In an hour’s time, the infa-mous Oreo-stuffed chocolatechip cookies had vanished,

not even a crumb left at Redlands’

Ed Hales Park.But that was the goal, to sell outof as many baked goods as possi-ble. More than 60 Redlands bakerswhipped up dozens of sweettreats, some that could only be

thought up in dreams, for theMarch 30 event benefiting ShareOur Strength’s No Kid Hungrycampaign, a mission to end child-hood hunger in the U.S.. The dessert masterminds baked

Ancient Egyptian magi-cal practices are thefocus when two UCLA

professors conduct an entertain-ing and richly illustrated lectureat Cal State San Bernardino’sRobert and Frances FullertonMuseum of Art – RAFFMA – onFriday, April 12, at 6 p.m. Magic affected every aspect of

ancient Egyptian life – fromeveryday healing to royalintrigues. The material remainsof ancient Egyptian magicalpractices include fascinatingmagico-medical papyri, amuletsand assorted figurines. UCLAprofessors Jacco Dieleman andElizabeth A. Waraksa will sharethe results of their personalinvestigations into the makingand use of these artifacts, whichwere created to heal and protect. Deileman earned his Ph.D.from the University of Leiden inthe Netherlands in 2005 and isworking as associate professor ofEgyptology in the Department ofNear Eastern Languages andCultures at UCLA. Deileman iscurrently preparing a text editionof an unpublished manuscriptthat is inscribed in demotic andhieratic with the instructions andincantations of the burial ritualperformed for a woman namedArtemis (The Artemis LiturgicalPapyrus). Waraksa is a lecturer in theProgram of Study and Religionat UCLA. She received her Ph.D.in Near Eastern Studies from theJohns Hopkins University in2007. Her work includes an entryon female figurines on thePharaonic period in the UCLAEncyclopedia of Egyptology.She also has excavated sites,including an Etruscan/Romansite in Umbria and at the Precinctof the Goddess Mut at Karnak inLuxor. This summer, Waraksawill be joining UCLA’s excava-tion at Jaffa (Tel Aviv).
