Welcome to GCSE Media Studies

You’ve made a good choice – it’s an exciting and fast-paced subject.

You probably know more than you realise.

It’s great for developing skills and creativity.

What is Media?

Write a definition of what you think ‘media’ means.

The English dictionary says it’s “A means of communication that reaches large numbers of

people”

Do you agree?

What types of media are there?

Draw a spider diagram of the different types of media you are subjected to. Once you have drawn yours,

work with the people on your table to add to your web.

How do you get it?

Circle the ones you use most often and make a list of all the ways you can ACCESS it.

E.g. Film = cinema, illegal download, LoveFIlm, TV, Sky Box Office, DVDs…

Media and Power

• Does the media have power?

• How does it use that power?

• Can the mass media abuse that power? If so, how?

What will you study in Y10 Media Studies?

• Study music videos and how they represent gender.

• Study the music industry and how CD covers are produced (leading to a production piece).

• Study short films and research, plan and present your own.

• Study horror films and research, plan and produce your own.

What will you be required to do this year?

• Use correct terminology • Analyse moving and still images • Write analytical essays • Use video cameras • Edit – with titles, effects and sound • Research • Evaluate • Be active in the media • Show an interest in all aspects of the media • Understand how processes work • Be able to work in groups • Use Photoshop

If you finish early, start to create your glossary at the back of your book. Write in any key media words you have learnt today.

Homework

Due in FRIDAY 14TH SEPTEMBER.

Fill in the MEDIA CONSUMPTION LOG.

Read the instructions and use this time to ask any questions you have about it.

Look at this advertisement.

Describe what you can see in the image. E.g. • Low-cut top • Tuxedo • Perfume

Once you’ve done that, start to think about what these different things mean. E.g. • Low-cut top = sexy,

appeals to men, aspirational to women

• Tuxedo = wealthy, important, smart, aspirational to men

Helicopter = wealth

Sean John is king? Or YOU are king?

Autograph = fame

Low cut top = sexy. Women want to be like them, men want to stare at them!

Suggestive body language = sex appeal

Tuxedo = smart, wealthy, important

Ring = Marriage?

King = Royalty. Celebrity as royals - worship

Sean John is in the middle = he’s most important

What is the overall MESSAGE that this advertisement is trying to send?

Sender encodes a message.
