#2. **Plants take sun and change light energy into chemical energy that animals need!

Energy Transfer#3~varies, but in this example anywhere from 11-16%. Normally, we say only 10% is transferred!

Energy Transfer#4a. Considerably less energy is transferred!

#4b. AWV: electricity loss, heat loss through windows, roof and under doors, etc.; others?

1. Compare the following tasks to show your understanding of biosynthesis and breakdown processes. a. Use the T-Table on the next page to list examples of the biosynthesis and breakdown processes. List at LEAST

3 examples of each. Biosynthesis Breakdown Build up Break apart or decompose Putting things together-sugar to starch starch to sugar Synthesis is used to make new molecules breakdown is for digestion and sending For storage particles to where they need to go so they can Growth Synthesized somewhere new

#2. (1) They both help digest (breakdown) and re-sythesize organic molecules into forms usable for growth. (2) They both help make molecules for storage of energy.

#2. (cont). (3) Both processes help to make and reorganize macromolecules for bones, muscle and other body tissues (macromolecules).

Example: Digestion (Breakdown)

A form of breakdown or “decomposition” - occurs in the stomach

Is also a form of breakdown/ decomposition that occurs IN the cells

#3. Page 354

*Plants use energy from sunlight and molecules from carbon dioxide and water to produce ATP and sugars.*Sugars are converted into organic molecules using ATP for energy.*Those organic molecules are used for growth and maintenance of the plant

4. Explain why food can be considered a fuel.Because food is chemical storage (in the molecules) of energy. When food (the chemical bonds) is broken down, energy is released (stored in ATP) and this provides energy (or FUEL)for the organism to use for cell processes and mechanical energy.

5. Is it possible for animals to survive without plants? Why or why not?NO. Plants (and other photosynthetic organisms) are the only organisms capable of trapping the sun’s energy and turning it into a usable form of chemical energy for other living creatures on earth.
