10 TIPS FOR FINDING THAT NEXT OPPORTUNITY

Preparing for your career

TAKEN FROM MAY 2010 PRESENTATION TO WWU MISA

#10 – Know your stuff, Be Prepared

Know the company, product, market and people BEFORE you go to any interview – have all your tools ready!

#9 – Be Yourself, Don’t Compromise

Understand what makes you YOU and set yourself apart from the rest.

#8 – Listen and Learn

Take the time to listen to what others are telling you – learn from every experience

#7 – Develop Communication Skills

Speaking, Writing, and Conversation skills are core to communication. Polish up on all of them in order to connect with your audience.

#6 – Open to change

Things change, people change, situations change - Be open to things you many not have considered or thought of before.

#5 – Be Generous and Give Back

Find ways to be involved outside of the corp world. Use your skills and talents to help make someone else better.

#4 – Build your network

You never know when you might need your network, so always build and nurture your connections.

#3 – It’s about the Relationships

The best opportunities are rooted in solid relationships – which is a two-way street (get and give back)

#2 – Find your passion

Truly understand what makes you tick and gets you jazzed to get up everyday.

#1 – Make It Happen!

Create a plan and go after it - Life (and work) isn’t easy, but have the determination to Make It Happen!

Twitter Top Tips

I asked my twitter network for some tips and here are a handful of responses:

@lamiki – “It’s all who you know and never stop networking”

@shelbyhealy – “Never, EVER burn a bridge and cut yourself off at two drinks at corporate functions!”

@The_Optimist – “Be present in whatever you choose to do”

@remarkmarketing – “Think big and map the steps to get there. Take no B.S. Have Fun. Be Passionate”
