This is the beginning of the old traditions of this place called Quich. Here we shall write and we
shall begin the old stories, the beginning and the origin of all that was done in the town of the
Quich, by the tribes of the Quich nation.
Are kut xchiqakam wi, u qalajobisaxik, u tzijoxik puch, u kutunisaxik, awaxibal, saqiribal, Chi saqil kolem, saqil tzij. Xchiqelesaj, rumal maja bi chik ilbal re Popol Wuj, ilbal saq petenaq chaqa palo. U tzijoxik qa mujibal, ilbal saq kaslem, chuchaxik.
And here we shall set forth the revelation, of all that was hidden. We shall bring it to light because now the Popol Vuh, as it is
called, cannot be seen any more in which was clearly seen the coming from the other side of the sea and the narration of our life.

Areu tzijoxik wae. Das ist die Kunde: This is the account:
Da war das ruhende All. Kein Hauch. Kein Laut. Reglos und schweigend die Welt. Und des Himmels Raum war leer.
Dies ist die erste Kunde, das
erste Wort. Noch war kein
Mensch da, kein Tier. Kein Gras.
Kein Wald.
sanfte Meer, einsam und still.
Ka katzininoq, kakachamamoq,
katzinonik, ka kasilanik, ka kalolonik,
katolona puch u pa kaj.
Wae kut e nabe tzij, nabe uchan.
Maja bioq jun winaq, jun chikop,

Xma ko wi naqi lakolik yakalik. Xa
remanik ja, Xa lianik palo,
xa u tukel remanik.
All was in suspense, all calm, in silence; all motionless, still, and
the expanse of the sky was empty.
This is the first account, the first narrative. There was neither
man, nor animal. The surface of the earth had not appeared.
There was only the calm sea and the great expanse of the sky.
There was nothing brought
together. There was nothing standing; only the calm water,
the placid sea, alone and tranquil.

man Grnfederschlange.
Xa kachamanik, katzininik,

Xa u tukel ri Tzakol. Bitol,

ko nay puch u Kux Kaj.
Are u bi, ri Kabawil chuchaxik.
There was only immobility and silence in the darkness, in the night. Only Tzakol, the Creator, Bitol, the
Maker, the Winner Tepeu,
Gucumatz, the green feathered Serpent, Alm and Caholom, the
Forefathers, were in the water surrounded with light. They were
hidden under green and blue feathers, and were therefore called
Gucumatz. By nature they were great sages and great thinkers. In this
manner the sky existed and also the Heart of Heaven, called Cabavil,
Who-sees-in-the-Darkness, as it is said.
Ta xpe kut u tzij waral, ta xenaojinik, ta xebisonik, Xeriqo kib xkuch ki tzij, ki naoj. Ta xkalaj, ta xkikuxlaj kib. Xewi saq ta, xkalaj puch winaq. Ta xkinaojij u tzukik, u

They talked then. It became clear to them that when dawn would break, man must
appear. Then they planned the creation, and

the growth of the trees and the thickets and the birth of life and the creation of man.
Thus it was arranged in the darkness and in the night by the Heart of Heaven who is
called Huracn
Kaqulja Juraqan nabe, u kab kut Chipi Kaqulja, rox chik Raxa Kaqulja. Chi e ku oxib ri, u Kux Kaj.
Seine erste Erscheinung ist der Blitz,
Cakulh Huracn.
The first is called Thunderbolt, Caculh Huracn, the second Youngest Thunderbolt,
Chipi-Caculh, the third Sudden Thunderbolt, Raxa-Caculh. And these three are the Heart
of Heaven.
Ta chuxoq! Kixnojintaj, areri jacheltaj, chijamataj, chiwinaqir, waulew, u laqel, ta ku rib, chata kut. Ta chawaxoq, ta sqiroq, kaj, ulew. M ata kut u qijilabal, u qalaibal ri,

Thus let it be done! Let the emptiness be filled! Let the water recede and make a void, let the earth appear and become solid. Thus
they spoke. Let there be light, let there be dawn in the sky and on the earth! There shall be neither glory nor grandeur in our creation
and formation until the human being is formed.

