The Pediatric Trauma Program

• Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.

• Unintentional injury kills more children than all other childhood diseases combined

• Each year in the U.S., 9,000 families lose a child because of a preventable injury

• 90% of these injuries could be prevented!

2013 SLP May Board

Injuries are not inevitable; they are preventable.

Injuries Are No Accident

Child Injuries Still Leading Cause of Death for Children

• "Every 4 seconds, a child is treated for an injury in the emergency department, and every hour, a child dies as a result of an injury."

• Most common hazards to children: car crashes, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, fires, and falls

• CDC’s National Action Plan: http://www.cdc.gov/safechild/nap/overviews/index.html

PTP is More Than Just Fundraising!

• Sponsor a bicycle rodeo, child safety fair or child safety seat inspection event

• Purchase and distribute bicycle helmets, child safety seats, electric outlet covers, choke tubes, etc.

• Sponsor an “April Pool Day” event• Educate parents about common dangers found

around the home• Distribute dolls to children’s hospitals or provide

teddy bears to first responders to comfort children• What else???
