Breed Leading Genetics...At $ensible Prices
Welcome to the 5th Annual Great Lakes Beef Connection Bull Sale. We are very blessed with the small group of breeders in our group and we all share the same values in life and in breeding cattle. Honesty and Integrity is the key to our life and business mission. We feel this is our best set of bulls top to bottom and are very impressed on how easy they feed. New this year we have Genomic Enhance EPDs on over half of the bulls, this technology has come a long way in the last year and we feel this is just another piece of the puzzle. We have some of our new sire offspring represented in this year’s offering and really like the data and what we see. We would like to thank our past customers for their support in the past sales and as always we stand behind what we sell 100%. Don’t be afraid to call, email or text if you have any questions on our cattle.
Our open house is March 7 from 11 am - 3 pm. Hope to see you March 14.
Blessings,John, Andy and Jim
Welcome to the Sale
Welcome to the 2015 edition of the Great Lakes Beef Connection production bull sale. It is a pleasure for all of us at Allied to work with these progressive operations and watch both their cus-tomer base and customer satisfaction increase year after year. It is evident as you look through this year’s catalog that the commitment to genetic improvement and profit is as high here as anywhere in the country. Calving ease, maternal efficiency and carcass traits are primary focuses with these producers because they are crucial issues for their customers as well as the rest of the beef business.
Great genetics here are a given here, but working with the Salinas, Zinzer, Miller and Harris fami-lies just might be the best part of the experience. They stand firmly behind every bull they sell and exemplify the customer first philosophy we all share in the Allied organization. This year’s sale is scheduled for Saturday, March 14 at the J/C Simmental development facility just outside of Clare, MI, and lunch will be served just prior to the 1:00 sale start. We would love to see you there sale day, but feel free to call and stop by prior to the sale to look through the bulls and get a taste of the quality offering there.
Great Lakes Beef Connection has become a mainstay for high value seedstock for the state of Michigan, but in past years bulls have also been sold into more than 15 states. The right priced bulls available here have proven to be worth the trip for those looking for front end SimAngus and Simmental genetics regardless of where you farm or ranch. Bulls like J/C Mr National 610Y and J Bar J Nightride 225Z, produced by these programs and sold in previous sales are good examples of the kind produced here and are currently making impacts in herds nationwide.
From all of us associated with the Great Lakes program we invite you be with us on the 14th. Please give us a call for any questions you may have regarding the programs or the bull offering.
Sincerely,
Marty RoppAllied Genetic Resources

A Note from Our Nutritionist...I have created the nutrition program for the bulls in the Great Lakes Beef Connection sale for the past 4 years and continue to be impressed by the quality and consistency of the cattle. The ration system is designed to target a 3.25 lb./day of lean gain up to sale day. Following the sale, the ration program is designed to harden young bulls for breeding to ensure they will not lose substantial body condition on pasture. By using this system, the Great Lakes breeders have made a sincere commitment to provide their customers with the most durable set of bulls possible. I welcome any questions regarding the nutritional program provided to the bulls in this sale.

ASA Quick Reference to EPDs, Indexes and $ValuesEXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPDS): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In us-ing EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For exam-ple, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing in what units they are expressed. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, sire A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more weaning weight than sire B. If calving ease was the trait, sire A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if sire B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect sire A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.
Listed below are the units in which ASA EPDs are expressed:ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See $ Indexes for more details.)BACK FAT (BF): Inches of carcass backfat at 475 days.BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight.CALVING EASE (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight at 475 days.DOCILITY (DOC): Percent of offspring receiving a disposition score of 1 (docile).MATERNAL CALVING EASE (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.MARBLING (MARB): Carcass marbling score at 475 days.MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of carcass ribeye at 475 days.TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See TI for more details.)WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.YIELD GRADE (YG): Carcass yield grade score at 475 days.
$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide pieces of the economic puzzle. This is where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on integrated commercial production. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.=$6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to deter-mine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
For more detailed information about EPDs and $indexes, visit: www.simmental.org
Important disclaimer: DO NOT compare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or pure-breds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first deter-mine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.