Gebirge erschienen. Und sogleich sprossten Zypressen und
Tannen und bedeckten das Gesicht der Erde.
Earth! they said, and instantly it was made. Like the mist, like a cloud, and like a cloud of
dust was the creation, when the mountains appeared from the water; and instantly the
mountains grew, divided were its paths water, and the groves of cypresses and pines put forth shoots together on the surface of the
earth.
Keje kut xkikot wi ri Qukukmatz; Utz mi xatulik, at u Kux Kaj:
And thus Gucumatz was filled with joy, and exclaimed: "Your coming has been fruitful,
Heart of Heaven; At Juraqan,
at pu Chipi Kaqulja, Raxa Kaqulja.
Du, Huracn! Du, Chip-Cakulh!
Du Raxa-Cakulh!
and you, Huracn, and you, Chipi-Caculh,
and you, Raxa-Caculh!"

Ta xkinojij chik u chikopil juyub, chajal re kechelaj, ronojel u winaqil juyub: Ri kiej, tzikin, koj, balam, kumatz, sochoj, kan ti, chajal kaam. Kachari Alom, Kajolom: Xa pa chilolonik? Ma xason chitzininik U xe che, kaam? Kate utz chikoje, chajal re, xecha
kut.
Then they made the small wild animals, the guardians of the woods, the spirits of the mountains: the deer, the bird, the puma and the jaguar, and the guardians of the thickets: the serpent, the snake and the viper. And the Forefathers asked: Shall there be only silence and calm under the trees, under the vines? It is well that hereafter there be someone to guard them."
At kiej, pa be ya, pa siwan katwar wi. Waral katkojo wi pa kim, pa saqul, pa kechelaj kipoqo wi iwib. Kajkaj i binibal, i chkabal chixik, xeuchaxik.
"You, deer, shall sleep in the fields by the river bank and in the ravines. Here you shall be amongst the thicket, amongst the pasture;
in the woods you shall walk on four feet and multiply. Thus it be done" So it was they spoke.
-

Ix, ix tzikin, chuwi che, chuwi kaam, kixochin wi, kixjain wi. Chiri kixpoqwi, kixkiritaj wi chuqab kaam. Xe uchaxik kiej, tzikin. Ta xkibanoj, ronojel xukamo u warabal, u yakalibal.
"You, birds, shall live in the trees. There you shall make your nests; there you shall multiply; there you shall increase in the branches of the trees and in the vines." Thus the deer and the birds were told; they did their duty at once, and all sought their homes and their nests.
Ta xeuchax chi kut ri kiej, tzikin rumal Tzaqol, Bitol, Alom, Kajolom, Kixchawoq! Kixsikinoq! Mixyonolikinik, mixsikinik. Kixchawajetaj chi jujunal, chiju tak, chobil, chi
ju taq molajil, xeuchaxik ri kiej, tzikin, koj, balam, kumatz,
And the creation of all the four-footed animals and the birds being finished, they were told by Tzakol and Bitol, Alom and Kaholom: "Speak, cry, warble, call, speak each one according to
your variety." So was it said to the deer, the birds, pumas, jaguars, and serpents.

Chibij na kut ri qa bi. Kojiqijarisaj, oj i chuch, oj i qajaw. Kixcha wa na kut: Juraqan, Chipi Kaqulja, Raxa Kaqulja, U Kux Kaj, U kux Ulew, Tzaqol, Bitol, Alom, Kajolom.
Kixchawoq! Kojisikij! Kojiqijila! xeuchaxik.
Ruft uns an uns mit unseren Namen, euren
Vater, eure Mutter!
Lobt uns! Preist Huracn, Chip-Calculh, Raxa-
Calculh,
das Herz des Himmels, das Herz der Erde, Tzakol, Bitol,
Alom und Kaholom. Ruft uns an! Verehrt uns!
"Speak, then, our names, praise us, your mother, your father.
Invoke then, Huracn, Chipi-Caculh, Raxa-Caculh,
the Heart of Heaven, the Heart of Earth, Tzakol, Bitol,
Alm, Kaholom;
speak, invoke us, adore us!"
Ma ku xitzinik, xechawik kejeta riwinaq. Xa kewechelajik, xa kekaralajik, xa kewojonik.
But they could not make them speak like men; they only hissed and screamed and cackled.

