A Self-funded Plan is any insurance plan in which the employer, not theinsurance company, assumes the financial risk for providing benefits to itsemployees.
Why do employer’s choose to self-fund a plan?1) more control over how benefits are administered2) ability to customize benefits to fit the needs of the employees3) expanded access to aggregate claims data for analytical purposes4) allows for lower administrative expenses5) during good claim years employers are able to reduce financial exposure
What does it mean to be a Self-Funded Plan?

What exactly is Critical Illness Insurance?
Critical Illness Insurance supplements your medical coverage and pays in addition to what your medical plan may cover.
It can help provide financial support when you or a loved one has a verified diagnosis of a covered critical illness so you can focus on getting well.

The financial impact of a critical illness
1In 2020, an estimated 1,806,590 new cases of cancer would be diagnosed in the United States. www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/understanding/statistics, September 25, 2020; Every year about 805,000 Americans have a heart attack. www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htm, May 9, 2019; Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. www.cdc.gov/stroke/facts.htm, September 8, 2020.

Over 3.4 million Americans are expected have a verified diagnosis of cancer or have a heart attack or have a stroke annually1
60% of employees surveyed are “worried about money”2
In a recent MetLife survey, respondents who reported that a critical illness had a devastating financial impact on their lives made these adjustments:2

Is it different than medical insurance?
Yes, Critical Illness Insurance is not a replacement for medical or disability income insurance.
It supplements your existing coverage and can help you pay for expenses that may become burdensome when you have a verified diagnosis of a covered critical illness.
Provides a lump-sum payment upon diagnosis verification
Is not reimbursement-based, so covered individuals only need to submit proof of a verified diagnosis
Allows covered individuals to use the lump-sum payment the way they see fit
