

videos does not mean that we=re trying to shut people out from

scoping our horses in 2019. We=re really hopeful, actually, that

people will watch videos and scope our horses and try to learn

something from it. I think you=ll find a lot of buyers out there who

are wondering the same thing--why haven=t we done this yet?@

TEN ADDED TO JULY HRA SALE An additional 10 entries have been added to the Fasig-Tipton

July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, bringing to 200 the

number of head catalogued for the auction, which will be held

next Monday in Lexington. Among the new additions is Federal

Case (Gemologist) (hip 594), who was second in this year=s

GIII Hutcheson S. for Robert and Lawana Low. The sophomore is

consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency.

Also added is stakes-winning 3-year-old filly Brunette Princess

(Bodemeister) (hip 596); 5-year-old Royal Asscher (Tale of Ekati)

(hip 597), who was third in Saturday=s GII Princess Rooney S.;

and 2-year-old Lady Glamour (Discreet Cat) (hip 598), who was

third in Saturday=s Debutante S. at Churchill Downs.

The July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale will take place

Monday beginning at 4 p.m. Fasig-Tipton=s July Sale of Selected

Yearlings will be held Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m.

EVEREST SLOT AVAILABLE A slot in the 2019 TAB Everest--Australia=s richest race--is

available for sale via a tender process, Racing NSW has

announced. The A$14-million TAB Everest will be run at Royal

Randwick on Saturday, Oct. 19. The 2019 slot will be sold to the

person or organization that it is deemed Abrings benefit and

adds to the promotion and appeal of the race@--the price paid

will not be the sole factor in selecting the winning bid. The

winning bidder will have the right to nominate his or her own

horse or strike a deal with the owner of another horse for the

race. The slot is strictly for the 2019 renewal of the race and

there is no accompanying option for future runnings. AThe slot

has attracted many interested parties who are willing to pay the

amount necessary,@ said Racing NSW CEO Peter V=landys. AThe

challenge for them is how they can show that they will bring

something unique to The Everest. We have already done a

Barrier Draw on the Opera House, so you can rule that out.@ The

tender process will close at 4:00 p.m. local time on July 12. For a

copy of the tender documentation, contact Racing NSW at (02)

9551-7556 or [email protected].

OLD FRIENDS TO CLOSE KENTUCKY SATELLITE SITE Old Friends has announced it will be closing its satellite

division based at Kentucky Downs in Franklin at the end of July.

The division is home to seven Old Friends retirees, including

Canadian Horse of the Year Thornfield, Kentucky Turf S. winner

Rumor Has It, and Grade II winner Ball Four. It has been open to

the public since June of 2015, and tours were scheduled and

conducted by staff at the Simpson County Tourism office. The

horses will be returned to Old Friends=s Georgetown location

and are expected to ship July 25.

The collaboration was originally designed by Old Friends

president Michael Blowen and former Kentucky Downs

President Corey Johnsen to help raise awareness of retired

racehorses and to promote local attractions in Simpson County.

AWe had a wonderful run, but unfortunately, we did not

achieve the level of tourism or growth we had hoped for,@ said

Blowen. AWe felt it was no longer cost effective to remain open.

AWe are eternally grateful to Dan Ware and his staff at the

Simpson County Tourism Office for the enormous support they

supplied this venture, and to our farm manager Jennifer Jones

for the impeccable care she provided our horses,@ Blowen

continued. AThe staff at Kentucky Downs has been a very

gracious host, and we can=t thank them enough for their backing

in this project.@

JOCKEY & JEANS RAISES $205K FOR PDJF The sixth-annual Jockeys and Jeans Fundraiser, held this year

at Santa Anita June 22, raised over $205,000 for the

Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. The event featured a

speech from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who received the

first Jockeys and Jeans Person of the Year Award. Fifteen Hall of

Fame riders signed autographs during a morning session at

Santa Anita and a dozen later mingled with the crowd and

honored guests, including severely injured former riders. Former

trainer Leah Whitesell was given the first Uphill Push Award for

her work raising funds to purchase and then drive a wheelchair

accessible van 1,100 to long-time paraplegic former jockey

Vincent Amico. Hall of Famer Chris McCarron was also a

featured speaker. The Stronach Group=s Chief Strategy Officer,

Aidan Butler, and its COO, Tim Ritvo, attended the event. The

latter took the podium to discuss his own riding career and the

need to support the PDJF.

