GeneralHospitaltookspringcleaningtoanewlevelonApril29.Eachdepartmenttookanafternoontocleanareasfilledwithequipment,supplies,orothersimilaritemsthatweren’tbeingused.
Administrationpresentedaprizetothedepartmentthatidentifiedandremovedthemostclutter.Enoughclutterwasremovedtocompletelyfillamoving-sizedtruck.Administrationanddepartmentmanagerscommittedtomakingthisanannualevent.
Clear up clutter day
Itwas12yearsinthemaking,butthenewCAMCCancerCenterisfinallyopen.Afteryearsofplanning,fundraisingandconstruction,thenew$50millionfacilityopenedearlierthismonth.BoththeCancerCenterandBreastCenterarenowseeingpatientsattheirnewlocations.
GrandopeningeventswereheldFriday,April17,andSaturday,April18,forCAMCemployees,campaigndonorsandmembersofthecommunity.Duringtheevents,guestswereinvitedtotourthenewthree-story,110,000-square-footfacility.
Thenewcancercenterfeatures22examrooms,32infusionchairs,fourprivateinfusionrooms,agardenterrace,retailandoncologypharmacy,boutiqueandwigshop,café,healing
garden,patientresourcecenterandfree,on-siteparking.
ThethirdfloorishometotheBreastCenter,whichmovedfromitsformerlocationatCAMCWomenandChildren’sHospital.
About200CAMCemployeesattendedaceremonyonFridayafternoondedicatingthecenter’shealinggardentomembersoftheCAMCfamilywhogenerouslygavemorethan$650,000tohelpbuildthefacility.Laterthatevening,morethan500guestsgatheredtohonordonorswhocontributedtothePowerofManycampaign–theinitiativethatraisedmorethan$15milliontothecause.OnSaturday,nearly1,000membersofthecommunityattendedtheopenhouse,whichincludedaballoonrelease,caricaturistandgiveaways.
Grand Opening draws big crowds
AshleyWittworksintheemergencyroomatCAMCTeaysValleyHospital.
Shewasaskedtoperformaroutineprocedurewithapatient,butlookedpastthissimpletasktocareforthepatient’sbasicpersonalneeds.
Wittwascollectingaurinesamplefromapatientwhenshenoticedthedeplorableconditionofthepatient’sundergarments.
Wittevaluatedthepatientcloser,sawdirtyclothesandfoundoutshehadnorunningwaterorelectricityathome.
SoWittspentaboutanhourwashingthepatient.
Shealsofoundcleanclothesforthepatient.
Displayingtrueempathy,patienceandcompassionwiththispatient,Witt’scaringattitudemeantmoretothispatientthanaroutinetest.
Thisquarter’shumanitarianawardispresentedtoDinaMohler,associategeneralcounsel.
Theco-workerswhonominatedMohlernotedthatsheispassionateaboutmanythings,andhelpingothersisatthetopofthelist.
AcoupleyearsagoMohlerscaledbacktoafour-dayworkweekatCAMC.ShehasusedtheextratimetovolunteerasaCourt-AppointedSpecialAdvocateforchildreninthe“CASA”program,andtomanagethefinancialandlegalaffairsofanelderlyandinfirmuncleandaseverelydisabledcousininaruralcounty.
Hersecretary,DeenaRaeTincher,saiditbest:“SometimesIwonderhowshedoesit.She’sa‘Jill-Of-All-Trades.’Steppinguptotheplateandtakingchargecanmakesomepeopleweakintheknees,butshedoesitwithconfidenceandease.Youwillnotseeherflinch.AbraverwomanIdonotknow.Whenshetakesonaproject,sheseesitthroughuntiltheend.SheisachampionforchildrenandvolunteershertimeandenergytotheCASAandRead-Aloudprograms.Whatawonderfulthingitistoknowthatchildreninneedhavethebenefitofherknowledgeandcare.Shegoestheextradistanceforthemandgivesofherheart.Inhertheyhaveaheroandarolemodeltolookupto.Notonlydoesshegiveofherselftotheyoung,shealsovolunteersfortheMeals-On-Wheelsprogramforshut-inelderlyfolks.Asforherfriendsandfamily,whenshe’sinyourcorner,there’snoneedtowatchyourback,itiscoveredcompletely.WhileyoumaythinkIpaintaprettypicture,itismerelyaportraitofasmartwomanwithdeterminationandcourage.Shefightsagoodfightandisfairandhonorable.”
