THE SUMMIT• First ever Jamboree at the Summit, its new and permanent home• The BSA’s 4th High Adventure Base• They’ll learn from us; we’ll learn from them• Infrastructure, electricity, roadways all new• $100 million purchase & build….all earned in under 1 year…from just 4 donors• 10,000 acres = 33 times the size of Dittmer; reclaimed wilderness; canyons

BEING GREEN AT THE SUMMIT• Last Jamboree was the safest, this is the greenest • Showers = “ambient temperature”• No bottled water…bring your own containers • Recycle bins everywhere • “Troop method” with cooking • Minimize vehicle traffic…trails designed for

people• Solar energy and geothermal heating• Smaller, more accessible program and living

areas 1,000 acres versus 5,000 (+)

MONEY: THE COST• Refer to handout for schedule• $1,600/attendee• Why does it cost so much? • Bussing is deadheaded. More than $180/boy • Side trip is done on the cheap: Counting hotels it’s

$180/boy (11% of total cost)• Our cost incorporates travel meals, training

experiences (3 weekends), hats, backpacks, shirts, neckerchief slides

• National’s cost incorporates gear, insurance, food, Jamboree experience

MONEY: FUNDRAISING• Hike-a-thon (details later)• Cuba Cheese sale (holiday specific)…should be a

big seller• Popcorn sale….coordinate with home troop• Spring fundraiser• Benefit card: we need some parents to help with

this one• Campership: Must exhibit elbow grease in above

HEALTH

• Health forms filled out within 1 year of Jambo: Parts A, B, and C….new form coming soon

• Need current form for training exercises. Due tonight

BMI• Must be in good shape. 1,300 ft. incline is greatest change.

Many physical activities. Hike prior to Jamboree• Jamboree will accept anyone with BMI 31.9 and lower• Will CONSIDER someone from 32 to 39.9• BMI 18.5 to 24.9 = normal• BMI 25 to 29.9 = overweight• BMI 30 or higher = obese• Google “BMI”. Refer to calculator, enter height and weight• 2 things: One, boys can have growth spurts and, two, this is

for your health beyond Jamboree• We will track this over next 11 months

GEAR• Refer to list• Provisions: • Council hat• At least 2 Council Class B shirts• 2 Council strips (not full set)• 2 sets of troop numbers, • 2 Jamboree patches• Duffel bag• Neckerchief• Council will provide knapsack (perhaps with seat)

• Theme related to patches• Simpler design • Something that “tells a story”

TROOP SELECTION

• 72 boys divided among 2 troops• Communities & school districts will be kept

together in troops (not necessarily in patrols)• Scouts will be kept with leaders of their home

troops• If out-of-town cousins want to be with one

another on a troop, see me after meeting• The bios you provide tonight are crucial!

RECRUITING

• 8 slots per troop still open• Invitation provided to neighboring councils• Let your friends know• And let them know we will help them earn

their way!• YOU are our best recruiter• If we don’t fill the slots………

JAMBO MISC.• See Mr. Schwab to get your picture taken• Cell phones…allowed, but limited charging facilities…a

troop leader must still be initial point of contact• Media correspondence • Adult staff positions • Boys must arrive/depart with troop• ID tags for bags, boys• You should ID your clothes, gear • Swim tests taken at our lock-in (more on this later)• Spending money: souvenirs, snacks

VISITING THE JAMBOREE

• Let Scoutmaster know well in advance --- no surprise visits

• Wednesday, July 17 through Tuesday, July 23• 9:00 to 5:00; except Sunday the 21st: 1:00 to 10:00• Arrive at parking area; register; bussed to Summit• THERE WILL BE A FEE; advanced registration preferred • Will not have access to living quarters and program

areas• National finally woke up --- visitors get only a

sampling: archery, skateboarding, BMX, disabilities awareness

LETCHWORTH HIKE-A-THON• Refer to pledge form and map• 10 mile hike at Letchworth. Impressive design. Can view

map after meeting• Collect pledges for hike….neighbors, family, friends…at

discretion of donor….$5 total to $100 total• Tax deductibility? • Numerous boys earned way to Jambo with bike-a-thon in

2010• Don’t bring pledge sheet or money to hike-a-thon; send to

office; one check preferred • Registration: 9:00 to 9:30, Saturday, October 27th at Lower

Falls…permission slip due upon arrival

LETCHWORTH HIKE-A-THON• Must wear backpack…change of clothes, uniform, bed roll, water,

raingear, ground cloth…mess kits not required • Bring a tent (buddy system preferred). Leave tent at Lower Falls• Bring water bottles/canteens! • Wear hiking shoes• Saturday night campout at Lower Falls in Letchworth• Team building exercises on Saturday and Sunday• Service project late Sunday morning…our thank you to Letchworth• Pick-up time: Noon sharp, Sunday, October 28th at Lower Falls • Permission slip is due at Saturday arrival• Troops and patrols will be announced at Saturday arrival. Will hike

in patrols

HOW CAN YOU HELP WITH THE HIKE-A-THON?

• Leaders will be hiking on trail with boys. Other hikers welcome for support & encouragement

• Need 12 more adults….10 to help out at checkpoints and 2 to help Tim with food prep, clean-up. See Shawn after meeting

• Bring cell and, if possible, two-way radios• Donations for food (see handout…backside of

payment schedule)

FUTURE WEEKEND EVENTS

• Lock-in at Albion high school in February or March (Saturday overnighter)

• Spring fundraiser and/or camping experience: First weekend in June…Bike-a-thon? Canoe-a-thon? If funds are stable, this will be a campout only
