Just a note

• Video production is very dependent on the actual institution funding or backing the MOOC

• There may be – professional-quality videos– do-it-yourself videos

• Self-produced videos may involve financial sustainability• Self-produced videos shorten the gap between

instructor and students• These are the views of science professors, no from

communication technicians or communicators

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Videos and you

• A MOOC may be whole build up by an only professor

• Or videos may be produced by a dedicated staff, special equipment and institutional directives

• But anyway the existence of the Web (you are you and your digital circumstances) suggest that anyone should have basic video skills, like anyone has got basic public speaking skills

Index for this module

• 1. Introduction• 2. Types of video• 3. To be taken into account• 4. What other courses say about teaching

videos• 5. Tools• 6. External references• 7. Tips

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Before starting this module...

• This is not a full course on shooting video• It is rather a way to provide theoretical concepts• It is a way of providing practical tips• 4 steps:

– Planning– Shooting– Editing– Publishing/sharing

• In real life shooting and publishing bay be merged (e.g., mobile video) and planning and editing skipped.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Why video is the cornerstone of democratic publishing?

• Wide availability of bandwidth, both mobile and wired/broadband, 3G, 4G, etc.

• Smartphones are everywhere, easy to point-and-shoot. Photo and videocameras merged.

• Easiness to shoot content and edit.• Cloud storage for videopublishing and even

editing

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Think about it...

• Does video bring about added value to an open educational resource?

• Note that, as opposed to text or text/image presentations, video editing results in noticeable changes. Once published, they are difficult to change. Much better if kept short.

• Home devices do not carry manuals anymore. We learn to operate them in youtube.

• Reviews about everything in youtube.• But.. reviews on tourism and trips still text (sometimes

much better)

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Why is it good to appear in a teaching video?

• If the student sees you, the gap is closed, there is more comfortability, and the video is more attractive.

• Video watching means slower reception of ideas (but clever people need fast lanes... that’s what texts are for...)

• Videos can be annotated: open annotations (they should be open too)

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Devices towards video production

• Professional cameras• DSLR cameras for photo and video• Tablets• Smartphones• Other (GoPro)

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Video types (among others)

• Those created directly from camera clips (perhaps with linear editing)

• Powerpoint presentation, recording comments by instructor

• Powerpoint presentation with music or sound added automatically, slideshow, etc.

• Those generated by tablet or smartphone apps

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Clip types

• Expositive shots– Selfcasting (speaking in front of the camera)– Selfcasting on top of text/image presentation– Selfcasting on top of Chroma effect

• Screencasting (recording what happens in the screen, including mouse tracking, windowing, etc.)

• Short newsclip/report• Dialogue/conversation between two or more people

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Key aspects of video production

• Keep it short• Explain just one idea or two• Think about the best type of shot/video to

learn and acquire those ideas• Videos should be of HD quality!• License should be CC-BY-SA if possible.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

To take into account...

• Our equipment at C4DUdG:– DSLR HD-quality Camera– Directional microphone connected to camera– Lavalier microphone and other microphone (sound is extremely

important!)– GoPro wide-angle camera– Zenital camera to record experiments, overhead documents,

card tricks, ...– Green screen: 3 EUR/large paper sheet (might be painted, or

cloth)– Personal smartphones– Tables, high chairs, stools, etc.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Our software

• We use Mac OSX• Windows is a good alternative• But coherence should be kept... Linux has a

fair number of good video editing software

• About video file formats: they can be exported/imported through many free tools like WinFF in Linux.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Where are videoclips stored?

• Two copies stored in two different (cheap) harddrives using usb3.0.

• One copy stored in the cloud• One copy published in youtube or vimeo• If possible, keep 3 copies of everythink, in at

least two different, geographically separated places

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

What about subtitles?

• There are several tools available, but it is easiest to edit a text file and use Youbube’s capability.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Some advice

• Chroma effect may provide freshness to videos• Webcams may be also a good alternative to other

camera devices• Standing image of yours on top of a presentation is

not a very good idea• All clips in a MOOC should have the same start and

end (2-3 seconds with institutional image or brand)• If sound is not good, the image cannot

compensate for.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Mixing sources

• It is not necessary to mix sources. But one can improve the videoclip by repeating a shot from another point of view, or by using to (similar if possible) cameras. They can be merged easily in any editing program

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Teleprompter

• It may help or hinder freshness of a video.• There are free programs and websites to read

text.• One can use cards like News anchors do• A collaborator may project text in a large

scren/tv or even white wall in front of you• You should train, rehearse a little bit, to give

the impression of improvisation. Relax!

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Planning video shooting

• Use e.g. a spreasheet• Tag by type of video, who is involved, location,

difficulty, etc.• Group them• Avoid distractions, keep people at minimum

around you• Provide a clear view around you. Keep unrelated

objects at minimum.• White background or pleasant ones are welcome

Further tools

• Slideshark to share commented presentations for Apple mobile devices

• Brainshark• Knovio• Indeed... Youtube

• Animoto: use of spectacular transitions between pictures

• Videoclips for MOOCs: basic tips• How Do We Make Online Education More Than Video Lect

ures?

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Tips and clues about videos

• To generate a video resource, one must– Plan – design timeline – write script - no

technological barrier– Physical component: hardware and equipment

easily available– Nonphysical component – software: some skills in

video editing – linear (straightforward) and nonlinear

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Script and text

• Write down what one has to say• Project it in wall, screen, have it in paper, ...• Look to the camera, be natural, in a way

similar to specking in public• Think about doing it alone, with someone

else, or with a group of people.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Video capturing

• Green screen if Chroma effect is to be used• Good microphones! Silence, no external noise

- critical• Good videocamera, it may be a good

smartphone or tablet• Lightning – that depends on the camera, the

room – noncritical but important

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Video editing

• One has to keep track of all video clips shot• Make copies of video shots as soon as possible. If a

shot is useless, delete it.• Choose a video editing program (Mac OSX: Imovie).• Upload video to YouTube or Vimeo or specific

platform.• Remember about screencasting – easy to do,

spontaneous, likely to be more fresh• And finally: enjoy video production – perfection is

unreachable, video should be “good enough”.

@silviasimonr @miquelduran @c4dudg #23keysmooc

Practise session 2

• Plan a videoclip• Records a very short videoclip• Be used to talk in front of a camera• Experience green screen and Chroma effect• Don’t be shy about having videos of yourself in

YouTube. You’re a professional!
