•Metric/SI System

Metric System

- developed in the late 1700’s

- based on multiples of ten

SI System

- known as the International System of

Units

- developed in 1960 as an improved version of the

metric system

LengthBase Unit = meter (m)

What tool is used to measure length in the metric system???

Meter stick

How big is a meter?

One meter is about the height of a doorknob.

Approximately how tall are you in meters??

One centimeter (1cm) is about the width of your little finger or the diameter of an aspirin.

km hm dkm m dm cm mm

One millimeter (1mm) is about the thickness of a dime.

VOLUME- amount of space occupied by

an object

Volume of a Solid

BASE UNIT:

cubic meter (m3)

Regularly shaped solid (i.e. cube, sphere, pyramid, etc.)

- Use the formula for the object

For Example:Volume of a box = length x width x height

= 8

=4Height

=2

= 8 x 4 x 2

= 64

Irregularly shaped object (i.e. stone, pencil, etc.) Displacement- Use water and a measuring device (beaker, graduated cylinder, etc.)

A. B.

Volume of a Liquid

Base Unit: Liter (l)

1 liter = 1 L

A liter is just slightlylarger than a quart.

1 liter of waterwill weigh 1 kilogram

kL hL daL L dL cL mL

A medicine eyedropper will hold 1 milliliter = 1 mL (about 10 drops of water)

1 tsp will hold approximately 5 milliliters

kL hL daL L dL cL mL

Measuring a Liquid’s Volume

• 1) Graduated Cylinders

• 2) Beakers

• 3) Flasks

Using a Graduated Cylinder

You must read the bottom of the meniscus

Curved line that forms at the edges of liquid

Always Read at Eye Level