The Value of IndexesBy Wade Shafer, Ph.D., ASA Director of Performance ProgramsThough not a scientific poll, based on my interaction with breeders, there seems to have been a substantial increase in the use of our economic indexes since their introduction. I get call after call from breeders who are using them— or at least are curious about their use. There have been several breeders of late who have asked for more specific details on the con-struction of our indexes. Given the interest, I thought it may be worthwhile to delve a little deeper into what makes them tick. Since several articles pertaining to ASA’s All Purpose (API) and Terminal (TI) indexes have been published in the Register I will not take time with the basics (e.g., defining them); for those wishing for more background on our indexes I suggest visiting the library at www.simmgene.com.
Some are of the impression that we use our intuition to come up with the trait weightings used to calculate our indexes, much like a chef would put together a gourmet meal—a dash of this and a pinch of that and viola! The truth is that it is not nearly that exciting. ASA’s indexes are constructed very similarly to the way an accountant would calculate projections on how the purchase of a piece of equipment will impact a firm’s bottom line. In doing so, the accountant has to estimate how the equipment will perform, i.e., how much output will be achieved and what level of input will be required to achieve it.
This is where EPDs come in. Because they are calcu-lated by using all available information on the over six million animals in our database, EPDs provide far and away the best prediction of the output and corre-sponding input expected in a sire’s offspring. These output and input traits are those required to calculate profit—the type of information an accountant would need to make economic projections on a piece of equipment. In animal breeding lingo, these are called economically relevant traits. The traits relevant to our All Purpose Index (API) are listed below:
Economically Relevant Traits in API:1. Cowherd intake2. Salvage weight3. Female longevity4. Milk production5. Feedlot intake6. Calf survival7. Weaning growth8. Postweaning growth9. Carcass weight10. Yield grade11. Marbling
Besides the fact that it is extensive (due to API cov-ering virtually all segments of a production system), in perusing this list you probably noticed that we only publish EPDs for some of these traits. Though you have all seen our weaning growth and carcass EPDs you undoubtedly have never seen our cowherd or feedlot intake EPDs. I say that like we have them. We do! You may be wondering how that can be since we do not collect data on those traits. The answer is that we calculate EPDs for traits we don’t collect data on by using traits we do collect data on. For example, research has shown that there is a very strong genetic relationship between feedlot intake and growth; i.e., animals with genes for rapid growth very likely eat more in the feedlot—hardly a surprise. Since we col-lect loads of data on growth, we can leverage what we know about a sire’s growth genetics with the strong relationship between growth and intake to predict feedlot intake on the sire’s calves.
We also know that the size of a sire’s daughters and their milk production level provides insight about the energy they will need to maintain themselves and wean a calf, i.e., their intake requirements. Through this process of combining our knowledge of genetic relationships with the data you submit on calving ease, growth, carcass traits and stayability, we are able to predict the genetic level for each of the eleven traits used in the calculation of API. Because cowherd traits are not important in terminal sire selection, only the last seven traits are economically relevant to TI.
Predicting an animal’s genetic merit in the econom-ically relevant traits provides the biological compo-nents required to determine an animal’s impact on profit. Now we need to tie economics to the biology. This is accomplished via a computer simulation program developed by USDA research geneticist, Dr. Mike MacNeil. Dr. MacNeil’s simulator mimics beef cattle production on the computer - cows conceive, gestate, calve, lactate, calves are weaned, heifers are retained and cull heifers and steers are placed on feed and eventually harvested. You do not get dirty raising computer cows—but you can sure answer a lot of questions!
