The Development of Parliamentary Government

• Act of Union1707• The Cabinet-The monarchs loss of power forced

them to rely on ministers to gain parliaments support.

• The Prime Minister-one member of the cabinet, emerged as the leader. Served over multiple monarchs.

• Cabinet’s Responsibility-if the monarch tried to rule without the cabinet, the monarch would not have support of parliamentary majority. The cabinet responsibility to Parliament was established in British political Practice.

Conclusion: How Glorious?• Revolutionary settlement reaffirmed the

established Church of England and restricted the power of the monarch.

• During the 18th Century the power of the Parliament increased and the power of the crown decreased.

• The British Constitutional Monarchy became the model for continental Europe.
