Agenda Conversation Starters

Word Stress (pronunciation)

Pathways 2 listening and vocabulary

Conversation Starter 130A Parents usually want to buy the best things for their

children, such as electrical devices, educational

devices and clothing items. Fashion designers work

very hard on adults' clothes, but should they devote so

much time to designing children’s clothing? In other

words, what do you think about adults buying

expensive clothes for their children? (Ying Ying Boa,

fashion design, 130 A)

Conversation Starter 130A The size of the current flow depends on the voltage

and resistance ratio. This is Ohm´s law! The USA use

in their electrical distribution network 110V. Europe use

230V. Which do you think is more dangerous? Why?

(electrician, Martin 130A)

Conversation Starter 130A In organic chemistry experiments, reproduction of an

experiment is a very important process. Experimenters

often reproduce experiments which have been

reported or confirmed by the others, in order to inspect

the credibility of the method, phenomenon and data of

the experiment. What is the significance of the

reproduction of experiments? In your opinion, what are

the matters we have to pay attention to in the process

reproducing experiments? (Medical Chemistry, Cheng,

130A)

Conversation Starter 130BCivil engineers of the 21st century face the huge

challenge of creating structures that support people’s

passions and lifestyles. Can you think of any examples of

this? What will it take for the engineers 20 years from now

to meet society's challenges?

(Civil Engineering, Ananda Batsaikhan, 130B)

Conversation Starter 130B Solving "cold case" homicides depends more on the

emergence of new witnesses, a study suggests, than

the DNA analyses and other forensic techniques

celebrated in crime dramas. In your opinion, how can

witnesses help forensic scientists with cold

cases? (Forensic science, Hassan Al-Obaidly, 130B)

Conversation Starter 130B Business is a war without gunpowder and smoke.

Every manager needs to have the spirit of a wolf. If not,

their business may fail. So, I think that every manager

should be a predator. Do you think this statement

correct?(undecided,perhaps finance,Chao Deng, 130B)