The first step in tying biology to economics with the simulator is generating a “base” herd. The base simulation calculates the profitability of the average half Simmental, half Angus herd. Simmental x Angus was chosen for the base, as Angus is the predominant cow in the commercial industry by a country mile. It stands to reason, therefore, that the bulk of Simmental bulls will be used on Angus cows. The averages of the basic biological traits of this virtual base herd can be found below:
Biological Trait Averages for Base Simulation:Weaning weight: 550 lbFeedlot gain; intake:Phase 1 (80 d): 2.51 lb/d; 26.86 lb/dPhase 2 (50 d): 2.92 lb/d; 21.9 lb/dPhase 3 (100 d): 3.81 lb/d 26.67 lb/dCow size: 1250 lbMilk production: 5283 lb/lactationPregnancy rate: 84%Dystocia heifers (direct): 20%Dystocia heifers (maternal): 20%Calf survival: 96%Harvest weight: 1277.8 lbDressing: 62.9%Carcass weight: 803.7 lbMarbling score: 5.14Yield grade: 2.8
Of course, we also need estimates of future prices and costs to make economic projections for this herd. Yes. I said future prices and costs. Because we are selecting seedstock that will produce offspring in the future, future prices and costs are what is pertinent to us. We have used multiple sources to make these predictions (e.g., CattleFax, economists, swag). If you know the definition of a swag in reference to prediction you know this is an area where we played the gourmet chef and used intuition to some degree. When it comes to predicting the future, there is inevi-tably some guesswork involved.
Fortunately, studies have shown that price and cost predictions can be off by a substantial margin and economic indexes still tend to rank animals fairly similarly. This may sound counterintuitive, but there
are solid reasons for it: 1) because each trait is only a piece of the overall profitability puzzle, if the econom-ics of a particular trait change dramatically (e.g., the choice/select spread drops to zero), its effect on the index is limited to the degree the trait impacts overall profit, 2) because prices and costs tend to move together over time the impact of an off-base prediction in one area will likely be counterbalanced by an errant prediction in another. For example, if inflation is predicted to be 3% and ends up being 6% both prices and costs are likely to be underestimated by an average of 3% with the net impact on the index being minimal. A sample of the prices and costs used in index calculation can be found below:
Prices and Costs:Salvage price: $.45/lbHay: $.0325/lbPasture: $25/ac/yrFeed; fixed costsPhase 1: $.036/lb; $.51/dPhase 2: $.039/lb; $.80/dPhase 3: $.067/lb; $.80/dCarcass prices:Base: $121/cwt< 550 lb: - $15/cwt> 950 lb: - $7/cwt> 1000 lb: - $17.50/cwtPrime: + $8.00/cwtHigh Choice: + $3.50/cwtChoice: + $1.50/cwtSelect: - $11.00/cwtStandard: - $20.00/cwtYG 1: + $4.00/cwtYG 2: + $2.00/cwtYG 3: $0.00/cwtYG 4: - $15.00/cwtYG 5: - $20.00/cwt
Once the base simulation is complete we have very valuable information—an estimate of the future profitability of the average Simmental x Angus herd. This information provides a benchmark from which we derive weightings for each economically relevant trait. This is accomplished by changing each trait one unit while holding all others steady and comparing the difference in the bottom line with the base herd. (This undertaking would be virtually impossible in the real world; however, computer cows make it a piece of cake!) Armed with EPDs on each animal for the economically relevant traits and weighting factors based on the impact these traits have on profit we calculate economic indexes—the overall economic value of an animal.
There you have it, my attempt at taking some of the mystery out of our economic indexes. In a nutshell, the process is best described as genetic accounting. Though the concept may be new to the beef industry, economic indexes have been central to the monu-mental genetic progress seen in the poultry, swine, and dairy industries over the last several decades. Given the multitude of biological and economic factors impacting profit, assimilating them all in our minds in the hope of making sound breeding decisions is akin to taking a jump shot from half court with time run-ning out to win the game—highly unlikely! The moral of the story is that if you are interested in making money for your customers, you should be using ASA’s economic selection indexes.

