To keep your child fully engaged in purposeful learning and warm-‐weather fun, Gillispie School offers an exci=ng Early Childhood Camp for 3-‐4 year olds and Elementary Enrichment Classes
for children in grades K-‐6.
Offerings include grade-‐level readiness, LEGO construc=on, robo=cs, art, cooking, music, swimming, theater, engineering, sports, and more!

Hours The campus opens at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 4:00 p.m. Extended care is provided at no addi=onal charge for elementary students from 8:30-‐9 a.m. and 3:30-‐4 p.m.
Morning classes run from 9 a.m. -‐ 12 p.m., and aXernoon classes run from 12:30 -‐ 3:30 p.m.
Lunch (12:00-‐12:30 p.m.) Students enrolled in either an AM or PM camp may join us for lunch from 12-‐12:30 p.m. Lunch is not provided, but parents may order lunch from Come On In! Cafe by 9:15 a.m. each morning at the front desk.
RegistraOon Summer Explorers registra=on will begin on Friday, March 16, 2018. Registra=on will be done online at www.gillispie.org/summer. Classes are filled on a first-‐come-‐first-‐served basis.

ADD ON AFTERNOON Super Swimmers! Offered All 8 Weeks for Kindergarten through Grade 6 Add on an aXernoon of swimming at the Coggan Aqua=c Center, snack, and free play from 12:30-‐3:30 p.m. The Center’s swim instructors teach group lessons, and campers will be placed in appropriate swim-‐level groups and learn skills that will improve their swimming ability. AXer the lessons, the campers will have free swim =me under the supervision of cer=fied lifeguards and Gillispie teachers. The Center is conveniently located at La Jolla High School; the students and their Gillispie teachers walk the not-‐quite-‐three blocks each way to/from swimming. Swimmers are required to bring labeled goggles, towels, and sunscreen.
The aYernoon swimming rate is $185* per week.
*Super Swimmers will be $150 for Week 3 due to the Fourth of July holiday observance.
Fee and Refund Policy Fees vary and are indicated below the class name. For registraOons received on or before Friday, March 30, 2018, a 10% discount will apply. Classes will run only if there is adequate enrollment. If the minimum class size is not met, a full refund will be given.
A refund of 100% of the tui=on for any class may be obtained for requests made prior to May 14, 2018, and a refund of 75% of the tui=on for any class may be obtained for requests made 4 weeks prior to the class start date.
Grade Level and Conduct All grade levels listed refer to the grade the student will be entering in late August 2018. Conduct expecta=ons are outlined on our website at gillispie.org/summer. Gillispie reserves the absolute right to dis-‐enroll a student at any =me for any reason.

Quick Reference Sheet
Early Childhood Camp at Gillispie is made up of 8 one-‐week sessions running from 9:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. for children ages 3-‐4.
In a nurturing environment that promotes social, emo=onal, and physical development, children will enjoy an array of ac=vi=es during camp, including games, water play, art, cooking, and drama=c play. There will be plenty of =me to explore the natural environment of our shaded outdoor classroom. Students who stay for a full day will have cozy =me and open explora=on in the aXernoons.
The summer camp program features visi=ng instructors from the RecreaOonal Music Center to conduct an exci=ng, percussion program for EC children to spark their curiosity and build their enthusiasm for music. Instruments like hand drums, shakers, rhythm s=cks, and xylophones will be used to explore the concepts of steady beat and high/low.
We will also welcome coaches from Super Soccer Stars to provide our EC campers with one hour of skills-‐based instruc=on that will focus on developing proper technique, building endurance, and encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship.
A morning snack is provided by Gillispie and will include fresh fruit, crackers, and cheese. Students are required to bring their own lunches each day. They are also welcome to take advantage of our lunch catering services from Come On In! Café. Orders and payments must be submiied no later than 9:15 a.m. for guaranteed delivery.
Students are also required to bring a labeled swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, and a change of shoes and clothing on the first day of the session. Full-‐day campers should also bring a blanket or sheet for cozy =me.

*$275 per week for half-‐day (9:00 a.m. -‐ 12:00 p.m.) | *$500 per week for full-‐day (9:00 a.m. -‐ 3:30 p.m.)
*Space is limited for full-‐day enrollment. Half-‐day is $220 and full-‐day is $400 for Week 3 due to the Fourth of July holiday observance.

