Warhawks Soccer
Last season, second-year head coach Jamey Newsome had taken over the helm of Auburn University at Montgomery women’s soccer program just days before training camp began and the team responded with a 12-6-1 and took three-time defending National Champion Lee to the wire in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament. “I thought last season went really well considering how quickly the season started after I was hired,” Newsome said. “Luckily, my predecessor did a great job of leaving a talented group of girl’s to work with. I wasn’t able to plan as much as I would have liked, but I hope this year will be different as I have been able to get a little more organized and the returners know what my tendencies are and what to expect.” This season, despite returning nine letterwinners and six starters, the Warhawks must still overcome a hurdle – the loss of four All-Americans. “Replacing the likes of Amber Elam, Daisy Burnfi eld, Christine DeVito and Jana Yates is nearly impossible,” Newsome said. “My biggest regret is that I am not going to get a chance to spend more time with them. They were such enjoyable players to coach and I
learned a lot by having the op-portunity to coach such talented players.” “However, with that being said, I like the group we have return-ing and the newcomers we have added to our program.” Several key components of last year’s squad return, highlighted by junior midfi elder Helga Franklinsdottir, senior forward Kristen Mitchell and a defen-sive corps composed of seniors Heather Welch and K.C. Hewitt, as well as junior Asta Fridriks-dottir. “I have high hopes for our re-turners, as all played signifi cant
minutes last season,” Newsome said. “If we want to be successful, we will need some of them to step into more of a leadership role, in addition to being contributors on the fi eld.” At the forward position, Newsome returns Mitchell and Alberts-dottir, while also adding newcomer Karina Suetsugu, a former stand-out at Cochise College in Arizona. “Kristen is our leading scorer that is returning and we will rely on her to continue to score goals for our team,” Newsome said. “Margret was asked to play a role that was new to here and she stepped up to the task for us,” Newsome added. “She jumped right into the position and did an outstanding job. Hopefully, we can return her to her natural position, but it gives us some options with her versatility.” “Karina is a very good forward who has seen a variety of different styles of soccer. I am excited about seeing what she can bring to our team.” In the midfi eld, Franklinsdottir will anchor the offense after earn-ing SSAC All-West Division honors last season. “Helga does a little bit of everything and is someone our op-ponents will key in on,” Newsome said of Franklinsdottir. “She is a skilled passer, shoots the ball well and has a great vision of the fi eld.” Also factoring into the playing rotation at the position will be
returning junior Kristen Karlsdottir and newcomers Eyrun Rakel Agnarsdottir, Nicole Letford and Krista Hagen. “Kristen played a reserve role for us last season, but has a good skill set that will serve us well this year,” Newsome said. “Eyrun is an attacking midfi elder, who loves to get forward,” Newsome said. “She is a skilled player who I envision playing next to Helga. I think she is going to be a nice addition to our team.” “Nicole can play both midfi eld and forward and is very technical. She has quick feet and reminds me a lot of Jana Yates.” “Krista is a talented player who will bring an added dimension to our team. She is extremely quick and has great vision of the fi eld.” Freshman Maria Ros Arngrimsdottir, Larissa Brauns and Alanna Koch will provide depth at the position. Defensively, Fridriksdottir, Welch and Hewitt are locks in the rotation, while returner Inga Dis Juliusdottir and newcomer Melissa Ledesma will also be signifi cant contributors, potentially even start-ers. “Asta is an anchor in the back and is a vocal leader,” Newsome said of Fridriksdottir. “She keeps us organized and is someone I am planning to lean on for leadership on and off the fi eld.” “We moved K.C. around quite a bit last season before fi nding a home for her at defensive center mid,” Newsome said. “She ended up being one of those players that I didn’t want to take off the fi eld and I am certain she will have a similar role for our team this year.” “Heather is one of our most versatile players,” Newsome said of Welch. “She controls and moves the ball well, so I am hoping she will be more of an attacking midfi elder this year.” “Inga is a former all-conference performer who dealt with some injuries last year. She seems to be back in form and hope she can provide the punch she did a couple years ago.” “Melissa is a former junior college All-American, who has good size and is very athletic. She is a player I can see playing next to Asta and providing some stability to our defense.” Freshman newcomer Maren Heller will also factor into the rota-tion defensively. “Maren has easily the best background of any player we have,” Newsome said. “She has played in some very high level tournaments and on some competitive club teams.” In goal, junior Margret Ingthorsdottir returns as the incumbent starter, but the addition of freshman Holly Clarke will push her for minutes. “We are going to be counting on Margret to step in and be our starting goalkeeper this season,” Newsome said. “She had an opportunity to learn behind Daisy last year and is a talented player, so we are expect-ing good things from her this season.” “Holly is a goalkeeper from England and will compete for playing time,” Newsome said. “She is extremely enthusiastic and reminds me a little bit of Daisy. She continually puts in 110 percent and is a tireless worker.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYAuburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The fi rst classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural fi rms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based aca-demic institution, AUM is organized into fi ve schools: Busi-ness, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffi rmed by the Southern Association.
MISSION STATEMENTAuburn University at Montgomery’s mission, as the metro-politan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution,
is to foster and exemplify excellence in education through instruction, research, and service. Auburn University at Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contemporary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state, and region. AUM provides academic programs that are characteristic of the fi nest traditions of scholarship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of govern-ment, regional economic growth, and cultural enrichment through the arts.
WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY?Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your
college education. This year alone, Auburn University at Montgomery offered students more than $4 million in Pell Grants and another $20 million in student loans. Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford.
A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 18:1Our classes are kept small, giving you more personal atten-tion and allowing your professors to get to know you.

