Deconstruction & Building Materials

ReUse Network, Inc.

An environmental & social benefit corporationNon-profit 501 (c)(3)

Through various Deconstruction & Reuse Solutions, we:

• Support sustainable development

• Advance green building practices

• Build reuse alliances• Support complementary

non-profits

The Problem:Our landfills are overflowing

Annually, 34 billion tons of construction and demolition (“C&D”) waste ends up in landfills.

While we may have seen an increase in household recycling, building materials are rarely reused and too often

simply thrown away

Recycling is good, Reuse is better

Reuse = Using material repeatedly

Recycle = Using material to make new products

Reuse…

• Reduces air & water pollution

• Reduces consumption of energy & natural resources

• Saves money• Creates a reliable

alternative source of goods

US Environmental Protection Agency

Deconstructing one 2,500 square foot ranch style home can:

• Divert 25 tons of demolition waste!

• Save Embodied Energy spent in production of new material

• Supply quality, useable material to organizations & people who can benefit

• Create jobs and new satellite industries

Examples of residential reusable materials• Lumber

• Doors

• Windows

• Cabinets

• Roofing

• Bricks/Pavers

• Flooring

• Plumbing

• Lighting

• Appliances

We call upon & bring together

Planning is the key to savings!

Property Owners Can Achieve…

Tax deductions for donated materialsLower overall project costs

Contractors provide…

- greater choice for clients

- possible financial savings

- better environmental & social benefit solutions

Don’t let the first phase of your project

be the last thing you think about!

Architects & Designers can…Achieve LEED and/or Green Point Rated project credits

Play a critical role

Civic Leaders andWaste Management Professionals

- Provide environmental leadership

- Reduce C & D waste

- Preserve important resources

For-Profit & Non-profit Organizationsand Environmental Advocates

Raise funds from the sale of used material

Participate in the global green movement

Strategic AlliancesDonations of used building materials benefit:

Habitat ReStores help us achieve our mission while using revenue from sale of salvaged materials to build affordable

housing.

Corazon provides home building and community development resources though vocational training in an effort to build sustainable communities in Mexico. (www.corazon.org)

First: Gather Information

A. Property owners schedule an onsite review with a DRN representative

B. Get a no-cost estimate of the tax deduction (valuation approximation) from a qualified appraiser

C. Get one or more deconstruction bids for the scope of work

D. Run the Numbers

Residential Deconstruction (Pre-process)

Residential Deconstruction

Next: Prepare and Deconstruct

1. Choose a team

2. DRN inventories the structure’s reusable assets

3. Deconstruction happens

4. Property owners receive anitemized report and final appraisal for their tax filing

Residential Deconstruction: Physical Process

During deconstruction…

Bathrooms are dismantled

Flooring is saved

Windows & Doors are saved

energy efficient windows…

decorative windows…

utilitarian windows…

utilitarian doors…

not-so utilitarian doors…

not-so utilitarian stuff…

More stuff…

Fun stuff…

Materials go to the Habitat ReStore

great stuff for sale at the ReStore

big stuff for sale at the ReStore

Lumber is saved by the ton…

…shipped to Corazon…

…and given a second life

From that material, simple homes are

built, added on to or repaired

Together we promote a more sustainable region

And a more secure future…
