design in general can be seen to pass through phases of relative certainty
and doubt. B. Lawson
a good architectural design process is based on the successful interplay
between unpredictable and iterative processes and actors
the architect has traditionally a central position in the design process -his work and interaction with the other participants are essential for
developing good architectural design solutions and building projects
the AEC-industry face a rapid development within the field of ICT -
both definition of processes and roles are affected -
also the architects position and working conditions are in change

AIM AND FOCUS
OVERALL AIM
to contribute to more knowledge about how ICT impact on central processes
and actors within architectural design
FOCUS
work and interactions/collaboration within the design team
special focus on the architect
WHY IMPORTANT
much research focus on technology development and improvement
but: also research about technology impact on processes and roles within
architectural design important
APPROACHrelation-/process-oriented, not technology-oriented!

RESEARCH STRATEGY
flexible design strategy (evolves during data collection)
explorative purposemainly qualitative approach
MAIN METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS
reviews of contemporary literature and research
workshops with actors from both research and practice
multiple case studies of reference and building projects
MAIN SOURCES OF EVIDENCE IN CASE STUDIES
open-ended interviews with key-actors
documentary analysis
eventually small interview- or questionnaire survey
RESEARCH BASED ON TWO PARTS..a top-down approach the starting point

OVERVIEW OF THE PHD PROJECTS TWO MAIN PARTS
PART 1 PART 2
APPROACH
broad scope
AIM
contribute to better understanding and
overview of how ICT impact on the
complex processes and relations within
architectural design
THROUGH
development and application
of a framework for exploration of the topic
BASED ON - the interplay between
1) review of contemporary literature/research
2) workshops and discussions
3) broad case studies of building projectsAHUS project
ilsvika projects
APPROACHlimited scopediving
AIM
gain knowledge about interdisciplinary use of
BIM and its impact on central processes within
the design team -
especially the architects work and interactions
THROUGH
exploration of real life projects
BASED ON
application of framework for data collection,
analysis, pattern matching
WHY FOCUS ON INTERDISCIPLINARY USEOF BIM?
quite new and untested in practice
impact on processes and roles expected

SHORT ABOUT FRAMEWORK: FOCUS AND PURPOSE
framework needed as a support for
- getting overview of a complex topic
- carrying out, analyzing and comparing case-studies
- analyzing and organizing literature/theory
- narrowing and limiting scope/focus
the framework focuses on four central aspects of the architectural design
process
the generation of design solutions
communication
the evaluation of design solutions
decision-making
design generation
communication
design evaluation
decision-making
