    Firstreleasedin2013,theSocialProgressIndex(SPI)measuresacomprehensivearrayofcomponentsofsocialandenvironmentalperformance,aggregatingthemintoanoverallframework.

    Theindex,whichcoversabout99%oftheworldspopulation,wasdesignedbyProfessorMichaelE.PorterattheHarvardBusinessSchool,ProfessorScottSternattheMITSloanSchoolofManagement,andtheSocialProgressImperative,anonprofitgroup.

    TheSocialProgressIndexshowsthatcountrieswithsimilarlevelsofGDPcanhaveverydifferentlevelsofsocialprogress,saidMichaelGreen,ExecutiveDirectoroftheSocialProgressImperative.

    Oneexample:CostaRicaandThailandrank59thand58thintheworldinGDP,respectively.However,Thailandranks57thintheworldontheSPIwhereasCostaRicaranks29thdueinlargeparttosignificantlyhigherratingsinpersonalsafety,personalrights,andtoleranceandinclusion.
