    INNOVATOR: The company built the remarkable St John the Baptist Catholic Church, at Woy Woy.

    FOUR category wins – including thecoveted title of Commercial Builder ofthe Year – made Kingston Building thestand-out performer at last night’sMBA Excellence in ConstructionAwards.

    Kingston won in the Extensions,Renovations and Refurbishmentsunder $1 million category for theUniversity of Newcastle’s AdvancedTechnology Centre; in PublicBuildings $2.5 million to $5 million forSt John the Baptist Catholic Church atWoy Woy; and again for the church atWoy Woy in the Best Use of Steelcategory.

    Judges were impressed withKingston’s success.

    Commenting on the CommercialBuilder of the Year Award, they said:‘‘It is great to be able to reward abuilder for going out of his or hercomfort zone into a project that couldbe a huge success or a huge failure.

    ‘‘Inthiscase,Kingstonhasbeenvictoriousintwocategoriesofthisyear’sexcellenceinconstructionawards.

    ‘‘The smallerproject stood outfor itssolid constructionmanagement thatdelivered an exceptional job, but thelarger one,St John theBaptist Church,would be outstandingin any companybecause itrepresents a leapinto theunknown requiring aresetting ofpriorities inconstruction management.

    co-ordination ofcontractors andconsultants –head office andsite office;all these elementsof management hadto come togetherwhile treading newground. And atless than $4.8 milliondollars – hardto believe.

    Commenting on the public buildingaward category win judges said: ‘‘‘Thebest public buildings are eye-catchinglandmarks and St John the BaptistChurch is certainly that.

    ‘‘This building is highly visible, evenbold in its appearance and scale. Theeye is drawn to it from afar. It is morethan a parish church – the communityof Woy Woy is making a statement,demanding that we look at Woy Woy ina new way.

    ‘‘There is now a new grandeur whichwill help to fashion the futurearchitectural style of the peninsula.

    ‘‘Thebuildingisbasedonasteelframewithsteelsheetunder-claddingandaveryinterestingzinctopcladdingthatisnowweatheringtoitsfinalpatina.

    ‘‘The windows have been installedas clear glass but the intention is thatas time and money permit these will bereplaced by stained glass. The interioris largely Tasmanian oak for a softambience.’’