AThe bottom line is this, Jockeys and Jeans will be doing

another event at one of The Stronach Group=s tracks in the

future,@ said the group=s president, Barry Pearl. ASo many there

worked hard to make the event a success and it=s obvious they

genuinely care about catastrophically injured jockeys.@

Jack Fires, 63, who has been a paraplegic since a racing

accident at River Downs when he was 21, was attending his

third Jockeys and Jeans event.

AI know all of us [injured riders] feel good about being

recognized,@ said the PDJF Board Member. AA lot of us can=t

make it to the track anymore and this is a way to be involved in

something that at one time was a big part of our lives. And I

think it=s a way for the Hall of Fame jockeys and everyone else to

get familiar with the folks they are helping. All of us enjoyed

being there.@

Since it was founded in 2014 by a group of former jockeys,

Jockey and Jeans has raised more than $1.2 million for the PDJF.

Wet Your Whistle Gets his Grade I in the Highlander | Michael Burns photo

A SMALL OWNER HAS SCORED BIG WITH

WET YOUR WHISTLEBy Bill Finley

“Inside the Winner’s Circle, Presented by Keeneland” is a series

showcasing graduates of the Keeneland September sale who

have gone on to achieve success on racing’s biggest stages.

For the last 10 years

or so, David Palmer

has showed up every

year at the Keeneland

September sale. He

arrives with a limited

budget and modest

expectations. Of

course, he would like

to purchase a horse

that will go on to win

the GI Kentucky Derby

or the GI Breeders’

Cup Classic, but he’s

only willing to buy one

horse each year and

prefers not to spend

more than $25,000. He

knows that by buying

so few horses and

spending so little money, the odds that he leaves Lexington with

a future superstar are not with him.

He’s fine with that.

“With our budget, my wife and I are just trying to have fun,”

he said. “Of course, we want to at least break even, but the goal

is to get our kids into the winner’s circle and just have a good

time. We have a great time going to the racetrack as a family,

watching our horses compete and run and, hopefully, win.”

For the most part, Palmer, who lives and works in Maryland,

was meeting his goals. He had had a few winners along the way

and he and his family had enjoyed every moment they had

spent at the track watching their horses campaign.

So, when he purchased a son of Stroll for $17,000 at the 2016

Keeneland September sale he would have been perfectly happy

if the horse turned out to merely be a solid campaigner, who

had an injury-free career and raced 25 or 30 times with the

Palmer family there at the track to cheer him on.

Never did he think this particular horse would wildly exceed

his expectations and take him to places he never expected to go

as an owner. That $17,000 purchase is now a Grade I winner

named Wet Your Whistle (Stroll). He added the Grade I victory

to his record when capturing the June 29 GI Highlander S., a six-

furlong turf race at Woodbine. The victory raised his career

earnings to $221,574.

This came some two

months after he gave

Palmer his first stakes

win as an owner in the

Get Serious S. at

Monmouth.

“We’re not sure what

his limits are

anymore,” trainer

Mike Trombetta said,

adding that the GI

Woodbine Mile is a

possibility for Wet

Your Whistle. “I am

looking at one-turn

races up to seven

eighths. I’m not sure if

he can go a mile or

not, but I think at this

point, with as well as he is doing, we have to consider the

Woodbine Mile. Hopefully, he’s on his way to finding his picture

on the cover of Keeneland’s sales catalogue some day.”

Palmer picks out the horses he buys himself and says that

whenever he goes to Keeneland, his first stop is at the barn of

breeder and consignor Beau Lane.

“I always stop by Beau Lane’s barn,” he said. “Beau and his

whole family do a tremendous job with their foals, so I always

make it a point to look at everything in their barn. I had them

pull all their horses out and I saw this guy. He was a solid

individual with a nice shoulder, a big hip, a nice walk and had

good scope to him. He fit perfectly in our barn.”