JoeyGriffith,asecurityofficeratGeneralHospital,wasrecognizedforgoingbeyondhisroleasasecurityofficer.Onnumerousoccasions,hehasjump-startedcarsandchangedtiresforpatients.
Thereisalwaysasmileonhisfaceandakind,gentlevoicegivingdirections,talkingwithpatientsandtheirfamilies,andescortingpatients,theirfamiliesandemployeestodestinationsinthehospitalaswellasparkingareas.
Griffithoftentalkswithpatientsandlaughswiththemjusttogettheirmindoffthesometimesstressfulsituationstheyarefacing.
ThepersonwhonominatedGriffithsaidhesometimestakesicewaterandsnackstopatientsandhaspersonallyboughtsnacksforchildrenwhohavehadtowaitalongtimeinthewaitingarea.

Ayounggirlwasrecentlyadmittedtothehospitalfollowingawreck.
Shehadtohaveherbackstabilized,sothestaffintheunitwasnotabletoturnhertocleanherhairwhileinthebed.
Herhairwasmattedwithblood,glass,dirtandotherdebris.
Atonepoint,whilethepatientwasintheOR,theseemployeeswashedherhairandevenbraidedit.
Theyreallyshowedcompassionandrespectforthepatientbydoingsomethingthatisreallyimportanttoayounggirl.
Whenyouwalkintothehospital,thefirstthingyouprobablydowithouteventhinkingislookforasigntotellyouwhereyouneedtogo.CAMChasadedicatedwayfindingspecialistwhocreatesandmaintainssignsforthehospital.
SarahPyrtleisbusyoverseeingeverythingfromthesignsdirectingvisitorsandpatientstothecafeteria,tothelistingsintheelevatorstothenumbersoneachpatientroom.
Eachtimeanewfacilityopensoranofficemoves,Pyrtleisoneofthefirsttoknowandbeginsworkingonvarioussignstheofficewillneed,includinghoursofoperation,labelingofexamroomsanddoctor/staffoffices,restroomsigns,nosmokingsigns,exits,entrances—andthelistgoesonandon.
OnCAMC’swebsite,thereisamaptoeachunitofallfourhospitalsthatpatientsandvisitorscanprinttofindtheirwayaround.
“Findingyourwayaroundahospitalcanbeconfusing,andtypicallywhenpeoplearecomingtooneofour
facilitiesthey’realreadyunderalotofstress,”Pyrtlesaid.“Soit’sourgoaltomakeitaseasyforthemaspossibletogetwheretheyneedtogo.”
Creatingsignageinvolvesmuchmorethanjustputtinglettersonapieceofplastic.Therearemanyguidelinestoadhereto,liketheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct,whichrequiressignstobeplacedatacertainheightandtohaveBrailleletteringinadditiontoregulartext.
Colorsarealsoimportantindistinguishingsignage.Somecolorssignifycertainthings—redisusedfor“emergency”or“stop.”Yellowisoftenusedfor“yield”andfortemporarysignagerelatedtoconstructionorifthereareimportantshort-termnotices.
Atleast25to30signsarehand-madeforeachnewhospitalunit.Pyrtlecreated130signsforthenewemergencyroomthatopenedlastfallatCAMCMemorialHospital.
Shecarefullyplacesvinylletteringonavarietyofhardplasticsigns.Thelettersareprintedonaplotter,whichisaprintingmachineconnectedtoacomputertoproducethelettering.
Pyrtlecollaborateswithavarietyofvendorstoproducesignsontheoutsideofthehospitalsanddirectionalsignsintheparkingareas.
ForaprojectaslargeasthenewCAMCCancerCenter,thesignagecannotbehandledsolelybyoneperson,soPyrtleworkedcloselywithavendortocoordinateallsignageneedstoensurethatpatientscannavigatethenewcenterwithease.
