Why are phone interviews so difficult?

• They Like You—But They’re Looking for Reasons NOT to Like You

• They Have to Narrow Down Their List

Phone Interviews Are Really Phone “Screens”

To make it past the phone screen…

• You Need to Do Everything You Can to Overcome the Specific Issues of This Phone Interview

• You Must Be Strategic

You need a plan—a smart way to approach this situation so you can be

successful.

Pick a Good Time and Place for YOU

• When You’re Most Alert

• No Distractions Or Interruptions

No Spouse / Kids / Pets

No Noise

Tip 1

All of those things will interrupt your thought process, so you won’t be as effective.

Find a Landline

• Control as Many Factors as You Can –The Quality Of Your Call Is a Big One

• Use a Cell Phone ONLY If You Have Crystal Clear Reception

• Do NOT Use the Speaker Mode!

Tip 2

“Can you hear me now?” will put a negative spin on your whole conversation.

Research the Company AND the Interviewer

• Research the Company –

Company Website

Google

L

Facebook

Other Social Sites

Tip 3

Research the Interviewer -

✓ Background

Knowledge is power!

Think about Your Goal

• Your Goal in a Phone Interview:– Get Invited to the Face-to-Face Interview

(the Next Step)

• Be Strategic!

Tip 4

Spark their interest enough to make them want to meet with you.

Make a List of Questions to Ask

• Ask About the Company / Job / Expectations:• “What are the biggest challenges for this role?”• “What are your goals and expectations for this

position in the first 3 months?”

• A GREAT Question to Ask:

• “What does your ideal candidate look like?”

• “How would you describe the ideal person for this role?”

Tip 5

Get a Blueprint for What to Say in This Interview AND the Face-to-Face!

Practice Answering “Tell me about yourself”

• You’ll Seem More Confident and Be More Effective

• Focus On Education, Experience, Skills, and Accomplishments– “I have a degree in X, I have experience in Y,

and I have achieved Z.”

Tip 6

Your answer sets the tonefor the interview.

Practice Answering “Why are you interested in this job?”

• “It’s a great fit for me because…” (give 2-3 reasons)

– It’s a perfect fit for my skill set

– I love the company

– I love your products

– It’s closer to my house

Tip 7

Tell them why you’re a good match.

Practice Answering “Why do you want to leave your job?”

• Underlying Question:– “Is there something wrong with you?”

• Take Away Any Concerns

• Focus on the Future:– “I loved working at X, but I’m ready to move on because of Y.”

Tip 8

Always keep the focus on what you’re running TO, not what you’re running FROM. Keep it positive.

Practice Responding to “How much money are you making now?”

• HR: “Can we afford you?”

• Hiring Manager: “I want to interview you in person.”

• You – It’s Too Soon to Talk $$$ - So, Deflect:– “What’s the range you have budgeted for this position?”

• “I am perfectly comfortable with that range.”

Tip 9

Then ask another question about the job and change the subject.

If You Have ANY Doubts About How You Come Across In an Interview…

• Role Play an Interview with Someone:

– Friend

– Career Coach

– Practice Interview Questions and Answers

You will perform better in the interview and get better results.

Put Your Notes Out in Front of You

✓Resume

✓Notes on the Company

✓List of Questions

✓Key Words or Phrases

Tip 10

Don’t Use Your Speaker Function

• Gives Them the Impression That This Call Is NOT Your Highest Priority

• Lowers the Sound Quality

Tip 11

Being on a speaker is distracting and annoying.

Disable All NotificationsOn Your Phone

• Turn off –

Caller ID

Call Waiting

Email Notifications

Facebook Notifications

Twitter Notifications

Tip 12

No Distractions!

Get Dressed for the Call.

• What You Wear Will Affect Your –

– Attitude

– Energy Level

– Presence

• Dress Like You’re Going to a Face-to-Face Interview

• Think Professional But Comfortable

Tip 13

Look sharp and you’ll be sharp.

Ban Your Spouse, Pets, and Kids

What’s More Important Than This Call?

• Blood

• Broken Bones

• Fire

Tip 14

Kick everyone out and lock the door behind them.

Keep Pen, Paper, and a ComputerIn Front of You

• Take Notes:

– Keep Your Facts Straight

– Write a Substantial Thank You Note

• Maybe Keep a Computer Handy… But Try Not to Type While You Talk

Tip 15

Ask Questions

• Ask Questions From Your List as You Go

• When They Say, “Do you have any questions for me?”

– Ask About the Job or the Direction of the Company

– Ask Something That Shows Your Insight into the Challenges of That Role

Tip 16

Be strategic with your questions.

Don’t Use Weak Language

Weak Language:

“I hope…”

“If it all works out…”

“Maybe…”

“I think I can…”

Tip 17

You have to sound like you believe in yourself before you can get them to believe in you.