Lane thought highly of Wet Your Whistle, but was pretty sure

he was not going to sell for much. At that point, his sire, Stroll,

had not produced a Grade I winner and the dam, Winlocs Glory

Page 9: AMOSS AND CARLISLE CBA ENDORSES VIDEO SCOPE … · breakthrough win in the GI Kentucky Oaks with Serengeti E mp re s( Al t na io). y h d f g haven=t changed, but a few other things

Days, had yet to produce a horse who had placed in any stakes

races.

“He was back in the sale and his dam had no black type on her

page and neither did her dam,” Lane. “When you have no black

type for the two dams on the catalogue page, that’s usually the

kiss of death.”

Lane said the dam was far more inbred that one normally sees

in this era, and that had always been a turnoff to prospective

buyers. Winlocs Glory Days is out of Winloc’s Millie, a mare by

Mr. Prospector out of Mr. Prospector mare named Our Millie.

“A long time ago, when more people were breeding to race,

you’d see something like that more often,” Lane said. “Now, so

many people are looking to sell horses at the sales and the goal

is to make a profit. You have an inbred horse like that and

people don’t know what to expect, so they’re not going to want

to buy it.”

Because of the inbreeding, the fact she had a modest racing

record and a knee problem that halted her career on the

racetrack, Winlocs Glory Days’ prior owners had given her to

Lane for free. He said that, prior to Wet Your Whistle, he had

lost money with every horse Winloc’s Glory had produced.

So, on paper, Wet Your Whistle looked like a horse that didn’t

have a very good chance of making it on the racetrack. But

plenty of horses outrun their pedigree and their sales price, and

this one is a perfect example.

Wet Your Whistle made his debut as a 3-year-old, winning a

$40,000 maiden claimer at Laurel. That told Trombetta and

Palmer right away that this one was better than just a normal

horse, but they struggled to get the very best out of him. He lost

his next six races.

“Mentally, he was very immature,” Palmer said. “We had quite

a few issues steering him. He was very erratic, very headstrong.

We tried different bridles, bits, blinkers to get him to relax and

keep his mind on his game.”

Despite the fact that Wet Your Whistle broke his maiden on

the dirt, Trombetta was convinced he had a grass horse on his

hands, but had trouble finding suitable turf races because of a

rainy stretch throughout the summer and fall last year. Finally,

he was able to get the horse into a seven-furlong race over the

synthetic Tapeta surface last December at Woodbine and Wet

Your Whistle responded with an 8 1/4-length win. Seven-and-

half months and four races later, he has not lost since. The

streak, Trombetta says, has been a combination of the gelding

having matured and no longer racing on the dirt.

“You’ve got to give David and Michael a lot of credit,” Lane

said. “They were very patient and gave this horse the time he

needed to mature. They stuck by him and turned him into the

horse he is today. You wish more people would do that. They’ve

done a great job.”

Palmer said Wet Your Whistle will likely start next in the Aug. 3

GIII Troy S. at Saratoga, a 5 1/2-furlong race on the grass. Should

his horse perform well there, a return trip to Woodbine for the

Woodbine Mile is a distinct possibility. That’s a “Win and You’re

In” race for the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Can the $14,000 yearling purchase wind up in the Breeders’

Cup Mile? He’s got more to prove before that becomes a real

possibility, but he’s already won a Grade I race and made a tidy

profit for his owner. At the sale, Palmer was simply looking for a

horse that he could enjoy and share the experience with his

family. He got that and so, so much more.

EXPENSIVE ST ELIAS PAIR HEADLINE

BELMONT BABY RACE; $825K COLT DEBUTS

AT ELLIS; BAFFERT FILLY LOOMS AT LOS ALby Joe Bianca

5th-BEL, $80k, Msw, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 3:40 p.m. ET

Vinnie Viola’s St Elias Stable will have high expectations

heading into Thursday’s July 4 card at Belmont, as it unveils a

coupled entry of 2-year-olds who cost a combined $900,000 at

last year’s Keeneland September Sale in the day’s fifth event.

The first half of the pairing, trained by Todd Pletcher, is

$400,000 KEESEP grad DR POST (Quality Road). The dark bay is

out of Grade II winner Mary Delaney (Hennessy) and has trained

forwardly at Saratoga, capping off preparations with a swift half-

mile gate breeze in :48 flat (2/44) June 26 on the Oklahoma.

His teammate is Night Code (Honor Code), a $500,000 KEESEP

buy owned in partnership with West Point Thoroughbreds.