This 701T son added depth of body, improved structure and disposition. He obviously has been used very successfully on heifers, but is not a typical heifer bull when you evaluate his frame size and performance. Mr. National has been tested DD free and offers phenomenal end product value in addition to his spread and potential on the maternal side ranking easily in the Top 1% for Marbling EPD and Top 2% API. This sire group did not disappoint both physically and on paper.

The Nightride sons are causing quite the buzz across the country, while this group is small in this years offering they are plenty good. As an individual, NIGHTRIDE is a smaller frame size bull with tremendous muscle and rib shape. He travels very athletically on a big, sound structured hoof and literally has a stunning profile. His soft made leg structure, free flowing movement, and attractive appearance make him a big time herd bull that will see heavy use in the future. Nightride ranks in the Top 1% for API and Top 2% for TI, get in early with one of the impressive sons.

This bull has great phenotype, his sons are built heavy from the ground up with a big square foot and plenty of bone. Don’t over look this Upgrade son’s figures on paper, he ranks in the Top 3% for WW, YW and Terminal index while still ranking in the Top 10% for IMF and REA. While there are only a few of these, they are worth taking a long look at, they will not disappoint.

LET OUR FULL CIRCLE ALLIED TEAM WORK FOR YOU!The power of Allied is de ned most simply as the strength of its member owners and their base of important commercial bull and female customers. As the only beef genetics company focused squarely on improving both genetics and service for the commercial beef business we set our sights high planning and executing services that bene t the entire beef chain. Only when each individual in a system focuses on the success of their customers can the potential for that chain and its participants to share success be maximized. The owners of Allied provide value to their customers and their customer’s customers everyday through sustained e orts to produce constantly improved and pro table genetics. Allied’s charge is to assist with service options that add value to the improved genetics o ered by its committed ownership. Shouldn’t the highest reputation commercial beef producers who commit to using the most pro table genetics be rewarded for their e orts? We believe the obvious answer to that is yes!
By building industry partnerships, leveraging the size and scope of a reputation seedstock producing system and by taking advantage of great relationships, Allied is driving forward with value enhancing services for the future. Whether you have interest in our feeder calf and replacement female marketing solutions, the services available through the strategic partners of Allied, genet-ics consulting for a pro table future or our sale day professional seedstock purchasing options, give any of us on the Allied team a call or check us out at www.alliedgeneticresources.com. Today’s wonderful pro ts will most certainly drive this industry through its greatest period of change in history. Let the professionals at Allied Genetic Resources and its network of reputation breeders help prepare you to be successful long into the future.

United is a bull that has taken the SimAngus world by storm. He has proven to be an absolute power bull that sires top end phenotype that makes him unique among SimAngus sires. Tremendous performance, volume and muscle have already driven his progeny to the top of many bull and female sales. He has both SAV Final Answer and SAV Bismarck as grandparents. It is difficult to find two higher reputation maternal bulls on the Angus side of a SimAngus pedigree. Hook’s Pacesetter and TNT Hemi bring proven maternal reputation on the Sim-mental side as well.

MCC Daylite just might be a do it all Angus sire! It doesn’t matter which database you find him in, he is hard to match for across the board genetic excel-lence. He was chosen for his potential as a calving ease specialist with great end product data and is delivering both. Just as an added bonus, he is physical-ly correct, striking on the profile and has above average muscling and base width. Not your average heifer bull that’s for sure.

This Hooks Shear Force son is gaining popularity quickly. The oldest daughters sired by ALUMNI went into production last spring and they look just like his great South Dakota State University dam. They are smaller frame, big middle, attractive fronted females with picture perfect udder and teats. Considering all EPD’s and $ Index’s, he moderated frame size, added muscle, enormous middle, extreme maternal and carcass value along with the “look” he stamps, ALUMNI may very well be the most complete and balanced economic trait SimAngus sire in the industry today.