So sei
es.
When the Creator and the Maker saw that they said: "It is impossible for them to say our
names, the names of us, their Creators and Makers. This is not well."
Then they said to the animals: "Because it has not been possible for you to talk. Therefore we shall make other beings that shall be obedient. Accept your destiny: your flesh shall be torn to
pieces. So shall it be.
Keje kut xechakataj wi ki tiojil, xkipatanij, xetiik, xekamisaxik, ri chikop ko waral, chuwach ulew.
For this reason the animals which were on earth were condemned to be killed and eaten.

Keje kut u tijtobexik chik winaq tzaq, winaq bit, kumal Tzaqol, Bitol, Alom, Kajolom. Xa qa tija chik. Mi xyopij rawaxik, u saqirik. Qa banatzuqul qe, qol qe. Jupacha ta kojsikixoq, ta kojnabax puch chuwach ulew? Ta u tzaqik kut, u banik puch. Ulew,
xoqol, u tiojil xkibano.
Also musste ein neuer Versuch gestartet
For this reason another attempt had to be made to create and make men. The Creator,
the Maker, and the Forefathers said: "Let us try again! Already dawn draws near:
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us! What shall we do to be invoked, in order to
be remembered on earth? Then was the creation and the formation. Of
earth, of mud, they made man's flesh.
Ma ku utz xkilo. Xa chiyojomanik, xa tzubulik, xa nebelik, xa lubanik, xa wulanik, xa pa chiumarik. Mawi chikolol u jolom. Xa jun benaq wi u wach, xa kul u wach, mawi chimuqun chirij.
But they saw that it was not good. It melted away, it was soft, did not move, had no
strength, it fell down, it could not move its head, its face fell to one side, its sight was blurred, it could not look behind. At first it
spoke, but had no mind. Quickly it soaked in the water and could not stand.
-
12
Xecha chi ku ri Aj Tzaq, Aj Bit: Qa wachlabeq, ta chuxoq xa labe. Mawi chibinik, ma pu chipoqotajik. Ta chuxoq. Xa u naoj chi ri, xecha.
And the Creator and the Maker said: "Its evident that our creatures will not be able to
walk nor multiply. Let us consider this." Then they destroyed their work and their
creation.
-

Xecha chikut: Jupacha qi chiqabano. Chutzin ta wi, chinawachir ta wi, qijiloy qech, sikiy qech? xecha.
Und sie fragten einander: Wie knnen wir
unsere Anbeter, unsere Verehrer vollkommener erschaffen?
And they said: "What shall we do to perfect it, in order that our worshipers, our invokers,
will be successful?"
Ta xkinaojoj chik: Xa qabij chike Xpiyacoc, Xmucane, Junajpu Wuch, Junajpu Utiw: Kitijachik u qijixik, u bitaxik. Ta xkibij kut u bixit richikech, ri e nikwachinel: Ratit Qij, Ratit Saq, keuchaxik kumal ri Tzaqol, Bitol. Are ki bi ri Xpiyacoc, Xmucane.
"Let us say again to Xpiyacoc, Xmucan, the Great Hunters: 'Cast your lot again. Try to
create again.'" In this manner Tzakol and Bitol spoke to hose soothsayers, the Grandmother of
the day, the Grandmother of the Dawn, and whose names were Xpiyacoc and Xmucan.

"Enter, then, into council, Life-giver, Patriarch, our grandmother, our grandfather,
Xpiyacoc, Xmucan, make the grains speak, make light, make dawn. Have us invoked, have
us adored, have us remembered by created man, by made man, by mortal man. Thus be it

Beginning the divination, the forefathers Ixmucan and Ixpiyacoc, the Masters of the
Tzit Grains, said: "Get together, grasp each other! Speak, that we may hear. Say if this
man of wood is he who must nourish and sustain us when there is light when it is day!