Attempting to become the first winner for his freshman sire (by

A.P. Indy), the Steve Asmussen trainee is a half to ‘TDN Rising

Star’ Moonshine Memories (Malibu Moon), who won her debut

at Del Mar in August of 2017 en route to capturing both the

GI Del Mar Debutante and GI Chandelier S. Also drilling sharply,

including a half-mile gate work in :46 2/5 (1/17) June 25 at

Keeneland, Night Code is out of a half-sister to dual champion

Favorite Trick (Phone Trick).

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile)

will be represented by the fast-working Another Miracle.

Owned by Len and Jonathan Green, the bay cost $210,000 at

KEESEP and is out of SW Retraceable (Medaglia d’Oro). Trained

by Gary Contessa, he was the swiftest of 80 half-mile workers on

the local training track June 7 when covering the distance in

:48 1/5 from the gate. TJCIS PPs

8th-ELP, $50k, Msw, 3yo/up, 1mT, 5:10 p.m. ET

Win Star Farm and Stonestreet Stables’ CENTRAL PARK

(Pioneerof the Nile), bought for $825,000 as a KEESEP yearling,

makes his debut for trainer Rodolphe Brisset in this turf route

finale. The bay is out of SW turfer Dynazaper (Ghostzapper),

while his second dam is GSW Broad Dynamite (Broad Brush). He

shows an encouraging worktab at Keeneland going back to early

May, punctuated by a half-mile breeze from the gate in :46 3/5

(1/66) there June 26. TJCIS PPs

8th-LRC, $40k, Msw, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 7:28 p.m. ET

Bob Baffert unveils a sophomore filly with big potential for

Three Chimneys Farm in SHOCKING FAST (Distorted Humor).

The bay is the first foal out of unraced Amour d’Ete, a half-sister

to champion and star sire Speightstown (Gone West) and full-

sister to MGSW/MGISP Irap who hammered to Three Chimneys

for $1.75 million at KEESEP in 2013. Shocking Fast shows a local

workout back on Apr. 23 which was just that, going a half-mile

from the gate in an eye-popping :45 1/5 (1/6). She also worked

in company with champion Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg})

when covering five panels in 1:01 flat (5/26) June 28 at Santa

Anita. TJCIS PPs

LUCULLAN (h, 5, Hard Spun--Golden Velvet {MGSW & GISP-US

future MGISW Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}) while finishing

ahead of current division leader Bricks and Mortar (Giant’s

Causeway) in the 2017 GIII Hill Prince S. here, appeared on his

way to stardom as a 4-year-old when powerfully annexing a

Gulfstream optional claimer to kick off his campaign in February.

Things didn’t quite pan out though, as he finished sixth in the

GII Muniz Memorial H. at Fair Grounds and third in the local

GIII Fort Marcy S. May 5 before being shelved for the rest of the

season. Made the narrow second choice at 9-4 in this return, the

bay tracked the speed of Noble Indy (Take Charge Indy) from a

three-wide third through soft fractions of :24.79 and :49.78.

Drawing on even terms as the pace picked up through three-

quarters in 1:13.11, he took the lead a furlong out and edged

clear despite drifting and swapping leads to score by 1 1/4

lengths. Noble Indy held the place. The winner, who ran his final

quarter-mile in :22.02 according to Trakus despite his

erraticness, is a half to Innovative Idea (Bernardini), GSW,

$229,343. His dam has a juvenile Medaglia d’Oro filly named

I'M FEELING LUCKY (f, 3, Blame--Shortbread Scotty, by

Bluegrass Cat) scored in frontrunning fashion by 6 1/2 lengths

debuting in the local slop June 5 and was made a 17-10 repeat

proposition here. Establishing command from her inside draw,

the bay clicked off a :22.40 quarter and was challenged by

favored Kiffle (Take Charge Indy) three furlongs from home.

Those two continued to spar all the way down to the wire, with

I’m Feeling Lucky digging in stubbornly to earn a neck decision.

The winner’s dam is a half to Richies Party Girl (Any Given

Saturday), the MSW dam of Maven (American Pharoah), who

became the first stakes winner for his sire when annexing the

G3 Connolly’s Redmills Prix du Bois Saturday at Deauville.

