As the 2016 President of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce,

I want to welcome you to our great neighborhood. This year, the Chamber of Commerce is very proud to be celebrating a significant milestone, our 70th anniversary of service and leadership in the Northcenter neighborhood.

Northcenter has been home to my family and business for four generations. Growing up here, I have fond memories of going to school at St. Ben’s, family dinners at Orange Garden, bowling with my friends at Timber Lanes and buying appliances at Cole’s on Lincoln, businesses that still anchor our neighborhood today.

In that time, I have watched the neighborhood and its business community grow bigger and stronger, and the Chamber has reflected that growth by adding more enriching programming, increasing and diversifying its membership, turning Ribfest Chicago into a nationally-recognized destination event and reinvesting back into our local schools and nonprofit organizations.

As we celebrate our past success, we also look to the future for our great neighborhood. Northcenter is currently welcoming an influx of creative chefs, brewers, shop owners and specialists contributing to a unique neighborhood identity alongside established local institutions. Our businesses, old and new, contribute to a strong local economy, one that we will continue working to grow and strengthen.

I hope you will use this guide as a resource to explore Northcenter and choose to patronize local, independent businesses. When you shop local, you support the community and its continued prosperity.

I welcome you to Chicago’s 47th Ward featuring the vibrant Northcenter community, one of the most desirable places to live, work, play and do business in Chicago. Known for excellent schools, beautiful homes and gardens, walkable neighborhoods with nearby parks and playlots, and a renovated METRA and CTA public transit system, the area continues to improve with new school additions, renovated utility

mains, completed streetscapes, proposed and built developments, and new businesses in tune with the needs and wants of this in-touch community.

Our local business scene boosts popular ethnic restaurants and themed taverns, clothing and gift shops, home supply stores and supermarkets, new art galleries and established live theaters, all within reach by a pleasant stroll. The Chamber hosts several events throughout the year that promote our local businesses and creates a strong sense of community, including our annual RestauranTour.

Great Neighborhood Checklist Food & Drink: Whether you enjoy Michelin Guide-acclaimed

gastronomic delights, hidden neighborhood dives or authentic regional cuisines from around the globe, Northcenter has mouthwatering dining options for all tastes. If you are looking for a drink afterwards, you can find everything from exquisite craft cocktails to $1 cans at one of more than 30 neighborhood bars and taverns. And with Half Acre Beer Company, Begyle, Spiteful and the incoming Dovetail Brewery, Northcenter is quickly becoming the beating heart of Chicago’s explosive craft beer movement.

Shopping: Independent businesses and mom ‘n’ pop shops are the backbone of any community, and Northcenter has some of Chicago’s best hidden gems. From games and comic books to handmade jewelry and accessories; from craft brews to crafting supplies, your new favorite store is around the corner, so go ahead and treat yourself. For more on all of the local shopping in the neighborhood, including hot tips from local celebrities, look for the featurettes throughout the guide and check out the retail section of the guide to plan your next day out in Northcenter!

Entertainment: Second City isn’t the only destination in Chicago for improv comedy. Enjoy Chicago’s most beloved art form at Cornservatory, Bughouse Theater and the all-new Laugh Out Loud theater. Music lovers will fall for Martyrs’, one of Chicago’s top spots for great local and national musical acts. Take in a world of tunes at other eclectic venues around the neighborhood, or give the dance floor a spin at ARTango Center or Dance Center Chicago. Check out some of the most acclaimed shows in Chicago right here at American Theater Company and Windy City Playhouse, or visit any number of local pubs for storytelling nights and a look into Chicago’s burgeoning “live lit” scene. Or, gather up some friends and visit one of the neighborhood’s two bowling alleys. Northcenter has something for everyone.

