The current government reform began in the early1990s.

DECENTRALIZATION OF GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONS

A process devolving decision-making powers and financial

and people resources from central to local agencies has been started

functions have been planned

The structural reform of Public Administration was the first step in the decentralization process

from State to Regions and Local Authorities.

The principle of subsidiarity

The Republic of Italy accepts the directives

of the Maastricht Treaty:

Art 4 L. 59/1997: All administrative functions, except those expressly reserved for the State, are given to the regions and to

other local authorities

Thanks to decentralization, institutions get closer to citizens and citizens get

closer to institutions

Giving more functions and power to Local Authorities, community needs are

better satisfied and protected

Decentralization also involves a reform