MISS PEPPINA (f, 2, Bayern--Shehaseyesforyou, by Is It True),

an $80,000 OBS April buy after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5,

rallied from well back to graduate on debut Wednesday at

Belmont. Breezing five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 (8/27) over the local

main track June 23, the chestnut was given a 12-1 chance and

broke alertly before being steadied a bit behind the first flight.

Continuing to get shuffled all the way back to eighth midway on

the turn, she started to advance five sixteenths out, and tipped

three deep at the top of the lane. Floated out one path further

in early stretch, she started to gain steam after that and swept

past Avuncular (Uncle Mo) a sixteenth out before edging away

to score the two-length upset, becoming the third winner for

her freshman sire (by Offlee Wild). Avuncular held for second

from the gate here in :35 4/5 (1/25) June 22 and was supported

as a narrow 5-2 favorite to become the fourth winner for his

freshman sire (by A.P. Indy) in this debut. Bumped at the start,

he recovered quickly and was hustled up under the whip to duel

with More Than Charming (Verrazano) through a :22.78 quarter.

Shaking that rival off in early stretch, he then hooked up with

Deacon (Liaison) and gamely edged ahead in the final sixteenth

to prevail by a hard-fought neck. Second choice Kentucky

Floret, a half-sister to Moonlight Cloud | Arqana

Madhmoon | Racing Post

MOONLIGHT CLOUD SISTERSHINES IN DEAUVILLE

Floret (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 210) was the standout of the

Arqana Summer Sale catalogue, being a half-sister to the four-

time Group 1-winning miler Moonlight Cloud (Ire) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}), and she fulfilled her potential in the ring when

scooped up by Tony Nerses on behalf of Imad Al Sagar for

i380,000 on Wednesday.

Offered by Charles Briere=s Fairway Consignment, the unraced

3-year-old filly is out of the stakes-placed Ventura (Ire)

(Spectrum {Ire}), and she is also a full-sister to U.S. listed winner

Cedar Mountain (Ire). The second dam, Wedding Bouquet (Kings

Lake), won the G3 Park S. and the GIII Monrovia H. and was

twice Group 1-placed at two, while under the third dam is the

likes of the dual Derby winner Generous and his dual Classic-

winning half-sister Imagine.

Nerses said the filly would return to Blue Diamond Stud in the

UK and a mating plan would be decided upon, while consignor

Briere said, Ashe is a lovely filly, she arrived to Fairway only two

months ago and adapted very well to her new life. She has a

great page; you can't get better for breeding, especially being a

half-sister of Moonlight Cloud.@

MADHMOON TO DROP BACK IN TRIP G1 Investec Derby runner-up Madhmoon (Ire) (Dawn

Approach {Ire}) is set for a mid-season break followed by a drop

in trip after running fourth in last weekend=s G1 Irish Derby.

Madhmoon sat midpack and well off the runaway leaders

Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Norway (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in

the Irish Derby but never made a serious bid.

"We don't really know what to make of the Irish Derby," said

Angus Gold, racing manager to owner/breeder Sheikh Hamdan.

"There's no question we'll now bring him back in trip. At no

stage was I convinced he was a mile-and-a-half horse. I can't say

he didn't stay it because he finished second in the Derby, but I

think he'll be more effective over a mile and a quarter.

"It was a non-event for us,@ Gold said of the Irish Derby. AThe

plan was to try to track Ryan [Moore on Anthony Van Dyck] and

try to quicken past him, but Chris [Hayes] said Ryan never took

him into the race and we couldn't get past him in any case.@

"While Anthony Van Dyck did run on into second, he never

travelled especially well and Broome was always out the back,

so maybe they were all a bit flat after Epsom--who knows?@

SESSION TOPPERSARQANA SUMMER SALE

Moonlight Cloud Sister Shines In Deauville cont. from p1

At the close of trade on Wednesday, cumulative figures wound

up nearly on par with the 2018 edition of the sale. With just one

more horse offered this year (381), the number sold rose slightly

(298) resulting in a clearance rate that was up five points to

78.2%. The aggregate finished at i7,798,500. The average was

down ever so slightly at i26,169, while the median jumped

29.2% to i15,500.