One of only six such centers in the country, it has been extremely sucessful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with compa-nies like Unisys.

Our men’s tennis team is the reigning national cham-pion, while women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball have put forth standout performances in the past as well.
RECOGNIZED EXCELLENCEAuburn Montgomery is the consistent top choice of readers of the Montgomery Advertiser, who have named AUM the best local college for the last four years. Our School of Business ranks among the top 5 percent in the world and is ranked a “Best Business School” by The Princeton Review.
THE NEW WELLNESS CENTERThe 73,500-square-foot Wellness Center will be facility that will give students more options for recreation, more space for club meetings, and a place for them to hang out when they are not in class. The center will house several wellness and fi tness amenities, including: a pool, healthy snack bar, weight room, aerobics room, running track, basketball courts and a rock climbing wall. The center is funded largely through
the student activities fee. Additional funds for building and operating the center will be provided by the university, private donations, and member-ships sold to AUM employees and alumni. Construction began February 2011, and the Wellness Center is slated to open Fall 2012.

Steve Crotz is currently in his fourth year as full-time athletics director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have fl ourished, programs established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won three national championships. In addition, 121 student-athletes
have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 47 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its fi rst meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 99 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 32 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 500 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up fi nish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent fi ve years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girl’s basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and fi nished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference an-nounced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institu-tions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and wom-en’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black, a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski, a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Ogletho-rpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of com-petition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affi liation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 indi-viduals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have fi nished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institu-tional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athlet-ics programs. The NAIA has continuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst national organization to offer insti-tutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting aca-demic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach be-
yond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commit-tment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 204 school’s recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 77 points on a 100-point scale, the 23rd-best total in the country.

Since the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University at
Montgomery has been known throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness on
the fi eld and court of play. Furthermore, AUM offers some of the best facilities
in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit.
The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s
and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium
underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a re-
fi nishing of the gym fl oor, the installation of new bleachers and new chair-back
seating, bringing the upgraded capacity to 2,760.
The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the
newly built on-campus softball fi eld, on which the AUM softball team was able
to play all home games during the 2010 season. The fi eld is part of the AUM
Softball Complex, which will include a new state-of-the-art press box, conces-
sions stand and restrooms, set to be completed in December of 2011.
The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refi nished play-
ing surface for each of its 10 courts. Aside from serving as the site for all AUM
men’s and women’s home tennis matches, the AUM Tennis Complex also serves
as a host site for the annual Small College Blue & Gray Classic held by the City
of Montgomery.
The AUM Soccer Complex has undergone several updates since its construc-
tion in 1985. In the early 2000’s new Olympic-style goals were installed along
with a new scoreboard in 2006. Several landscaping renovations have taken
place at the facility as well.
The AUM Baseball Complex serves as the home fi eld for Warhawks baseball
and features stadium seating, a grandstand, press box and concessions stand
for the convenience of AUM baseball fans. A clubhouse is also on site for all
