A message from the Chief Minister, Northern Territory Government
SEAAOC 2015 Distinguished Speakers
Welcome to the Northern Territory and the 21st South East Asia Australia Offshore and Onshore Conference (SEAAOC).
The Northern Territory is emerging as the focus of Australia’s new oil and gas projects.
The US$34 billion Ichthys gas project is due to begin processing gas late next year. When it reaches full production, the combined capacity of Ichthys and Darwin LNG will supply over 10% of all Japan’s LNG requirements and we have the land available to triple that in the future.
There has also been an unprecedented boom in onshore petroleum exploration with onshore prospectors investing almost $135 million in the Territory last financial year.
Industry estimates of shale gas in the Territory total more than 200 trillion cubic feet, with vast areas of prospective shale remaining largely unexplored.
The latest exploration results and geoscience data from our CORE ( Creating Opportunities in Resource Exploration ) program are uncovering the scale of unconventional petroleum opportunities across the Territory, particularly in the greater McArthur Basin. This vast prospective basin covers 550,000 square kilometres or almost 40% of the Northern Territory.
The scale of the shale gas potential of the greater McArthur basin, which includes the Beetaloo Sub-basin, is only now being recognised.
We’re also working with business to build a new gas pipeline.
We already have a gas pipeline running through the middle of the Northern Territory from Darwin to Alice Springs and we plan to extend that gas network into the Eastern States to meet a shortfall in supplies forecast for 2018.
The proponents shortlisted for the project are considering several routes including Tennant Creek to Mount Isa and Alice Springs to Moomba.
This pipeline will establish a long-term framework that encourages more gas exploration, creates a competitive energy market and provides access to plentiful, cheaper gas for use by industry and domestic customers.
It will also make it possible to unlock the Territory’s vast offshore and onshore gas reserves and create jobs and business opportunities throughout the Territory.
SEAAOC is the premier industry event on Northern Australia’s oil and gas calendar and there are many exciting opportunities to discuss.
This year the event runs alongside the Mining the Territory Conference and the 2nd Building the Territory Conference as part of NT Resources Week.
It is a unique opportunity for industry leaders to gather from around the world to compare notes and consider new business.
Please enjoy everything the Territory has to offer and I look forward to meeting you during the week.