Of the in-foal mares offered on the day, topping the table was

The Channel Consignment=s Torentosa (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB})

carrying to Zoustar (Aus) (lot 218). The 11-year-old, a half-sister

to G1 Investec Derby winner Wings of Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi

{Ire}), was picked up by Tweenhills Farm for i140,000. It was

Henri Bozo who signed the ticket on behalf of David Redvers,

and he acknowledged Redvers=s faith in Zoustar, the standout

Australian champion first-season sire who recently completed

his first shuttle season at Tweenhills.

AI bought her for my friend David Redvers,@ Bozo said. AHe

believes a lot in Zoustar and he wants to give him every chance

possible, so she is going to Tweenhills.@

Redvers is also familiar with the female family via the mare=s

3-year-old half-sister Sparkle Roll (Fr) (Kingman {GB}); he bought

her for i750,000 at Arqana August. She has won twice and was

third in the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot last month.

Other in-foal mares to feature included Contessa Du Barry (Fr)

(Motivator {GB}) (lot 261), in foal to Almanzor (Fr) and bought

by Scea Domaine Rymska for i100,000; and a pair of mares

bought by Haras du Saubouas: Boscastle (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in

foal to Caravaggio (Ire) (lot 263) for i90,000 and Kelty In Love

(Fr) (Keltos {Fr}) in foal to Panis (Fr) (lot 252) with a Wootton

Bassett (GB) filly at foot for i80,000.

The remainder of the leaderboard was dominated by horses in

training, many of those jumpers or former flat horses bound for

the fences. Signing as TJ Bloodstock, Tony Jones went to

i210,000 for the 3-year-old colt Belsanndi (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire})

(lot 404) from the Aga Khan Studs. Jones indicated the horse

would go to Ireland with a view to continuing on the flat before

going over hurdles.

Reaching i150,000 were Crealion (Fr) (Creachadoir) (lot 415),

a winner over fences bought by Alex Elliott, and For Langy (Fr)

(lot 420), a 4-year-old AQPS entire bought by Guy Petit.

Madhmoon To Drop Back In Trip cont. from p1

Gold continued, AOur horse doesn't look a stayer, he's not bred

to be one and will certainly be coming back to a mile and a

quarter. Maybe when he's matured, he might even drop back to

a mile one day.@

Gold said the key later-season target for the Kevin Prendergast

trainee will be the G1 Irish Champion S.

"He needs a break, he's had a hard time,@ Gold said. AThe

obvious target has always been the Irish Champion S. Whether

he has a run before I couldn't say, but I saw him on Tuesday and

he looked fresh considering what he's been through."

SANGARIUS TO STEP UP Khalid Abdullah=s Sangarius (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the 2 1/4-

length winner of the G3 Hampton Court S. at Royal Ascot, will

step up to Group 2 company for the York S. on July 27. The >TDN

Rising Star= won the Listed Flying Scotsman S. at two and was

fourth in the G1 Dewhurst S.

"He's come out of the race fine, and we'll look at the Sky Bet

York S. later this month--it seems to be a good progression for

him," said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner/breeder

Khalid Abdullah. "It all seemed to click at Ascot. We've always

thought a lot of him and we hope there's more in him, but

certainly it was pleasing to see some of our expectations being

realised. He's a nice, big, scopey horse."

Grimthorpe also provided an update on another Juddmonte

Kingman >TDN Rising Star=, Headman (GB), who won the G2 Prix

Eugene Adam on Sunday for trainer Roger Charlton.

"He won really well," said Grimthorpe. "It was a good day out,

and he could return to France for the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano,

the Group 2 at Deauville.

"He's grown into his frame. After he won at Newbury, giving a

lot of weight away, he has progressed from that. The ground

went too soft [when a non-runner] at Ascot--he definitely wants

good ground. I think it was on the fast side of good at

Saint-Cloud."IN TDN AUS/NZ TODAYTHE MYTH OF THE SMALL STALLION

PLUSVITAL UNVEILS MOTIVATOR GENEEdited Press Release

Research by scientists at the University College Dublin and

Plusvital has established that there is a genetic contribution to

whether a horse is likely to race and has identified genes

associated with behaviour that may be key influencers. One of

these genes, PRCP, has been dubbed the Amotivator gene@ by

the researchers. The researchers acknowledged that previous

studies have shown that less than half of Thoroughbred foals

bred to race actually make it to the racecourse.

