Key principles for developing a research proposal Begin as early as possible Take advantage of all the resources and

expertise around you

Recommended Steps / Timeline

5 minutes after a research idea crosses your mind or as soon as you decide to resubmit a previous proposal Contact the Research Consultation Group and

set up a meeting to discuss your idea and potential funding sources

3 months before the proposal due date Participate in a Specific Aims Meeting Alert your Contracts and Grants Analyst

Send him/her a copy of the funding announcement

Data Core (Statistics) Group Dr. Lynn Brecht, the Director can make the

assignment Revise your specific aims

Review with consultants (School of Nursing and co-investigators)

1 month before the proposal due date Confirm that all letters of support, biosketches, and subcontracts are in hand

Contracts and Grants Analyst needs budget and subcontract information

Write the Facilities and Resources section Use the boiler plate write-up from the SON website

with specifics for your research

final draft

Contracts and Grants Analyst, PI, and subcontract site will work together to collect all necessary information and paperwork

Alternative arrangements for collecting signatures can be made to ensure efficiency and timeliness