Then the grains talked: "Your figures of wood shall come out well; they shall speak and talk
on earth."
Ju sukxbanik poy, ajam che. Xe winaq wachinik, xe winaq tzijonik puch. Are winaqil u wach ulew. Xeuxik, xepoqik, xemealanik, xekajolanik.
And instantly the figures were made of wood. They looked like men, talked like men, and
populated the surface of the earth, they had daughters, they had sons.
Ma ku ja bi kux, ma pu ja bi ki naoj. Xaloq xebinik, xechakanik. Ma na sonol kaqan, ki qab. Maja bi ki kikel, ki komajil. Xa u tijtobexik, xa pu

Mawi xkinataj chik ri u Kux Kaj. Keja kut xepaj chi wi. Xa u tijtobexik chi winaq.
But they did not use their souls, nor minds; they walked on all fours, aimlessly.
It was merely a trial, an attempt at man. At
first they spoke, but their face was without expression; their feet and hands had no
strength; they had no blood, nor substance, nor moisture, nor flesh; their cheeks were dry,
their feet and hands were dry, and their flesh was yellow.

gelb.
They no longer remembered the Heart of Heaven and those who had created them; and
therefore they fell out of favour.
E nabe tzatz chi winaq, xeuxik waral chuwach ulew.
These were the first men who existed in great numbers on the face of the earth.

Kate kut ki kisik chik, ki maixik, ki kutuxik puch, xekamisax chik, poy, ajam che. Ta xnaojix ki butik rumal u Kux Kaj.

Immediately the wooden figures were annihilated, destroyed, broken up, and killed. A great flood was brought about by the Heart
of Heaven, which fell on the heads of the wooden creatures. A heavy resin fell from the
sky. The one called Great Owl came and gouged out their eyes; Camalotz, the Great
Bat came and cut off their heads; Cotzbalam, the Wild Jaguar came and devoured their
flesh. Tucumbalam, the Great Tapir came, too, and broke and mangled their bones and their
nerves, and ground and crumbled their bones.
Kumal xqequmarik u wach ulew. Xtikarik qeqal jab, qijil jab aqal jab.
The face of the earth was darkened and a black rain began to fall, by day and by night.

habt uns gefoltert. Jeden Tag, jede Nacht und im Morgengrauen

Then came the small animals and the large animals and sticks and
stones, and all began to speak: Their earthen jars, their
griddles, their plates, their pots, their grinding stones, all rose up.
"You have done us much harm; you ate us, and now we shall kill you", said their dogs and birds of the barnyard.
And the grinding stones said: "We were tormented by you; every
day, every day, at night, at dawn, all the time our faces went holi,
holi, huqui, huqui, because of you. This was the tribute we paid
you. But now that you are no longer men, you shall feel our
strength. We shall grind and tear your flesh to pieces."

And then their dogs spoke and said: "Why did you give us
nothing to eat? You scarcely looked at us, but you chased us
and threw us out. Now you shall feel the teeth of our mouths." And
then, they destroyed their faces.

And their griddles and pots spoke: "Pain and suffering you

faces. The stones of the hearth hurled themselves straight from
the fire against their heads causing them pain.

So was the ruin of the men who had been created to be destroyed and annihilated.
And it is said that their descendants are the monkeys which now live in the forests. And
therefore the monkey looks like man, and is an example of a generation of men which were
only wooden figures.

Himmel genommen.
And once again Alom and Kaholm, the Forefathers, Tzakol, the Creator, and Bitol, the Former, Tepeu, the Winner, and Gucumatz, the
Green Feathered Serpent, said: "The time of dawn has come, let the work be finished, and let those who are to nourish and sustain us appear,
the noble sons, the civilized vassals; let man appear, humanity, on the face of the earth."
They assembled and held council in the darkness and in the night; then they sought and
discussed with all their wisdom. In this way discovered what must enter into the flesh of
man.
It was just before the sun, the moon, and the stars appeared over the Creators and Makers.