AOur study of 4,500 horses, some that raced and some that did

not, has established a measurable genetic link to future racing

potential and identified several genes of particular importance,@

said Plusvital=s Dr. Emmeline Hill. AThe most important genes

appear to be involved in neurological or behavioural traits. This

is fascinating in the context of trainers= assessments that a

horse=s >attitude= to their exercise regime is among the most

important aspects to a positive outcome on the racetrack.@

AOne of the genes, known as PRCP, has previously been shown

to be associated with voluntary wheel running in mice. Our

findings support the theory that, just as with humans,

motivation to exercise may be a critical factor in maintaining a

training regime and achieving a high level of fitness. Some

horses are just naturally keener for their job than others.

In addition to establishing a genetic link, the scientists

developed a new predictive test for determining the chances a

Thoroughbred has of making a racecourse start in their 2- and

3-year-old racing seasons.

AThe prediction model analyses the DNA of a horse and then

categorises them as having a >High=, >Medium= or >Low= chance of

making a racecourse start,@ Hill said. AHorses categorised as

>High= are more likely to have a racecourse start, more likely to

run in more races, more likely to have higher earnings but

curiously do not have a significantly different sales price. This is

therefore valuable information that even the most astute in the

market currently cannot assess from the pedigree or by physical

assessment of the horse.

AOf course, genetics cannot on its own replace the current

tools. There are many other reasons a horse may not progress

to race, through injury or the presence of performance-limiting

disorders.

ABut while there are veterinary screening tools for those, there

is currently no other means to determine a young horse=s

motivation to exercise other than long-term observation, and by

then it may be too late to get the best out of them.@

NEW GROUP WINNER FOR SHAMARDAL Dropping back to six furlongs for the first time in his career,

Gestut Brummerhof=s Waldpfad (Ger) (Shamardal) made the

transition seamlessly as he garnered a first black-type win in

Wednesday=s G3 Sparkasse Holstein Cup at Hamburg. Headed

late on when runner-up in the seven-furlong G3 Grosser Preis

der Landeshauptstadt Dresden last time June 16, the homebred

bay was reserved in fifth early by Wladimir Panov. Gifting first

run to Ambiance (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) in the straight, the 17-10

favourite delivered a sustained effort out wide to cut him down

inside the last 100 metres and record an authoritative 1 1/2-

length success.

Pedigree Notes In doing so, Waldpfad was becoming the third black-type

winner for the unraced Waldbeere (GB) (Mark of Esteem {Ire})

after the six-times group-winning miler Wiesenpfad (Fr) (Waky

Nao {GB}) and the listed scorer Waldtraut (Ger) (Oasis Dream

{GB}) who was also placed in both the German Fillies= Classics,

the G1 Preis der Diana and G2 German 1000 Guineas. The

second dam Wurftaube (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) was the

winner of four group races herself and proved to be an equally

excellent producer with 11 stakes performers. Her descendants

include the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Waldpark (Ger) (Dubawi

{Ire}), the triple Group 1-winning Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire})

and the G1 St Leger hero Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}).

Waldbeere also has an as unraced 2-year-old filly by Kingman

(GB) named Waldkonigin (Ger) and filly foal by Postponed (Ire).

Snitzel stands at 15.3 hands | Bronwen Healy

THE MYTH OF THESMALL STALLION

By Richard Edmunds

"Could he be a bit small?" It's the question that dominates

conversation regarding first season sires standing under 16

hands high every year. But does size really matter?

Thoroughbred history is full of examples of small stallions

overcoming their size for stellar stud careers, but a perception

still lingers that size makes the sire. Farms are often reluctant to

state that a stallion is under 16 hands due to the associated

stigma.

In his book Breeding the Racehorse, renowned breeder

Federico Tesio emphasised the importance of stallion selection.

ASelection is the element which has made the greatest

contribution to developing the thoroughbred,@ he said. AGood

with good gives good, bad with bad gives bad, good with bad

gives half and half.

A(Because a stallion has multiple offspring per year and a mare

only one), the selection of the male is nature=s own method of

preventing a deterioration of the species. Consequently, only

the best males are used for breeding.@

Because of the attributes a stallion is expected to pass on to a

foal, when breeders and studmasters are selecting their

stallions, they might be guided by what they want the resulting

foals to look like.

