I am delighted to present to you this report on the many great achievements of our staff and the clients weserved in 2006. One of the most impressive is the growth we have experienced in our Community OutreachProgram.
Our advocates fielded 4,109 calls on our crisis line in 2006, up 1,666 (or 40%) from 2004. Total number of areafamilies served in 2006 was 1263, compared to 743 in 2004. Through the Community Outreach Program we strive toconnect with, educate and counsel the 97% of victims of violence who may not need or want to go to shelter, butare in no less danger than those who choose to.
I want to thank the Turning Point staff for their professionalism, perseverance and compassion and I want to rec-ognize the strength and courage of our victims/ families. As a former victim myself, the one statistic that I believespeaks volumes for our programs’ effectiveness, and of which I am particularly proud is:
Nationally, the average number of domestic violence victims who do not immediately return to their assailants fol-lowing a shelter stay is between 30 and 45%. At Turning Point, over 71% of our clients leaving shelter do so withoutimmediately returning to their abuser.
In closing, I ask that you consider a gift to Turning Point this year. Your generosity is essential to the success ofour families victimized by violence. Many thanks.

Help for today…Hope for Tomorrow.
Domestic Violence is a core problem out ofwhich many of our most challenging communityissues arise. It is core to child abuse. It is core tojuvenile delinquency. It is core to adult criminalbehavior. It is often core to addictive behaviors andmental illness. It is core to delayed educationaldevelopment. Domestic Violence is not just anothersocial problem. It is at the center of and is causalfor many of our most troubling community con-cerns.
Let me tell you about 4 hours of one day I hadsometime in the last 6 months. I was in the plant ofone of our regional manufacturing facilities...
A plant employee came by. She was the Motherof a daughter who received services from TurningPoint in the past two years. Her daughter was rapedand held hostage in her home by her husband, whom she met as a co-worker at another (local)manufacturer … She tearfully claims her daughteris alive today because of the Prosecutors office andTurning Point and wanted to say thank you.
Next, I met a woman in her thirties who grew up in a violent household, “watching my Dad beatmy Mom all the time.” When I asked her if she hadmanaged to avoid being victimized as an adult, sheglared at me and said something our tougher folksoften say, “If a man ever hits me, it better be a goodone, because I guarantee you he won’t get anotherchance.” I believed her.
Next, a man came by. I asked if he was familiarwith Turning Point and our services and he said “I am becoming familiar with you. You have helpedmy wife.” Uncertain whether this was just a badmale joke we often hear, I waited before responding.
Then he started to say more. Like most abusers,he saw himself as the real victim. I have no doubthe was abusive.
Next, a woman who had raised two daughterswhile in an extremely abusive relationship for 27years. She had been out of the relationship for 12 years now. She said we were not around whenshe needed help. I apologized we could not helpher when she needed us, and when I tried toencourage her by starting to talk about all theprogress we were making, she said, “and you’re not doing enough now.”
Lastly, with a co-worker at her side, a woman in her early twenties whose sister was getting helpfrom Turning Point in another county came by tosay thanks. All of these conversations unfolded inone four hour time frame at one place. Mother, daughter, grandchild, abuser, workplace, adult childwho grew up in it, victim, 2 daughters, abuser, sister, church, abusive father-in law, co-worker…
Not a story you have read has been made up.Each is real!... And yet, I am hopeful, because Iknow where we have been and I can see where weare going. Our progress is significant and it reflectsnot just the growth and good work of Turning Point
staff, but also the broader engagement and com-mitment of many parties within our communities…
The woman who was victimized in her mar-riage 40 years ago was right when she said to me “you were not there for me.” That statementapplies to Turning Point and to all of our serviceareas. We were not there for her when sheneeded us. We have not always been there anddomestic violence has festered and grown. Nowwe are here and we are making good progress, but not yet doing enough. She’s right again. Let’s keep working at it. The stakes are very highand victims and children continue to show us thatthey will, in fact, succeed in large numbers whenprovided with the support they deserve.
Presented at our 2006 Bartholomew County Annual Report to the Community. To read the full presentation, or learn more about Turning Point’s services, go to www.turningpointdv.org

In August of 2006, thanks to a grant from the Heritage Fund, The CommunityFoundation of Bartholomew County, Turning Point hired Anne Courtney for the newly created position of Volunteer Coordinator. From family mentoring and client transport tochildcare and facility maintenance, Anne found the community ready and willing to help.
From August 2006 to May 2007, volunteers have provided over 1,700 hours of volunteer service including 600 hours of “essential operational duties” allowing staffadditional time to concentrate on client services.
We now have over 19 regular volunteers and our numbers continue to increase. When asked why she choseTurning Point, one volunteer responded that she chose tovolunteer at Turning Point through her own past experiencein an abusive marriage. She stated that “when I broke free,I decided I wanted to do whatever I could to help others do the same thing”. If you would like to volunteer, please call Anne at 379-5575 x107.