Week 1: June 18 -‐ June 22 Morning Photography with Ms. Wahl Grades K-‐5, $250, Room 18 Snap into ac=on! In this photography camp, children will learn how to operate cameras and iPads to take, edit, and print interes=ng photos. We will photograph nature, objects, people, animals, and our community. Focusing on how mo=on and ligh=ng can be used in crea=ve ways, students will enhance the beauty and crea=vity of their photos. Each camper will build his/her very own porjolio keepsake.
Sports Camp with Mr. Whelan Grades 1-‐6, $250, Field Grab your tennis shoes and get in on the ac=on in this fun and exci=ng mul=-‐sport class! This camp will include soccer, flag football, lacrosse, pickle ball, basketball, street hockey, and more! Fundamentals, posi=ons, and strategies will be discussed and prac=ced, and campers will par=cipate in condi=oning drills and games. Good sportsmanship and teamwork will be emphasized.
You Can’t Stop the Beat! Performance Camp with Ms. Fillers Grades 2-‐6, $250, Music Room Learn and hone ac=ng skills and empathy as you step into characters such as Tracy, Penny, Link, and Seaweed and show the world that you can’t stop the beat. Develop confidence as you speak in front of a group, and work as a team to create a great show on the last day of class, Friday, June 22, 11:15 a.m. -‐ 12:00 p.m.
Adventures in AviaOon with Mr. Edwards Grades 2-‐6, $250, Science Bungalow Campers will examine what allows things to fly and make our own versions of various flying objects. We’ll experiment with parachutes and paper helicopters and work our way up to making our own kites. Demonstra=ons with gasses like helium, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen, which have different weights, will teach us why party balloons float, while an experiment with heat and density will explain what we see when we get out the giant solar bags, set fire to our ‘wish papers’, or launch our ‘jellyfish of the sky’!
Week 1 (cont.) OperaOon InvenOon with Mad Science Grades K-‐6, $250, Room 7 We’ll take you on a journey of discovery through the real life inven=ons of da Vinci, Edison, and the Wright brothers! You will be challenged to recreate some of the most important and exci=ng inven=ons of all =me including catapults, bridges, and light bulbs! Next, overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, =ps from famous inventors, and the most important tool of all—your mind! Finally, you will be tasked with dreaming up inven=ons of your own! While Thomas Edison said, “Inven=on is 10% inspira=on and 90% perspira=on,” this camp is 100% FUN! Take-‐home projects include a harmonica, catapult, circuit maze, message in a boile, and much more!
CreaOve Builders STEM with Club Xcite Grades K-‐3, $300, Room 8 Energy, force, and experiments, oh my! Crea=ve Builders STEM is a unique, crea=ve, and hands-‐on technical class for children of any skill level who are interested in challenges, building, performing experiments, engineering, and more. Week 2: June 25 -‐ 29 Morning Nature CraYs & Wood Art with Ms. Wahl Grades K-‐4, $250, Room 18 Celebrate the beauty of nature! Campers will be working with natural materials to make beau=ful jewelry and art. We will use mud clay to make beads and sculptures, weave with s=cks and yarn, and paint on recyclable paper made by us! We will also paint, decoupage, woodwork, and make paper mache art.
Hip-‐hop History Performance Camp with Ms. Fillers Grades 2-‐6, Music Room What do you get when you combine hip-‐hop with history-‐-‐some of the best theatre on Broadway! Learn and hone the ac=ng skills needed to step into exci=ng characters, prac=ce empathy while experiencing someone else’s perspec=ve, and work with other actors to tell or sing their stories! Build confidence speaking in front of a group and work as a team to create a great show on the last day of class, Friday, June 29th, 11:15 a.m. -‐ 12:00 p.m.
Adventures in the Wild with Mad Science Grades K-‐5, $250, Room 7 Take a walk on the wild side with Mad Science as we explore animals, birds, bugs, and beasts for an out of this world adventure! Have some creepy, crawly fun building a bug house and fill it with new friends to take home. Explore the amazing ways animals adapt in the wilderness as you hunt down their tracks and make an animal track of your own. Discover what a night-‐hun=ng owl found for dinner by dissec=ng an owl pellet. Take-‐home projects include a bug house, animal track, sundial, solar cooker, and more!

Week 1 (cont.) A9ernoon ConstrucOon Crew with Mr. Edwards in the Bungalow Gardens Grades 2-‐6, $250, Science Bungalow Measure once, cut twice! In this class, students will plan and build sturdy projects from wood. They will learn how to safely drill, cut, sand, measure, glue, clamp, and screw as they create func=onal and decora=ve construc=ons. The number of projects completed will vary by student skill level but may include a tool box, a woodpecker knocker, a bird house, and a personalized sign.
LEGOMATION with Club Xcite Grades K-‐3, $300, Room 8 Is your child crazy about LEGO® bricks? If so, this class is the perfect choice to add something new to the LEGO® experience! Over the course of the camp, students will write, film, and direct their own LEGO® movies using newly acquired stop mo=on anima=on techniques. Students will be put to the challenge to create imagina=ve LEGO® sets and projects, independently and in small groups. They'll be taught to use plot lines, set design, and edi=ng techniques to bring their crea=ons to life in short movies that they can share with friends and family aXer the comple=on of the camp.

Junior RoboOcs & Makey Makey Engineering for Kids Grades K-‐2, $250, Room 11 This is truly an inventor’s workshop loaded with fun, crea=vity, and, of course, engineering. Students build and program wild animal robots with LEGO® WeDo™ robot crea=ons. They will also create their own versions of common musical instruments such as drums, piano, and guitar using Scratch programming (developed at MIT) and Makey Makey hardware to bring music to life!