Travel: A variety of transit options conveniently connect Northcenter to the whole city. Three CTA Brown Line stations, nearby Ravenswood Metra station and key bus routes along Irving Park, Damen, Ashland and Western make Northcenter a hub for North Side travel. The return of the #11 Lincoln Avenue bus in 2016 means another great transit asset to connect Northcenter to surrounding neighborhoods and downtown. For more active commuters, Northcenter is one of the city’s most bike-friendly neighborhoods, with designated bike lanes on Damen Avenue, shared lanes on Lincoln and a bike-sharing station in Northcenter Town Square.

Real Estate: In recent years, Chicago Magazine, WGN and real estate leaders like Redfin and Movoto have all named Northcenter one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago to live and buy real estate, citing the neighborhood’s ideal location, community and great education options. Northcenter single-family and condominium home sales have been steadily rising, and the neighborhood remains one of Chicago’s most stable and sought-after real estate markets.

Education: Bell Elementary and Coonley Elementary are two of the finest schools in the Chicago Public School system. Ravenswood School, a fine arts-focused neighborhood magnet, is a hidden gem with a strong sense of community. A robust private school selection rounds out your great education options, and the influx of new families has brought a number of new high-quality early childhood care centers to Northcenter.

Community: From families who have been in the neighborhood for decades to a new influx of young professionals, Northcenter combines big-city life with a neighborly attitude. Community events such as Ravenswood ArtWalk and the Chamber’s own Ribfest Chicago and Summer Concert Series bring people from all walks of life together. You will also find plenty of organizations and service providers improving quality of life for veterans, senior citizens and people with disabilities, as well as religious communities for many faiths.

ABOUT THE NORTHCENTER CHAMBER OF COMMERCEThe Northcenter Chamber of Commerce is a business and community development organization committed to fostering a vibrant neighborhood and local business district. Since 1946, the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce has promoted the interests and

wellbeing of the Northcenter community.

Over the past 70 years, as the Northcenter neighborhood has evolved into a renowned destination for everything from top-notch schools to craft breweries, the Northcenter Chamber has grown from a small merchants’ association to a thriving and diverse membership of almost 400 businesses and organizations with a robust calendar of programming for businesses and the community. Membership is open to any individual, business or organization located, doing business in, or intending to do business in Northcenter.

Special Service Area #38

Special Service Area #38 was created in 2006 to provide enhanced cleaning, landscaping, snow removal and other services on Northcenter’s primary streets and to help promote Northcenter as a vibrant community for residents and business owners. The SSA provides a locally controlled way for the community to implement enhancements in the way neighborhood stakeholders envision them, and ensures that local tax dollars are reinvested in the community, going to services that directly benefit the neighborhood and business districts.

SSA #38 is a “clean and green” SSA, focusing on core supplemental services to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the Northcenter neighborhood’s key streets, therefore beautifying the community and contributing to the value of local businesses and homes. Over the past year, SSA #38 provided Northcenter with sidewalk snow removal, litter pickup and sidewalk maintenance, weed removal and planting and maintenance of the sidewalk planters, hanging baskets and pedestal beds around the neighborhood, as well as maintenance of the Irving Park Road streetscape between Ravenswood Avenue and the Chicago River.

SSA #38 is expecting great things in the years to come, including focusing more efforts on developing our neighborhood public spaces such as Northcenter Town Square and the continued growth of the Retail Northcenter initiative, which connects prospective business owners to vacant properties in the area.

Giving Back to the CommunityInvestment in our neighborhood has been one of the guiding principles of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce. In addition to community events and programs that support economic and community development in Northcenter, the Chamber also takes a more direct approach to giving back. Since 2008, the Chamber has given more than $225,000 to local schools and nonprofits through our philanthropy programs.

This past year, through the Chamber’s annual philanthropy program, we were able to support facility improvements at Concordia Place, Perceptual Motion, Inc.’s free community dance programming and Common Pantry’s work ending the cycle of poverty, as well as programs promoting financial literacy and safety for senior citizens, art programs for teens and more.