Initial bias Leading bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills believes it all comes

down to the market=s desire for yearlings to be a certain size,

and time and time again he has seen the industry=s deck stacked

against smaller stallions in the early stages of their careers.

AWhen they first retire to stud, I=ve definitely seen a real bias

against those smaller stallions,@ he said. AI think it=s a result of

the yearling market. If you take a small yearling to a sale, you=re

going to be crucified. The same is probably true at the other

extreme as well, although a horse is never likely to become

overly big when they=re still a yearling.

AIt=s a real anomaly in this game. History has shown that size

has nothing to do with how likely a stallion is to succeed. You

only have to regard Snitzel (Redoute=s Choice) at the moment.

"There have been plenty of absolute midget stallions who have

been outstanding. It doesn=t make a lot of sense, but there are a

few things in the industry that don=t make sense.

"In the past, people might have been breeding horses in order

to improve the breed and things like that, whereas now

everyone is breeding to make money. The struggle that small

stallions face at the beginning of their careers is just one of a

number of strange things that result from that.@

Historical considerations Even before the commercial considerations of the modern era,

size was viewed as a prized asset in a stallion B dating all the

way back to the 18th century, when the legendary Eclipse (GB)

(Marske {GB}) towered over his peers.

In some cases, stallions with imposing physical presence have

lived up to those looks with stud careers to match. Galileo (Ire)

(Sadler=s Wells {USA}) is a tick over 16 hands, and he has

followed an outstanding racing career with a breathtakingly

dominant reign at Coolmore Stud.

His own exceptional sire Sadler=s Wells (USA) (Northern

Dancer {Can}) was also over 16 hands, while other luminaries

such as Nijinsky (Can) (Northern Dancer {Can}) and Mr

Prospector (USA) (Raise A Native {USA}) stood at 16.3 and 16

hands respectively. More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo

{USA}) is 16 hands.

Outstanding American stallion Dynaformer (USA) (Roberto

{USA}), who sired Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro (USA) but also

excelled with turf horses including Melbourne Cup hero

Americain (USA), was 17 hands.

In this part of the world, Cambridge Stud=s mighty Zabeel (NZ)

(Sir Tristram {Ire}) was also an imposing individual, while

Danehill (USA) (Danzig {USA}) and his champion son Redoute=s

Choice each topped over 16.1hh.

Overcoming their stature However, despite a lack of size providing a barrier to successthat can deter some buyers and studmasters, countless smallerstallions have overcome their small stature to achieveoutstanding success at stud. "I actually think small size can be a benefit in our racingconditions," explains agent Damon Gabbedy. "Horses thatmature to a smaller size tend to be more precocious as they'refaster to mature, can handle more work as there is less stress onthe joints, and can be nimble around our turning tracks. I'm a bigfan of small stallions and buying their neat but strong progeny." The influential pair of Northern Dancer (Can) (Nearco {Ity})and his son Danzig (USA) stood at 15.2 and 15.3 handsrespectively, while Danzig=s son War Front (USA) is also 16hands. Australia=s current record-breaking superstar Snitzel stands at15.3, alongside his two other highest-priced barnmates whostand under 16hh - Not A Single Doubt (Redoute=s Choice) andDundeel (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}). John Messara, who stands the trio at Arrowfield, rejects thenotion that a stallion=s size has any bearing on their prospects. AWhen I look at a stallion prospect and think he=s >too small=, Ionly have to look at Arrowfield=s current roster to cautionmyself,@ he said. AChampion sire Snitzel, leading sire Not A SingleDoubt and our rising star Dundeel are all around 15.3 hh, andtheir records alone are enough to dispel any bias in themarketplace against smaller stallions. AThe same is true of big stallions, even though we might thinkthat Australia=s circular racetracks and generally firm surfaceswould tend to work against them. Redoute=s Choice (Danehill{USA}) and Flying Spur (Danehill {USA}) were both 16.2 hh, andboth were sensational Group 1 winners at two as well aschampion sires. AIf I have learned nothing else during my 40 years in racing andbreeding, it is that size is not an indicator of a stallion=s ability toimpart the qualities we seek in a racehorse.@
