Jack & Slide Systems
Presented by Jeremy LandryDeep South Crane & Rigging
Introduction
What is a Jack and Slide:
AKA Jack and Roll
Jack object up
Insert slide mechanism under
Move to desired location
When to use the Jack and Slide Method:
Obstruction prevents object from being lifted with a crane
Object is enclosed in a structure
Moving an object under obstacles
More economical
Examples of Jack and Slide:
Moving machinery inside buildings
Sliding loads under piperacks or other obstructions
Sliding loads off railcars/trucks
Moving objects from congested areas
Every jack and slide job is different:
Hours of engineering and planning
Require creativity and ingenuity
How to get J&S equipment to worksite
Jacking
Jacking Process:
Goal = jack object to needed height to insert slide systemStair stepUse cribbingCrisscross cribbing for stability
Types of Cribbing:
Variety of different thicknessesPlywood4x4 ; 8x8 ; 12x12 Small steel plates distribute load on cribbingManageable to be carried by handHigh capacity Ekki Wood Timbers
Need a device to facilitate the jacking portionNeed a power source (hydraulic)
Enerpac Jacks have multiple styles and models to accommodate jacking needs
Toe Jacks: Get under low equipment 1 minimum ground clearance Lifting points on both the toe and top
Gantry System:
Pick objects off SPMT or foundationSet onto slide system
Sliding
Three types of Slide
Air Castors
Rollers
Slide System
When choosing what slide system to use, consider this:
Confines of the jobsiteWeight of object being movedGround conditionsDirections of travel
Air Bags / Air Castors
Air bags / Air Castors:
Used for light load inside shopsTakes only one or two people to move loadsMulti directionalFloats on thin layer of air
Limits:Light capacityLevelness: over 10Flatness: over 10Smoothness: Machined concrete floor or vinyl tile30 to 40 psiNeeds high volume of airConsult operator manual for air requirements vs. weight of load

Rollers
Rotating Caster Skates:
Low capacity Multi directionalUrethane roller = no floor damage
Hilman Rollers are typically use for heavy loads/heavy duty applications
Roller selection depends on application & job site conditions
High capacity rollers are more cumbersome to maneuver
When using rollers:
Always be sure to have a hold back system in placeUse wedges in front of roller travel direction as another safety precautionAlways make sure ground/structural steel can support loadsAlways choose the points on the load that will give the best distribution (corners)Align rollers parallelAvoid metal to metal on top of roller (wood/pad)
Skid System
Basics of a Skid System:Skid trackSkid shoeHydraulic cylinder
Teflon wear padsOvercome frictional forceSaddle pockets if needed
Jack up objectLay foundation for skid trackLay skid trackInsert skid shoes/cylindersHook up power packLower object onto skid shoesStart skidding processAlways keep a point of contact as for safety

Case Study #1
Compressor Jack & Slide
Scope of Work:Jack compressor skid up on trailerInsert channel iron and roller under loadSkid to foundation and lower
Jacking the skid up on the trailer and inserting channel iron and rollers
Used squat cans to bridge the gap between truck and support steelWedges used as safety stop for roller
Come along to facilitate the slideSpecial jacking lugs were fabricated to fit on lifting lugs of skid to use as jack pointsLower skid onto foundation
Skid lower onto foundation
Case Study #2Flue Gas Cooler Elevated Jack & Slide
Scope of work:Jack and slide Flue Gas Cooler out of an elevated structureRemove with craneInsert new one back in place
Assembled gantry systemFabricated and attached jacking lugsJack cooler to required height to insert ramp and rollers
Slide ramp under coolerPre welded channel iron and snatch block
Crane hoisted to facilitate slideUsed wedges as safety stops
Removed old coolerInserted new one
Tips
Inspect equipment before each useAlways be sure to have a hold back system in placeIf using rollers, wedges work well for stopping loadsAlways make sure ground/structural steel can support loadsSlow and Steady wins the race!Jacking lugs can be fabricated if there are no jacking pointsWant slide to be as level and smooth as possibleChannel iron/I-Beams work well with rollersIf using air castors, seal cracks in floor with tape (refrigerator tape). Also, lay vinyl over ridges for smooth transitionsLubricate skid trackCreativity and Ingenuity are key on Jack and Slide projectsWhen you think you have enough cribbing, better grab some more.
