Romancing the Stone
Leave the dainty jewelry at home: Fall calls for big, regal rocks
BY JACQUELINE DETWILER

Hands UpLike to take your gaming on the road? The choices for portable play have never been this good. BY TOM SAMILJAN
WAY BACK IN 1977, a handheld device about the size of a vintage calculator hit the market. Powered by a 9-volt ba ery and distinguished by tiny red lights blink-ing across a tiny plastic screen, Ma el Football was one of the fi rst shots in the handheld gaming revolution. Today, the exponential growth of mobile phone games—by far the most popular down-loads at both the Android and iPhone stores—has taken the genre well beyond the mainstream and deep into the pop psyche. Meanwhile, Nintendo is adding extra dimensions to its biggest fl agship titles for the 3DS, the Japanese gaming company’s 3-D handheld, and Sony, in an eff ort to stay in the game, just released the PlayStation-certifi ed Xperia Play, complete with a slide-out gaming-controls tray. This winter, Sony will launch the successor to its PlayStation Portable, an HD, Wi-Fi-connected dynamo called the PSVita.
What all this adds up to is the biggest console ba le in gaming history, thanks to wireless interconnectivity and the scope of today’s handheld market. Here’s a—ahem—handy analysis of the gear coming out now. Game on.

HOW IT’S DONE
City. Slicker.South Korea’s Songdo International
Business District isn’t just the largest planned community in the world, it’s also one of the greenest. The massive
undertaking includes eco-friendly waste and transportation systems,
the tallest high-rise in the country and dozens of LEED-certifi ed buildings.
Here’s how they did it.BY JACQUELINE DETWILER
SOUTH KOREA
3 The 68-story Northeast Asia Trade Tower overlooks “Central Park” in an innovative way: The base is square, but as the building rises, each fl oor is a slightly diff erent shape, culminating in a triangular roof. Because square shapes and triangular shapes have diff erent centers of gravity, the eff ect is that the top of the tower actually angles out over the foliage.
2 One resource the coastal city has in abun-dance is seawater. Designers will fi ll the city’s artifi cial canal with saltwater instead of fresh in order to save the good stuff for residents’ living needs. The seawater is pumped through the canal using gravity and wind turbines, and will also be used to cool buildings.
Nearly all of Songdo IBD’s 1,500 acres are built on 500 million tons of sand from the bottom of the ocean. There’s just one major problem: Salty earth kills trees. So designers have crafted a “geotextile,” a giant semipermeable sheet that separates the topsoil from the ocean sand, keeps plants hydrated and harvests extra rainwater for alternative uses.
1
Whereas other metropolitan areas waste energy on burning trash or truck-ing it out to landfi lls, Songdo IBD sucks refuse through a presorted pneumatic waste system. It arrives at a collection facility where recyclables are removed and some of the waste is incinerated to heat water for residences.

“The app looks like a replica of the paper magazine on the surface. However, it has a few interactive tricks that traditional magazine publishers should take a look at. Navigation, for example, is excellent with simple “page-turning”, with indicators and a table of contents that slides out from the left whenever you want it. There’s an orange ‘links’ indicator at the top left of pages that takes you to web pages related to items on that page. And, there are expanded photo and video content for some articles.
All of these small touches add up to a quality e-magazine reading experience that is better than what I’ve seen in most of the conventional e-periodicals I’ve read on my iPad. Ironically, this app version of Hemispheres magazine cannot be read during takeoff and landings as the paper version can.”