The Chamber’s largest event, Ribfest Chicago, began as a fundraiser to support our work. As the festival grew, the Chamber and Big Buzz Idea Group saw an opportunity to give back to the community more directly, and the Ribfest Volunteer Grant Program was born.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Ribfest and help ensure the festival runs smoothly. The Volunteer Grant Program is a win/win for the Chamber and the program’s beneficiaries. Each group that volunteers 30 or more people for one or more time slots over the course of the event is awarded a cash grant. Some groups have even turned this into a friendly competition to see who can wrangle the most volunteers!

The program is growing every year, not only in the number of volunteers, but participating organizations. In 2015, through this innovative program, Ribfest Chicago awarded $17,000 in Volunteer Grants to schools and community organizations that support education, engage youth, fight hunger and provide essential services. We hope to make an even greater impact in the years to come.

A LOOK BACK—AND FORWARD—AT NORTHCENTER’S LONGEST-RUNNING BUSINESSES Northcenter has changed a lot since the Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1946, and so have many of its local businesses. But a handful have remained neighborhood institutions for 70 years—or more!—adapting to changing times and populations, but always providing valuable services to the community. Here are just some of the local businesses and service providers who are celebrating 70 or more years in 2016. Look for the 70th Anniversary logo next to the name of our oldest businesses throughout the directory listings.

Cole’s Appliance & Furniture Co.The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce isn’t the only local institution celebrating a 70th birthday—Cole’s Appliance & Furniture Co. first opened their space on Lincoln Avenue in 1946. Three generations of the Krasney family have operated this mom-and-pop corner shop, watching the neighborhood evolve from its blue-collar, German roots to a destination for young families. Kevin Krasney says the business has adapted to the changing neighborhood by offering new features, like the retail-oriented “Loft at Cole’s” showroom space.

Cork Lounge This cozy local tavern first opened on Addison Street on the far south end of Northcenter in 1936 and has been owned by the Ristov family since the 1980s. Brown Line construction prompted a renovation in 2008, but the welcoming neighborhood-bar feel hasn’t changed a bit. In addition to the ever-expanding beer selection, regulars and visiting Cub fans alike can enjoy board games, Pac-Man and good company.

The Davis TheaterThe legendary Davis Theater opened a century ago as a vaudeville house, was rescued from demolition with the help of local efforts 14 years ago and is now ready for its next close-up following an extensive

in-progress renovation. Owner Tom Fencl hopes to maintain the feel of “a historic movie palace, not a multiplex” and maintain iconic character elements, such as the original vaudeville stage and organ pipes in the grand auditorium. “Theaters are a community meeting place and the economic driver of any area,” he says. “They’re a great point for discovering a neighborhood.”

Neighborhood Boys & Girls ClubOn October 19th, 1931, a football game between The Galloping Ghosts and the Trojans launched a legacy of service. In the 85 years (and beyond!) since, the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club has been dedicated to building “better men & women,” moving from founder Richard Valentin’s garage to its current center of operations in Revere Park, where the Club offers year-round programming including intramural sports, after-school programs, a Computer Lab and much more. This year, NBGC will provide summer camps and activities for more than 400 children from Northcenter and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Orange GardenGreeting the neighborhood with its its neon sign and its promise of Chop Suey, Orange Garden has been serving from its location at 1942 W. Irving Park Road since 1932. The classics that put this local icon on the map—chop suey, chow mein and fried rice—still make up a bulk of the menu, although owner Benn Ruan says the restaurant has added more vegetarian items and spicy dishes to accommodate changing tastes. The restaurant’s loyal following spans generations, and Ruan says he has even freighted his egg rolls and crab Rangoon to New York and St. Louis for hungry and homesick former regulars!

How long have you lived in Northcenter?I have lived in Northcenter a little over 16 years.

What first brought you to the neighborhood?I was looking for a neighborhood with established families, younger people, people new to the U.S. A nice melting pot. I was looking for a neighborhood with the feeling that you could sit on your front stairs and share stories and news. I liked it up here a lot. The houses were beautiful.

