So what is Growth Mindset about?
Growth Mindset
The belief that with practice,
perseverance, and effort,
people have limitless
potential to learn and grow.
GROWTH MINDSETInstead of … Try Thinking …
I’m not good at this What am I missing?
I give up I’ll use a different strategy
This is too hard This may take some time
I made a mistake Mistakes help me to learn
I just can’t do this I am going to train my brain
I’ll never be that smart I will learn how to do this
My friend can do it I will learn from them

The “VUCA” Environment in 21CC
“To deal with the demands of a
VUCA environment, good grades
are not enough.
In fact they might not even be
relevant.”
Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister of Education
Workplan Seminar 2013 (26 Sep 2013)
Three 21st century Skills that
you need to hone in school:
1. Learning Skills
2. Literacy Skills
3. Life Skills
Why Must Employer Hire Your Child?
• The value that you bring (tangible and non-tangible) is
greater than the cost of hiring you.
• You bring in critical input to the firm (ideas, proposals,
work commitment, exemplary conduct).
• You enhance the brand name of the firm.
Is there a job for life?
Your child will have six to seven jobs on average in your life time.
In the first two years, it is normal to have three to four jobs.
More jobs are going to be contractual in nature.
Labour laws are no longer on the side of the employee.
Expects very little severance pay.
Working environment will be very different. Working from home,
more work-life balance, working with people from different
nationalities.

Is there a job for life?
Some of the jobs that your child will be applying for have not
been created yet.
Your child will be more mobile than you as parents. Getting a job
overseas or station overseas is more probable.
Moving from one job to another probably will bring value.
There will be more internship, possibly at different companies.
Talent and skill will be valued internationally
What can enhance your child’s employability?
• Soft skills
• IT skills
• Commitment and loyalty
• Innovativeness
• A critical mind-set
• Punctuality and participation
• Adherence to company culture
• Skills sets that are in line with his job
• Leadership skills

What can you as parents do?
• Assess your child’s abilities and interest.
• Partner with him to explore careers that may be suitable for him.
• Be a source of information or reference.
• Bring your child to your work.
• Model to him good work ethics such as punctuality and work commitment.
• Apply for internship at your company during school holidays
• Co-plan your child’s educational paths.
Parents as partners in your child’s career planning
Students succeed when schools
and parents work hand-in-hand
to support students in learning
self-management skills, taking
responsibility and building
resilience.
