Ductile amorphous-crystalline nanolaminates

T.G. Nieh, University of Tennessee Knoxville, DMR 0905979

Monolithic metallic glasses are stronger than high-strength steels but brittle in compression because localized shear band formation.

By inserting ductile, nanometer-thick interlayers, shear band can be arrested and the nanolaminated structure become superplastic-like (>200%).

Ductile nanolaminates can be used for high-performance micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS).