From Paxil, from Cayal, as they were called, came the yellow ears of corn and the white ears
of corn. These are the names of the animals which brought the food:
the mountain cat,
the coyote, the parrot
and the crow. They came from Paxil and showed them the
road. And in this way they were filled with joy,
because they had found a beautiful land, full of pleasures, abundant in ears of yellow and white
corn, and abundant also in cacao and innumerable fruits, and honey. There was an abundance of delicious food in those villages
called Paxil and Cayal

And then grinding the yellow corn and the white corn, Xmucan made nine drinks, and from this
food came the strength and the flesh, and with it Alom and Kahlom, Tepeu and Gucumatz

So the corn entered into the formation of man by the work of the Forefathers. Water went to be his blood. Of corn-meal dough they made the
arms and the legs of man. Only dough of corn meal went into the flesh of our first fathers, the
four men, who were created.

They were endowed with clairvoyance. When they looked, instantly they saw all around them,
and they contemplated in turn the arch of heaven and the round face of the earth. Without
first having to move, their sight reached to the forests, the rocks, the lakes, the seas, the
mountains, and the valleys. In truth, they were admirable and wise men, Balam-Quitz, Balam-

Do you not hear? Are not your speech and manner of walking good? Look, then!
Contemplate the world!" And immediately the four first men began to see all that was in the world. Then they gave thanks
to the Creator and the Maker:
sprechen, denken, gehen.

They examined the four comers, the four points of the arch of the sky and the round
face of the earth.
Ma ku utz xkitao, ri Aj Tzaq, Aj Bit. Mawi utz rimi xkibij, qa tzaq, qa bit: Mi xqetamaj ronojel nim, chutin, kecha. Keje chi kut u kamik chik, ki naoj, Alom,

Was sollen wir jetzt tun? Sind sie nicht bloe Geschpfe? Sollen sie denn Gtter sein wie
wir? Was ist, wenn sie keine Nachkommen
zeugen wollen und sich nicht fortpflanzen,
wenn die Sonne aufgeht? So sprachen sie.
But the Creator and the Maker did not hear this with pleasure. "It is not well what our
creatures say; they know all, the large and the small." And so the Forefathers held
counsel again. "What shall we do with them now? Perchance, are they not simple
creatures? Must they also be gods? And if they do not reproduce and multiply when it will dawn, when the sun rises? And what if
they do not multiply?" So they spoke.
Xa qayojo chi sqaqin chik, ko chi karaj.
Wir mssen ihre Fhigkeiten ein wenig

Thus spoke the Heart of Heaven, Huracn, Chipi-Caculh, Raxa-Caculh, Tepeu, Gucumatz, Alom, Kaholom, Xpiyacoc,
Xmucan, Tzakol and Bitol. And immediately they changed the nature of

Then the Heart of Heaven blew mist into their eyes, which clouded their sight as
when a mirror is breathed upon. They could see only what was close, only what was
clear to them.

In this way the wisdom and all the knowledge of the first four men were
destroyed. They became only human beings, Jaguar of the Woods, Jaguar of the Night,
Lord of the Night, and Jaguar of the Moon.

They are our ancestors, our fathers of the origin and beginning. They are the roots of our people, the nation and the place called
Quich.

Jeder unserer Vter erhielt eine Frau und
grndete mit ihr einen Stamm. Sie hieen: Cah-Paluna, Chomih, Tzununih and Caquixah
Then their women were made. They conceived the men of the tribes. These are their names:
Cah-Paluna, Chomih, Tzununih and Caquixah.
Each tribe multiplied into thirteen families, and each family into many great branches.
And each tribe had their priests and sacificers to worship our Creators.
And in this way the desire and intention of the Heart of the Heaven was fulfilled.

Hre. Siehe. Wir schreiben dies schon unter dem Wort
Gottes, in Christenschrift, jedoch in unserer Sprache. Begreife.
This was the account of the Quich people. These were the old stories of the Popol Vuh.
We set forth the revelation, of all that was hidden. Listen.
The Popol Vuh cannot be seen anymore, our Creators became invisible. See.
This we wrote under the Law of God and Christianity, but in our own language.
Understand.
And once nobody will speak Quich anymore, once no mother will sing Quich lullabies any longer, once no Quich calls will be heard in
the woods anymore, once all the fires of the Quichs will have died, all places have burnt to cinders; once the earth has sunk back into
the waters and the day back into the night, then this tale shall tell about us, it shall
preserve who we are.