We will =e-‐dye patrio=c t-‐shirts, learn about our flag, sing patrio=c songs, have a beach picnic, and decorate our campus in honor of Independence Day!

“Thinking Eye” Studio I with Ms. Walters Grades K-‐6, $450 (Two-‐week Class), Art Room We’ll explore drawing, pain=ng, collage, sculpture, prin=ng, and mixed media using our “Thinking Eye.” Crea=ng with pencils, paint, ink, brushes, scissors, clay, pastels, and more, ar=sts will develop their ar=s=c skills and powers of self-‐expression. Inspira=on will spring from the world around us, well-‐known ar=sts, our imagina=on, and the beauty of the Village of La Jolla. If you just can’t get enough art, this is for you!

Exercise your brain and pump up your heart as we prac=ce passing, catching, and running plays on Gillispie’s field of dreams. Our young athletes will build endurance as they run through four quarters of fun. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Escape: Classroom Experience with Club Xcite Grades K-‐2, $300, Room 8 Develop problem-‐solving, flexible, and cri=cal thinking skills through this fun and interac=ve program. Each class will focus on a specific skill that will enhance students' abili=es to perform when challenged to solve puzzles and riddles to escape the classroom!
It’s Rocket Science! with Mr. Edwards Grades 1-‐6, $250, Science Bungalow Look to the sky! Campers will examine what allows things to fly and make our own versions of various flying objects. We will learn about Bernoulli’s Principle, and apply it to various designs of paper airplanes. We will look at various forms of propulsion as well. Classroom demonstra=ons of the pressure of gasses will lead into Alka-‐Seltzer rockets and larger scale boile rockets. We will also explore motorized propulsion as we hook =ny motors to various objects and observe their aiempts to fly.

Students will make miniature dwellings for imaginary creatures, rare and unique animals, one-‐of-‐a-‐kind pieces of jewelry, and more! Well-‐known sculptural ar=sts will be highlighted. Do a 360 and try something new!
Making Things in the Science Bungalow with Mr. Edwards, Grades 2-‐6, $200, Science Bungalow In this week of making, students will get to experience the exhilara=on of crea=on. With access to laser cu{ng, 3D scanning, 3D prin=ng, vacuum forming, embroidery, sewing, and all manner of hand tools, we’ll explore design, materials, fastening, movement, and presenta=on as we bring our visions to reality.

Morning Comedy Improv with Ms. Fillers Grades 1-‐6, $200, Music Room If you like to laugh and get laughs, and you want to develop confidence speaking in front of a group, this is the class for you. Play games to learn the art of comedy improv, build ac=ng skills, and focus as a team to create a live comedy show to crack up your family and friends on the last day of class, Friday, July 6, 11:15 a.m. -‐ 12:00 p.m.
BeauOful Bugs! with Mr. Edwards Grades 2-‐6, $200, Bungalow Gardens What’s all the BUZZ about? Campers will learn about bugs in a variety of ways. In the Bungalow Gardens and compos=ng bins, we will survey the range of invertebrate life in our local ecosystems and learn about their anatomy and life cycles. To engage our engineering minds and our makers’ hands, we will also create our own fruit fly traps, ‘pooter’ bug catchers, and bug hotels. To highlight the symbio=c rela=onships between certain insects and specific plants, we will also plant miniature gardens to airact buierflies.
Mad Science All-‐Stars with Mad Science Grades K-‐6, $200, Room 7 You have been selected to parOcipate on the Mad Science All-‐Star team! Learn about famous scien=sts and inventors who were all-‐stars in their fields of exper=se. Follow in their footsteps as we equip you with the science skills needed to rise to the top. Together with your teammates, you will build super structures, create a volcanic erup=on and examine rocks formed from volcanic magma. Soar high above as you build a kite and experiment with liX, aerodynamics, and air pressure. Discover the secret behind the stars and make a star chart. Take-‐home projects include a magne=c soccer game, rocket racer, star locator, kite, animal track, crystal garden, and more!

Week 4: July 9 -‐ 13 Morning Wonderful World of Characters with Ms. Stolzenbach Grades 1-‐3, $250, Room 8 Could you munch as many treats as the Very Hungry Caterpillar? Would you try green eggs and ham with the Cat in the Hat? In this fun class we’ll be exploring some of our favorite characters created by some of our most loved authors, like Mo Willems and Eric Carle. Each day we’ll read about adored storybook characters as we create art projects, cook recipes, and play games inspired by the characters’ personality traits, physical features, and storylines. A9ernoon Electronic Game Design with Engineering for Kids Grades 3-‐6, $250, Room 11 Arkansas Johnson, Ac=on Archeologist, is at it again! In Electronic Game Design: Temple Escape!, we will create our own version of a plajorm game that is set in an ancient, abandoned temple that will require all of Arkansas’s skills to make it out alive! We will use the Engineering Design Process to create a storyboard to outline the rules of play and characters for our game. Then, we will use Clickteam Fusion 2.5® to bring our storyboard to life with programming. At the end of the class, everyone takes home a working Windows compa=ble game.