What does a perfect weekend day in the neighborhood look like for you? Where do you go? What do you do?I would say that I get up in the morning and I go to the Julius Meinl. Then I might have to go shopping. I shop at the Jewel, the hardware store—Saturday is a chore day for me. I like to go to Stauber’s, they seem to always have what I need. How many hardware stores have been there for more than 100 years?

I would go and have lunch or brunch at Danny’s Egghead Diner. Might stop at embellish Boutique if I need to get any little gifts for anybody. I’ve been known to stand in line and go to Half Acre Beer Company and pick up an adult beverage if I’m going to a party.

A great way to top it off would be dinner at ARTango or a Saturday or Sunday at the Davis Theater. Can’t wait for the grand reopening. That is a huge jewel of the neighborhood.

What are some of your favorite places to shop?I love embellish Boutique for gifts, and Hazel on Montrose— I don’t think a lot of people realize how much they have. And there’s one store that has saved my butt many times, and that’s CPR, the Cell Phone Repair place. My son dropped his cell phone in water and they were able to save it.

I’ve always been a proponent of mom and pop stores. I’ve always been a proponent of shopping local. It’s so important and it really makes a neighborhood unique. I’d love to see more small businesses pop up in the 47th Ward.

Any other favorite neighborhood hidden gems? A big hidden gem is where I go to get my hair cut. K&E Salon. I would put those people up against any salon on Michigan Avenue.

I also love Marmalade, that’s another great place. They just have awesome food. And Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro— I love the feeling of it, the comfort food.

What is your favorite part about living in Northcenter? This neighborhood has been changing but I don’t think it’s been changing for the bad. Some neighborhoods will grow so fast that they’ll lose their identity and charm, and I don’t think that’s happening here. It’s growing but not at the expense of what makes it unique and desirable to live here.

How long have you lived in Northcenter?Since we first bought our house, in 1993.

What first brought you to the neighborhood?It's so central to everything, with regard to transportation, and the houses were all a good value. I remember many friends from "further east" thinking we had moved to Siberia—then they followed us when they wanted to own.

When my wife and I were looking at houses one Sunday morning, I got fed up with some one-way streets and just went the wrong way for 200 feet. Sure enough, a cop saw me and pulled me over. "Do you know what you're doing?" she asked. My wife waved our listing papers and said, "We're looking at houses!" The cop took the list, saw all the locations, checked off the pluses and minuses of each house, and told us we'd be dumb to buy anything that wasn't in Northcenter. So we did.

What are some of your favorite places to shop?We like the antique and resale shops on Lincoln and on Roscoe. Trader Joe's is a favorite, and I like to shop for new libations at Bottles & Cans.

What does a perfect weekend day in the neighborhood look like for you? Where do you go? What do you do?We might grab a coffee and pastry at Julius Meinl, then go for a quick hike along the river. In summer, we'll watch the rowers coming out of the boathouse at Clark Park. Browsing around places like Roscoe Books or Ravenswood Books is always fun. Then we would end up at the Bad Apple for dinner. If we have the energy, we'll call friends and go for a cocktail at Tiny Lounge.

What's your favorite neighborhood hidden gem? The Hi-Hat Club on Irving Park (which took over the old Katerina's space) has good entertainment and Louisiana food every night of the week. I don't think it will stay hidden for long. I also love to attend the "live lit" shows like "Louder Than a Mom" at Martyrs' and "This Much is True" at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro.

What is your favorite part about living in Northcenter? It's cozy, convenient and entertaining—the perfect ratio of housing to commercial.

She is affil iated with Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital,

Advocate Ill inois Masonic Hospital and Rush University.

We provide health maintenance, school physicals, sports physicals and well check-ups.

We manage chronic and acute problems such as asthma, allergy, acne, constipation and reflux.

Same day sick visit appointments are always available.
