2017 Annual Report
Rochester Hills Public Library500 Olde Towne Road, Rochester, MI 48307

• The Local History Room was converted into a Makerspace. The makerspace includes two 3-D printers, a shiloette cameo cutter, a 3-D scanner, a VHS to DVD converter, and is fully equipped with the Adobe Creative Suite. Currently, the room does not offer open hours but we do offer many programs on how to use the equipment.
• Board Games and Adventure Packs were added to the Adult Collection.
• Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Kits were added to the Youth Services Collection.
• RHPL Mini Branch service expanded its collection to include youth books, thanks to a donation from the Author’s in April Board.
• The Book Peddler participated in several community events including the Hometown Christmas Parade, the Farmers Market, outdoor concert series, and RARA’s Easter Egg Hunt.
• The library participated in the Festival of the Hills for the first time in 2017. The Adult Services Department ran Capture the Flag Nerf Games, and the Book Peddler checked out books.
• The library’s newsletter and welcome brochure were both updated and redesigned.
• A new baby grand piano was purchased for the library’s Sunday concerts.
2017 Highlights
Additional Highlights for 2017
• Story Walks were added to the library’s Garden area this past summer. Story Walks give passerbys the opportunity to read a full story while they walk.
• Early Childhood Specialist, Wendy Lehman, presented on Family Place Libraries at the Michigan Associate for the Education of Young Children annual conference.
• English Language Learners librarians began offering American culture and citizenship programs.
• Abbey the Sammy became the library’s newest therapy dog.
• The Friends of Rochester Hills Public Library raised $190 thousand for the library.
• Used book sales both online and in-house grossed $152 thousand, which was an increase from the previous year.
• In addition to the youth and adult programs, the Friends spent $23,000 for additional shelving required to complete the Second Floor Used Book Sale Room.
• The 4th Annual Wine Wit & Wisdom raised $12,738, the Holiday Home Tour raised $9,835, Memberships raised $9,369; and donations were $5,254.
• Approximately 30,000 children, teens and adults attended library programs sponsored by the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library in 2017. The programs offered include lectures, author visits, musical performers, story times, video gaming, crafts, and more.
• We successfully hosted a Solar Eclipse Watch Party where we gave away over 2,000 pairs of viewing glasses awarded to us by NASA, and had 844 people in attendance. Snacks were served, a band performed and a live stream of the eclipse played in the Multipurpose Room.
• A new program in partnership with Van Hoosen Farm launched this past summer. “Tale of Two Trails” took nearly 200 bike riders to four different historical sites along the Paint Creek and Clinton River Trail. At each site, a historian from the museum shared its history.
• The Parent Child Workshop is a five week playgroup where families can relax, make friends and talk one-on-one with specialists on child development. Specialists included a speech pathologist, a child development specialist, a nutritionist, and a music and movement expert. The library partnered with the Rochester Community School’s speech pathologist, two local child care centers-Heartfelt Impressions (child development specialist) and Neighborhood Childcare Center (music and movement expert), and Customized Health Solutions (nutritionist).
• Our Free Play Saturdays, a monthly playgroup for toddlers, preschoolers, and parents/caregivers continued to draw crowds. It is typically held on the 2nd Saturday of the month Fall-Spring.
• Storytimes are offered six times a year, each session is five weeks. There are approximately 150-200 kids (per session) in the winter, spring, and fall.
• Storytime Visits offer on-site visits to preschools in the community that the Big Blue Bus does not visit, including Rochester Community Schools Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 programs (about 20 visits in the Fall & Spring each).
• A Preschool Fair is held every February at RHPL to introduce parents to the child care centers and preschool programs in the community, about 20 schools are represented yearly.
• We continue to offer our Raise-A-Reader program to all residents birth-24 months that sign up. Children receive a free, developmentally appropriate board book each month, parents receive an educational handout each month

Programs
Volunteers
• The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library raised approximately $190,000 in 2017. With their support, the library was able to fund programs for children and adults, printing costs, computer equipment, aquarium maintenance, and the purchase of a new book bike.
• Circulation volunteers for the 2017 year completed 2,700 hours of volunteer time. That’s equivalent to 337 eight-hour-days.
• Volunteers clean all the AV materials, check for missing pieces, and empty the bins on the material handler machine. They help us with MeLCat orders by pulling our items from the shelves, putting labeling on the MeLCat items that are being sent to other libraries, and emptying the bins when Rides delivers our MeLCat items each day.
• Volunteers also help the Friends of the Rochester Library by bringing in large donations when patrons drop them off at the loading dock or even go out with patrons and bring them in from their cars. Several of our special services volunteers clean inside and outside of library items, put the items in alphabetical order, and discard items under the direction of a librarian.
Community Feedback
“I have loved taking my kids to read, play, build, and learn technology here. We love to take walks around the building to the butterfly garden. The best place and great programs for kids and adults.” --Jaime Dobronos
