Title: Relation Between Aspects of Mother's Personality and Children's Behavior Disorders
Date of Publication / Place: December 2009/ Mazandran Province, Iran
Researchers: Ensiyeh Babaee and Sachin Jain
Method of Research: Descriptive profile of the post event in descriptive statistics, variance
analysis, and hierarchical regression
Number of Participants: 300 children
Statement of the problems:
1. Mothers' health is one of the most important and fundamental issues which the officials
of health and care and supreme education should address as an important and effective
part in society's individuals lives. The necessity of having a healthy society is having
healthy mothers and this health would not be verified unless mother enjoys mental health.
This research aims to address the study of relationship between different dimensions of a
mother's personality and depression in the child.
Findings:
The analysis of data shows that there is significant relationship between mother characteristic
dimensions and child behavioral disorders. It seems that the more the amount of mother's
psychotic manner and introversion, depression disorder in her children also increases.
Reflection Questions:
1. How I am beginning to think differently?
Backed up with this research finding, I can now imagine how hard it is to rear children especially
those with behavioral problems. A mother must not only be physically but also mentally fit in
order to handle these children. I begin to think that personality problems of mothers can be

reflected in their childs behavioral problems. Though this research does not give causality of
childrens depression, I can always think that the mothers personality is one of its indicators.
This broadens my perspective in resolving problems of children with depression. This only
means that in addressing the childs depression, I need to look to his interaction with his mother.
Getting the big picture of the situation will give more credible analysis and eventually the best
solution. I also begin to think the psychological assessment for child custody. This must be the
reason why parents need to undergo battery of test in order to help the judge to make the best
decision. On the other hand, I begin to believe in the findings of Sir Francis Galton. In his
accounts, he said that in getting the best offspring, one must consider the characteristics of the
mate as well as its genetic endowment.
2. What do I want to explore further?
This study opens up different lines of further investiga tions. First, I m thinking if the constructs
in this study are only applicable to child s depression or do high levels of neuroticism,
psychoticism and extraversion of mother can also predict other behavioral problems? Second,
since this study used Hans Eysenck Big 3, I wonder what results will I get using different
personality tests like Big 5 Personality Test and 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire. Since this
research only shows the constructs that predict childs depression , Id like to know if there are
any constructs that inhibits or reduce this problem. Third , Id like to know if the personalities of
other members of the family also contribute to the childs depression. This is also important
because mothers are not the sole responsible in the development of their children. Other
members also play an important role so investigating this lead may give us a better perspective of
the childs depression. Id like to know whose personality in the family influences the most.
Fourth, I wonder if I will get similar results if the subjects are teenagers and adults instead of
children. Will the personality of the mother still be significant or will the personality of
significant others like close friends or spouse will be the new indicator of depression? I can only
achieve the answer if I research related studies on these questions or I personally conduct them.

3. Insights and Realizations
This research gives me a clear view of how important the profession Im taking. With our
countrys tons of problems, it is more often that mental health of people was given the least
priority. This is very important because mothers need to be sensitive with their children problems. Children need guidance for them to adapt in difficult situations which can cause stress
to them. Similarly, parents, especially mothers should receive necessary education to improve
their mental health and to have awareness on different behavioral problems a child could acquire.
Engaged partners and newlyweds must continue to undergo series of counseling to prepare for
the life of parenthood. Considering the age of mothers nowadays is getting younger, this must be
also incorporated with the DepEd curriculum. I hope that professionalizing the field of
psychology in the country would increase the quality of service and improve its facilities. We
must have more field work rather than sit all day inside the offices. Also, I expect that
professional Filipino psychologist would have a greater scope up to the point that they have
touched the lives of everyone in the country.
