Fred's had a few standout performances paired with McTominay. They look like a fantastic pairing in big games. They're tenacious and cover so much ground.
When paired with Pereira he looks like he's never kicked a bloody ball before.
Something to be said for midfield partners.

Yeah honestly I wouldn't change the double pivot.
The two of them deserve to start. Pogba should play as a 10 (but not really a 10) think Ten Hag's Ajax and van deBeek. Kind of box to box in front of the double pivot

He had a very good game, just felt like every single aspect of his game was a little bit better and that meant he wasgetting to balls quicker, controlling them better, making more comfortable passes to his teammates etc.
I think Rashford had a better performance though, constantly creating danger out of pretty much nothing positions.

This gen of United has a problem of what I call playing to the opponent's level.
United basically can play just as shit as whatever lower placed team but can show up against the big matches, it mindboggling.
perma-link embed save parent report give award reply
[–] le_king_falcon 56 points 6 hours ago
It really isn't mind boggling though.
Better sides decide to have a go and play their own game. This leaves spaces for our attack to exploit, something theyare very very good at.
Lesser sides don't attack us but instead sit back in a more compact defensive setup, something our forwards do notexcel at at all.

Ironically enough, Rash is thriving starting on the left and making drifting runs to the middle at times. Solskjaerplayed him in the middle mostly (a considerable section of our fans were convinced that was the correct call back thenand blamed Jose for not doing the same) and continuosly backed him last season despite an extremely poor spell, only to play him on the left again and he's doing very well now.
perma-link embed save parent report give award reply
[–] deservedlyundeserved 42 points 9 hours ago
Rashford doesn't have the composure, finishing or hold up play to perform as a striker. He's very good at driving fromthe left, beating his man and cutting inside for a shot. The way to effectively use his pace is for him to start on the leftfor sure.
perma-link embed save parent report give award reply
[–] The_Promised_Land 15 points 9 hours ago
I think Jose essentially hinted as much when he was operating as a pundit on Sky. He said Rash can become a veryeffective player operating from wide if developed properly. He said he had no problem in playing Rash as the 9 in thewhat was the most important game of his United stint - the EL final, but week in, week out he'd rather not use him asthe number 9. If you remember our '4-0 FC' period, that's how the Martial/Rashford combination was being used and Imaintain that is his best role.

Exactly. I think Poch only won three(?) games away at Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, City and United.
Loved him as a coach, but they seriously underperformed in big away games. Also can’t forget Mourinho’s first gamewas their first away league win anywhere since January.
It’s hard to turn that around instantly. Then again, Mourinho’s record in the same fixtures has been pretty poor for awhile now as well.

United are actually quite good when they can be bothered. It's 100% a mentality issue, you see them turn up againstLiverpool, or Jose just because those games matter, and they run their socks off for 90 minutes, but against othersides it's all lethargic in the start because the players think they're better and can control the game. Never works.

It's nothing to do with workrate. We struggle against lower league opposition because they sit in a low block and wedon't have players with the creativity or technical ability to beat them. Ole hasn't tactically worked that one out either. On the other hand, big teams leave a lot of space in behind for our players to exploit and counter. Essentially thisteam thrives on space and an easy way to take points off us is to just sit deep and counter.

[–] availableusername10 69 points 9 hours ago
It was the difference, IMO. You can see how just having McTominay there gives the rest of the side confidence to pushforward. Big credit to him for the progress he’s made!

That's the weird thing with Ole, I know he's a meme but we have genuinely at times played some of the best footballin the post-Fergie era under him.
It's just the consistency that is a huge problem.
It's why it's a bit stupid when people act like no club would ever take him if we got rid. In a weird way I think he'sactually improved his rep as United manager.

To be fair, we were bossing top 6 sides under LvG as well, only to lose to bottom half teams immediately after. We'vebeen consistently inconsistent for a while now.

[–] ParkerZA 27 points 8 hours ago
Difference is we were inconsistent under LvG with a squad much stronger than this thin, injury ravaged andinexperienced team. There's tons of potential here.

Largely because good teams don't pack it in defensively against us. Often when we play smaller clubs they arecontent to sit back and let us have the ball, and (especially with Pogba out) we don't have anyone in midfield who canreally make a killer pass or through ball in the final third. So we look toothless but we also get sucked in and caught inattacking positions allowing teams to get numbers on us and counter. Obviously this isn't always the case, and I don'tnecessarily think Ole is a good enough manager to bring us back to the top, but it is tough to judge him with thisteam. We simply lack a lot of talent and depth in key areas. He had a good summer window if he can have a decentwinter one and a good next summer one we will hopefully be able to add some much-needed quality in the side.

[–] Biffabin 18 points 6 hours ago
Ferguson got to a level where you could give him any old Sunday league team and they'd probably be so scared ofhim they'd win trophies just to not incur his wrath, all the while he'd get other teams thinking about him and droppingpoints all over the shop.

Jose 100% got the starting line up wrong.
Winks and sissoko midfield is just shocking.
Ndombele is a must-start.
...
Annoying that man u played so good against us ffs
...
Also man u didn't time waste a crazy amount or anything but i really feel like something needs to be done to cut downon time wasting as much as possible. So much more than 4 minutes could have been added at the end consideringthe penalty was 2 and half minutes on its own