Powerful Language:

✓“I can…”

✓“I will…”

✓“I have…”

✓“I’ve done it before and I can do it for you.”

Don’t Use Speech Fillers

• Speech Fillers:

• They Make You Appear Less Confident Than You Are

Tip 18

Train yourself to take these out of your speech.

Record yourselfand play it back to see if this is a problem for you.

Um Uh Like Well

Smile When You Talk

• Even If You Don’t Feel Like It, Smile!

• You Will Seem More –✓Confident

✓Relaxed

✓Friendly

Tip 19

Use Good Body Language

Sit Up Straight

Relax Your Shoulders

Stand Up

Tip 20

You will sound more energetic and enthusiastic.

Give Complete Answers (That Aren’t Too Long)

• Phone Interviews Are Usually a Lot Shorter Than Face-to-Face Interviews

• Answer the Question, but Keep Your Answer to Around a Minute or Two

Tip 21

Make sure you have time to answer all their questions.

Don’t Talk About Money or Other Concerns

• Never Bring Up Money

• Stay Positive

• No Negativity

Tip 22

Don’t discuss your concerns about anything.

If Distractions Happen, Deal With Them

• If Something Happens–– Let the Interviewer Know You Need to Deal with It

– Excuse Yourself

– Deal with Your Business

– Get Back to the Call

– Apologize

Tip 23

Things do happen… deal with them calmly and professionally.

Ask When You Can Come In to Talk More About the Job

• Always Ask for the Next Step

• If They’re Not Interested, It May Be Because You Haven’t Communicated Clearly Enough

• You Can Find Out and Correct Issues While You Have a Chance

Tip 24

Asking for the Next Step Boosts Your Chances of

Getting It by

30%-40%

This is the best time to overcome any concerns or red flags they have about you.

Send a Thank You Email Within 24 Hours (at Least!)

• I Tell My Candidates to Send a Thank You Note the SAME DAY

• Send a Substantial Email:

– Thank Them for Their Time

– Express Why You’re a Great Fit

– Expand On Something You Talked About

– Mention Something You Forgot

– Correct Something You Think Was A Problem

– Tell Them You’ll Be Calling To Follow Up

Tip 25

A 30/60/90 Day Plan Answers the 4 Big Questions of Every Hiring Manager

Can you do the job?2

Do you understand the job?1

Will you do the job?3

Do you pose a risk to his continued employment?4

Hiring managers need to know the answers to these questions to feel good about hiring you.

Pete’s plan answered these questions and

communicated his value. He was the same person, but now he showed who he was and

what he could do.

A 30/60/90 Day Plan Demonstrates That…1 You Understand the Job – you’ve written out this specific list of action steps

that illustrate your knowledge

2 You Can Do the Job – you have a list of goals and priorities for your first 3 months that shows you know what the job entails and what needs to be done

3 You Will Do the Job – you’ve used this plan to set your goals (any manager knows that if you write down a goal, you are much more likely to achieve it)

4 You Are Not a Risk to His/Her Employment – this plan lets them see into the future with you and know that they won’t regret hiring you

A 30/60/90 Day Plan Changes the Interview Dynamic

• Instead of Just Answering Questions, You’ll Have a Back-and-Forth, Real ConversationBetween Professionals

• Puts the Hiring Manager on Your Side Psychologically

Once they can ‘see’ it, they’re halfway to making you the offer.

Customer TestimonialI just wanted to let you know my results from using your 30 60 90 day plan. [Prior to purchasing your plan my face-to-face] interview went great! As we wrapped up [the hiring manager] said we are going to have another

interview and I want you to be able to tell me in our next meeting how you plan on tackling this job. I put together my…plan. At my next interview, when the hiring manager asked if I had given any thought as to how I would tackle the job and when I responded with "well yes I have. I have prepared a 90 day plan that I would love to share with you" the look on his face was priceless!! He was not expecting this Peggy. The interview went amazing. I was offered the job within 24 hours.-- Jeanne Roman

Customer TestimonialsThe 30-60-90 Day Action Plan outline was easy to use and really got my thinking into full gear. It also showed me ways to highlight what I'll bring to the role.

As a side result, my confidence is unshakable because I have control of the situation and not just waiting to react to a question. - Gwen

The 30/60/90 Business Plan has been an unbelievable tool. I have received many comments on my proactive approach and received 3 job offers. Many Thanks for all your suggestions.

Powerful proactive planning leads to strong results. - Jon Hoden

Customer Testimonial

I used this plan for 3 separate job opportunities, and yesterday, all on the same day, I was offered all 3 of those roles!

But that's not the end of the story. One of the employers I presented the plan to, was so impressed, I was offered a more senior position within the organization, and am now on a package almost 30k higher than the role I applied for! - Anthony Grey

That’s the power of our 30-60-90-day plan, and that’s what you deserve to have.
